    Honestly, Abuela is probably my favourite character because of just how complex she is. She's such a grey character, though she's leaning more heavily to the good spectrum. She's genuinely a good person, she really does want to help her community and we can tell underneath her surface she cares for her family. But because of her trauma and loss then being given a gift, a second chance, she is so desperate not to lose it again that she ends up hurting her family. In the end, there's no more candle. The candle was born from trauma, Abuela keeping it around just shows that she hasn't completely moved on from that trauma. Then in the end, when their magic returns but there's no more candle, Abuela was finally able to move on. The gift no longer came from a traumatic memory, it now comes from the love of the family. Abuela is so complex, so well written, she ends up being such a fascinating character to analyse. Because of that, she is definitely one of my favourite characters.

    The movie kinda speeds past it, but Bruno's actions at the river are really impressive. He openly admits to being scared of seeing his mother again, and yet when he thinks that Mirabel is in trouble? He charges up on a horse, ready to rip into Abuela and take the blame for all that happened. He's a good uncle. I also love that after so many years of "we don't talk about Bruno", everyone's overjoyed to have him home again.

    Trauma doesn't excuse what she did, but it explains it. It also helps that she however strict and though she was, it's obvious that there was love in there too. It reminds me to my grandma, it was hard for her to express her emotions and many times was overly critical, but she also made evident her love and care for us in other ways (and I also found out she would praise me to my mom). Abuela Alma didn't do what she did in purpose, or out of cruelty and taking her trauma out on them: she thought she was protecting them. She acted out of grief, protectiveness and love for her family. Understanding brings compassion, and compassion can bring forgiveness, specially when Abuela admitted her wrongdoing, apologized and changed. Family is very important in latine culture, and you don't have to forgive them (god know I've alienated a couple of uncles) but honestly? as someone who heavily identifies with Mirabel and had her grandma also change and grow.. of course I understand why they forgave her. I battled with my feelings, but I loved and forgave her, and now I miss her everyday.

She's a woman who was driven from her home by colonialism and genocide who watched the love of her life get murdered right in front of her. She was left to take care of 3 newborns AND AN ENTIRE TOWNS WORTH OF PEOPLE with no time to process the trauma she went through or grieve the loss of her husband. Her past is not an excuse for her actions, but it is a reason. She was acting and lashing out out of fear, grief, and desperation. In her mind she cannot be vulnerable again, she cannot have her home and life taken again, and she cannot lose what she thinks is protecting her family. She absolutely made mistakes and caused damage to her family, but she is not doing any of it because she wants to harm them. She is a broken person who never had time to heal, and she accidentally bled onto the people around her. But we can't discount the intense trauma she went through so easily, and she is not a character to look at through a black and white lense. Her story is a reflection of thousands of real elders processing generational trauma at the hands of colonialism. The forgiveness might have some too soon but this is a disney movie. And most importantly, Abuela ackowledges what she did wrong in the end; she starts taking steps to correct her behavior, to tell her children that she is sorry, that the Miracle is them and not their powers. It's a start, and would a truly evil person try to start righting the wrongs they had done? No

    I don't think Abuela was jealous of Mirabel, or the reason she blamed Mirabel for the home breaking. She didn't want to lose her home, the miracle, and during Mirabel's gift ceremony the door disappeared and the candle flickered, a magic candle that never went out as Abuela knew. This scared her that Mirabel could destroy her second chance, the safety of her home and family, after all she went through. She was afraid of it happening again. In her mind Mirabel was a danger to the security she had when she got the miracle.

    That's also why Abuela's so hard on Bruno after he left and they don't talk about him. She turned to him in a time of uncertainty for help and, from the family's perspective, he abandoned them instead. No one knew what the prophecy was or his concerns for how it might be interpreted. He just left them to deal with any potential repercussions. It's similar to how so many people judge Mama Imelda in Coco for not immediately forgiving Hector when she found out he'd been killed. It didn't matter that he wanted to come home, what mattered was that he left in the first place. Bruno had the best of intentions in leaving, but doing so didn't help the family either and only left them with more questions and more burdens to bear.

  • @Nomadxcvii

    @Nomadxcvii

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@notestasiskis I think for the most part the reason why he left them was because he felt that his gift wasn’t really helping his family. They constantly asked that he looked into their futures but most of them didn’t like their outcomes. When Abuela asked him to look into Mirabel’s future, he didn’t want to make an even bigger mess of things and didn’t want Mirabel to go through what he went through or even worse so he tried to fix it himself by making spackle and fixing up the cracks which hardly did much but to him it was better than facing what Was happening to Casita. Because of her trauma, Abuela had expectations from each one of the family members and eventually lost sight of what was most important and pushed the most important people away ie Maribel who’s future was to save the magic of the house and Brunito who was essentially the one to guide her towards her gift. I think with Mama Imelda it’s different to Abuela Alma’s perspective because Bruno was constantly trying to help the family whereas Hector wanted to follow his dreams and he left because he was thinking of himself at that time. Bruno however didn’t wanna leave but the pressure from Abuela and expectations of being in that family and trying to be perfect pushed him away.

  • @notestasiskis

    @notestasiskis

    @@Nomadxcvii I completely agree that's his reason for leaving. He absolutely had good intentions. I'm talking about the perspective of the rest of the family, the ones left behind. Mirabel says he disappeared one day, Abuela says he left, Julieta says he lost his way. To their knowledge, he saw something terrible and walked away in the middle of the night the day Mirabel didn't get a gift, didn't even say goodbye or tell them what the "terrible vision" was so they might prepare. The audience knows this isn't what happened because we heard Bruno's side, but the family doesn't (except Mirabel, who stands up for him). A lot of people get upset at how the family "talks" about Bruno, but they probably believed that he didn't care or love them because he left. Bringing it back to Coco, they didn't talk about Hector because he left them for selfish reasons. The Madrigals don't talk about Bruno for the same reason, they just don't know he wasn't actually being selfish.

I don’t remember them saying that he didn’t care for them or didn’t love them. You’re right he should’ve said something about Mirabel’s vision but my question is would they see that as a way to prepare for the crisis or would they have cast away Mirabel like they did Bruno to avoid her future from happening? We’ll never know how they would take it but we know that they all played a part in what happened before and after Bruno left.

    The more I watch this movie, I realize Mirabel did receive her “gift” when she was little. Her “door” dissolved into the house. The house was then linked to Mirabel. Noticed whenever Mirabel was sad the house would crack? Or when her grandma was talking poorly about Mirabel the house would crack? It’s bc the house was linked to Mirabel. Mirabel was destined to be the next keeper of the magic. When Mirabel puts her door knob in the new house, the magic within her resorts the house.

    Mirabel and Bruno had to put up with Abuela's rejections, but Isabela, Luisa, and Pepa each represented a different form of personal struggle. Isabela strived to be perfect because that's all the world saw in her, Luisa was always heavily depended on because of her super strength, and Pepa had to constantly supress her emotions to keep the weather in check until it became too much for her to bear. By the time they all get their gifts back, Isabela was finally able to embrace her true nature, Luisa learned that she doesn't have to be tough all the time and can instead kick back, and Pepa can just go with the flow no matter the weather.

  • @rinthewolf

    Yeah, for those 3, the time they spent without their gifts was probably very important to learning to how to deal with them when they came back. Isabella got to learn to be as wild as the plants she learned to garden, rather than perfect like a tended rose. Luisa got to learn how to deal with having a limit to her strength, even if she was still stronger than most due to her muscular build. It taught her to know her limits and relax when she gets close to them. And Pepa got a brief time where she could have any emotion she wanted with nothing happening, so she learned how to just let it out when it came back. I bet there was a few days where every time she got anxious, she looked up and was confused not to see a cloud.

    I have seen this movie so many times, and I still cry at Dos Orugitas/Abuela’s flashback scene every single time. How I first interpreted Mirabel not getting a gift - and I’ve seen others with similar thoughts - is that the gift started with Abuela & her love for her family & Mirabel is the next in line to hold it. When Mirabel seemingly did not get the gift, I believe the magic/Casita was choosing Mira as the next keystone or foundation for the encanto. At the time the encanto was created, the family needed Abuela’s survival approach - but having to protect the family as a whole made her blind to each family member’s individual needs. Abuela did her job, now the family can thrive, and with Mirabel’s generation they can move passed survival & begin to heal from the past trauma. Very familiar themes with a lot of immigrant & first gen families - at least for me as a first gen American. I love this movie so much, and have so many thoughts & feelings about it ❤️

    It's why some of the first lines of the last song is "We need a new foundation" and ends with Mirabel saying "me". Abuela ways was the old foundation and in some ways will aways be so but change needs to happen to preserve. The Miracle was created with sacrifice and Abuela made scarfice the centerpiece of the family. While as Mirabel makes individuals coming together in love & support the cornerstone of the family. Trauma begets truma until you can let it go. It's also illustrated that Abuela wears her mourning shawl since her husbands death but she is finally not wearing it at the end.

    I am Venezuelan, and I didn't drink coffee when I was a child, but that was probably because 1) My mother wasn't that big into coffee, and 2) While I was born in Venezuela, as well as my parents, our family is portuguese, so the culture is a kind of different. My way to see Abuela is that she was well, traumatized. She lost her home, her husband, and was running for her life without a clue if she would ever make it, let alone her new born babies. When she received the miracle, it was a way to signal that "as long as you have this, you will not lose your family away" or at the very least, I think she subconciously thought of the miracle that way. Is not that much about the house, or the magic, is the fact that before that miracle, she lost her husband and there was a very high chance they would be next (the bandits were close, after all); for her losing the miracle meant she may lose her family, her life away. Sure, there wasn't any bandits in her doorstep this time, but the miracle was just a band aid on that trauma, that she never got to fully recuperate from, if at all. Not only she became a single mother, suddenly everyone was looking at her for answers, since the miracle save them all (she got a house, but the mountains made possible for the rest of the people to be safe); so now she is just 25, and needs to be responsible for so much. She never got able to properly grief, to digest the fact that the danger was over; I imagine everytime she had doubts, or fears, she thought "as long as we have the magic, we will be fine". Not sure if I am making any sense (Is late here, and the cold medicine is affecting my brain) but my point is, she just felt if she lost the magic, she would lose her family, and after Pedro, she doesn't feel she can take another hit.

If anything is the villain it’s trauma. I’m glad you loved this movie and saw how relatable the morals & lessons are. The generational trauma & pressure really hits home for Latinos who have parents & grandparents make HUGE sacrifices for a better life. The high expectations, facing the odds, being VERY family oriented. Individuality isn’t as praised so much in Latin America in comparison to say the US.

    I think there’s a big difference to knowing that coffee is a big part of Colombian culture, and assuming non-Colombian people would know that it’s a part of the culture for kids to be drinking it lol When I lived in Thailand it was a huge shock to me how young the kids started eating the spicey foods that I, as an adult, still can’t eat 🥵. A lot of Americans I know are amazed at the fact that the legal drinking age here in the UK is 18, and it being even younger in some parts of Europe. I love that Disney films are now shining a proper light of all the different cultures around the world.

    This is an almost perfect film for me! I mean i’m not really gonna judge the animation and music from Disney because they’re always top notch but the story is just so different than their previous films. There were no villains at all, it was just family problems which of course, many people would relate to. And despite the many characters, all of them really got to shine and have their own story (except Camilo probably aka the shapeshifting kid). The resolution i would say was too quick for something that’s hurt their family for decades but i guess you couldn’t really show the process of healing in an hour 30 minute film, also considering the main target are kids. But over all, this movie is amazing, probably on Disney’s top 5 and my favorite for sure.

    I connect to Mirabel. I'm the oldest but my younger brother's are so talented. I never really found my "niche" growing up and didn't join clubs. Even when I tried things nothing seemed to click. Then my brothers come along, and they're both just so naturally talented. I tried music and while I've become okay at some (with sheet music), my brothers learned piano from a young age and even began composing their own songs, and both joined marching band in high school. The older is a math quiz and is finishing college. Meanwhile I (7 years older) am just starting going back to school and have finally found something I'm interested in. (thanks to disability support and aptitude testing). Like Mirabel seeming talented at sewing/embroidery, accordion, ect, I've picked up a few skills, usually self taught, but I know its never going to be as good as someone actually talented or gifted at those things. Part of it I sorta blame my parents, being the first kid and both having jobs they didn't have a lot of time or know how to push or encourage me. As an adult I was diagnosed with ADHD/Autism, so forgetting and lack of motivation make a lot of sense in hindsight. So when I quit (or forgot to keep going) to a club they didn't keep pushing it very much. The most was when I quit violin, I did try but just wasn't for me, they were a little upset at having bought a violin for me only to give up. First brother (A) they seemed to actually encouraged. From 3 they signed him up for soccer and then baseball, as well as piano lessons. They also signed him up for and took him to different clubs and summer camps, like a robotics summer program. When he got old enough to try and find what he wanted he tried basketball for a semester. Then he joined band and found an interest in playing saxophone. He continued taking piano classes until band took up more of his time. In high school he was in marching band and even got a saxophone solo at one point. He seemed to be good at everything he touched. Even went to college early, and now is graduating with a degree in mathematics, but is still planning to continue his degree to Masters and move onto a bigger university. Second brother (B), similar thing. Soccer, baseball, piano lessons. Clubs and Summer camps. He took tuba in high school and made it onto marching band as well. Also played drums for awhile at home and was pretty good. Ended up dropping most of the stuff, partially because of the pandemic and having to homeschool, but also just losing interest like I did. But it wasn't for lack of my parents pushing and trying to get him to keep it up, or lack of skill. (He did suffer from a bit of envy and discouragement when he was younger from A being so good. We had to keep telling him it was because A was older so had done those things longer and B will catch up and get just as good if he keeps practicing.) Though maybe not as near prodigy as A, B was still very talented when he actually put in effort.

I was born out of wedlock, product of bottles of beer because my parents were too reckless and young and my dad was my grandmother’s favorite and she blamed my mom for it so I definitely wasn’t her favorite person and I was kind of the “black sheep” even when I didn’t do anything remotely bad to be considered one. My grandfather was the only one who was there for me and the only one who nurtured me, defended me and gave me love because that didn’t even happened with my father. In my mom’s side of the family, that wasn’t a problem at all.

    Responding your question about kids drinking coffee: yes, it is very common here in south america. In Brazil at least, we all drink coffee (except those who don't like it) and kids usually drink it with milk, bread and butter before going to school. Even our word for "breakfast" is called "café da manhã" which means "morning coffee". Brazil and Colombia have very similar cultures, their neighbors after all. In this movie for exemple, when Antonio get's his powers, literally ALL the animals that appear are considered symbols of Brazil: Jaguar, Tapir, Toucan, Capybaras (i love them) and Coati. Before this movie, I never had thought they would be considered symbols of Colombia as well, but i guess it makes sense, since colombia shares a part of the Amazon Forest with Brazil. I'm just saying this as an exemple of how relatable this movie is for us, Brazilians, and i guess to other south american countries as well. Disney did a great job of representation.

    My favorite theory for Mirabel's gift is that she is, herself, the new embodiment of the miracle. After all, Abuela won't live forever (even with Mirabel's mother's amazing, healing cooking), and on top of that, the miracle, for her, came from a place of trauma and pain - not a place of strength and growth. The miracle was... in many ways tainted by the trauma of the experience they went through to get it. With Mirable as the new core of the miracle, it is able to be from a place of growth and healing. But even more than that, there are things to point toward that interpretation, largely having to do with the way Mirabel is the one who communicates most directly with Cassita, with only her grandmother being anywhere near the same level, the fact that the cracks in the house are directly tied to Mirabel's... essentially faith in herself, and that the candle burns brighter as she builds stronger and healthier bonds with the family members. That, along with Bruno's line in the final song "You're the real gift, kid, let us in," and the fact that the new front door to the rebuilt Cassita is Mirabel's door through and through, making the household, and by extension its magic, her gift.

    Really love this movie and what you said😍 especially the character of Isabella. I think they portrayed the conflict between her and Mirabel really realistically. It’s exactly like the conflict my sister and I have. She accuses me of praising myself for being perfect. I am jealous that she can get away with acting out and have no expectations set. So I can really understand Isabella being upset with Mirabel. And Mirabel is also not very nice to her until Isabelle opens up. Fortunately Mirabel realised that she judged her sister wrong. But a lot of my experiences with that was people telling me I am to sensitive, unreasonable. It is frustrating that everyone despises you for being a golden child because they aren’t able to see how stressful it is and how much you give up just to make life easier for others.My experience of trying to be perfect is putting your wishes/opinions after everyone else’s expectations for you and on top of that you get hated for it and you can never be perfect enough for them. Hope some more people can understand that through this movie. Glad you noticed.

I grown up listening that it was not good for kids, but sometimes they would allow me to drink it a little bit with a lot of milk. When you’re 16 or 17 is already normal for us to drink coffee. Is good to remember that coffee is culture in Brazil because of our coffee growing history. This culture is so strong that people always finds an excuse to drink coffee. As about the future... well... yes, that could be depressing, but the opposite situation could happen as well. A good example is given in the Steven Universe show. There was a race of living gems, a type of which was Sapphires, who could see the future. They always saw their life in front of them "like an open book" and accepted it, but it all flew out of the window if something impulsive happened (like in case of the plot-important Sapphire, who saw herself being defeated in the future, but another Gem instantly decided to save her, and as a result she lost her certainty about the future). Guess it works both ways

    I respectfully disagree with the ability to view that seeing the future would suck out the fun of life. Because I believe that the path has many countless paths that change and shift, in that case the future itself is not set in stone. The ability would entail being able to see the most likely future, even if it isn't the one that happens. Like the times we got hit by a car on the street, so it was a bit inconvenient. I feel I would be happier to feel a little bit of power with the ability to properly inform my choices with future advice, such that I don't have to deal with living with regrets. Also so I don't hurt people with my words and actions cause I'm able to properly guide my decisions to find the most suitable future.

    Your reaction is so heart warming. I luv your analogies between the movie & real life. Regarding the movie, Mirabel's ability to connect & understand people on an intimate level isn't a "gift" that the candle gave to her. It's part of her personality, her character. I think she developed that skill out of necessity while trying to get the approval of her grandmother. The candle never gave her a gift. Also I don't think jealousy ever played a role in the family dynamic. The grandmother's issues seemed to be denial, fear & arrogance. Mirabel's issues seemed to be lack of acceptance & over compensating. I understand why the family followed the grandmother's lead in blaming Mirabel for everything but what I greatly disliked is how they wouldn't come to Mirabel's defense even after they admitted their concerns smh

    Camilo is probably one of my favourite characters, his voice in the Bruno song is my favourite too. He’s just got such a good power too. And they didn’t show him a lot but I really liked how they played with his character.

    So I noticed something that I'm not sure if some may have picked up with Abuela. The symbolism of the candle's flame and it's relation to the home and family. Abuela was scared of losing her home, but in her mind her family was what made her home. The flame has been fading because she's become more distant and the family isn't as close to each other as they used to be. She was so focused on doing what she thought would make the family stronger, but never realized her behavior was what was causing the rift until the house literally fell apart. Especially after seeing her perspective on what happened to her husband, you could really see that she was just putting up a strong front all those years. I feel this so much because my mom is like this but recently has started to come to terms with how much pressure she was putting on herself. It's admirable, but if you focus too much on keeping life on track, then you miss out on actually enjoying those moments because of worrying if it's perfect or not.

    Almost every last reaction video to this movie mistook little Antonio for her little brother. But if y'all were really watching the movie closely y'all would remember when she told the little kids at the beginning that her "cousin's ceremony" was happening that day...or picked up on the fact that Antionio is her tia (aunt) Peppa's "baby".

    5:18 Agustín doesn't have a "gift" since he married into the family, but his gift is his clumsiness (which includes attracting angry bees, as you see).

    Mirabel's gift is that she is the next Keeper of the Candle. When Abuela Alma eventually passes on, her door image will likely be replaced with Mirabel's image, and Mirabel will be her successor. That's why her door disappeared when she was 5 and had her Gift Ceremony. Her door will eventually be Abuela's door, someday. Like Abeula, Mirabel is the anchor and lynchpin that holds everything together.

    I went to Guatemala on a mission trip and everyone drank coffee. When I say everyone I MEAN EVERYONE!! Even the preschool kids at the school we were helping. I asked someone why and at least for the kids, they put tons of sugar and they use it to get kids to drink milk.

    I'm Costa Rican, born to Colombian parents. Back in my childhood (I'm 36) everyone I knew drank coffee as kids. My brother and I, and most of my classmates as far as I know had café con leche with their breakfast before school. Actually, I remember not just my brother and myself but also all my little cousins as toddlers waddling around with our sippy cups full of café con leche, or our moms dipping cookies in it to give to us to suck on when we were babies.
