When my daughter was Coco's age in the flashback, she liked to reach her hands out and touch my face - so when that scene came up in the theater, that was when I started crying.

I studied music therapy in college and when I first saw this movie I got so excited at the end because Coco‘s reaction to hearing the song from her father is a well known and documented phenomenon for patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s. This is my favorite Pixar movie. I love that the message isn’t just “follow your dreams at any cost” like a lot of kids movies say. it’s that family are the people who support you in your dream and sacrificing your family makes the dream hollow.

This movie holds a very special place in my heart. My grandfather was a musician before he passed away a few years ago. Now my grandmother, his wife, is suffering from dementia. She's lost a lot, but always perks up when we play his old recordings. When it comes to Alzheimer's/dementia, they say music is the last thing to go. We're blessed his talent was passed down to us so we can keep his spirit and her memories alive.

Edited to add: did you notice that while Hector spends the whole movie barefoot, he has shoes at the end? Once he was reunited with his family, they made him shoes! As far as this movie breaking anyone who watches it... yes. Anyone who can watch Miguel play that song to Coco and not at LEAST get choked up must be some kind of monster! (I'm just kidding. I wouldn't actually judge anyone like that.) But this movie hit me especially hard because it came out just a few months after I lost my dad, who was also a musician, and passed his love of music on to me. My brother got hit even harder because he was a new father at the time. He had a little girl (now he has 2). So he got the double-whammy on feelings from it.

For anyone who has had to deal with a loved one suffering through Alzheimer's, this movie hits home REALLY hard. When Coco looked at her daughter and asked who she was, damn near broke me, the first time. A very dear friend had to watch her Mother slowly fade away from Alzheimer's, and I was there, the first time her Mother looked at her and asked that same question. The end, when Coco came back DID break me. Still does. The tragic part of this movie was that because the memories needed to be passed down from someone who knew of him in life, and the family was forbidden to even speak his name, much less any story, beyond that he left them, Coco was the only one who could save him. But by telling the whole family, at the end about him, she guaranteed him several more generation, at least.

When i watch this movie for the first time i did some research on it so when Pixar's studios went to Mexico they met the real grandmother Coco and family. which this movie is based on and then i learned Pixar's studios isn't giving any royalty checks to the family.

There will never be a time when I'm not crying when I hear Remember Me, and if I'm not its because I'm dead and even in the afterlife I'm sobbing. She not only remembered her father but her daughter as well, because we saw in the beginning she was forgetting her too.

'Coco' is short for 'Socorro', it's great-grandmother's first name, while 'Abuelita' means granny. The word you were thinking about is 'coca', that's the magical white powder. *Wink, wink*

Coco in Spanish is literally coconut. It is also used in Mexico as nickname for ladies named Socorro as in this movie. It is also used as a slang to refer to someone's head. And finally it is also used to refer to the Boogeyman that will take children in a bag if they misbehave

Lol I guessed that Ernesto De la Cruz was not the real great-great-grandfather, and Hector was, mostly because of how careful they were being not to have anyone but Miguel say the his name. It was always "that man" or "that walkaway musician," or "My husband" or something. And Hector was the only other major male dead character. Lol

Not to mention that when Miguel tells his family that Mama Coco’s father was De la Cruz his father says that they know nothing about De la Cruz and his grandmother asks him if he wants to end up forgotten. A famous musician would be on plenty of Ofendas, something that De la Cruz confirms, and not be forgotten but someone who wasn’t known to anyone but friends and family would be in danger of being forgotten if their story wasn’t passed down and their photo put up.
