As proud as I am to be an American, I sure do have a monstrous amount of envy that you have the ability to dig up relics greater than 200-300 years old. Not only that - but I enjoy immensely the history you present along with your finds! Not surprised at all that your channel is picking up speed and making you an international detectorist star. And - I love that aluminum is as much a pain in the behind for you as it is for me. Clapping for you in the US!

We are at the museum tomorrow and hopefully a video to follow soon. To say they are excited is an understatement
The die is probably 1650-1800. Probably made by a soldier from a musket ball. This soldier placed the pips of the die well, but numbered the die-faces inaccurately. Cracking Roman. 1800 years in the ground and still bright and good. Modern coins go ten years in the ground and rot away.

Possibly that tag at 10:30 is an animal tag, though my first thought is that it isn't robust enough, the hole where it had a connector is simply too close to the edge of the object to be something you would have on a domestic animal. It's size in comparison to the ring or clip, would make it too likely to pull free. HOWEVER, I note the hole has been formed with a reinforced ring of metal around the hole . . . that is not accidental given the accuracy of the rest of the design. Though, the number being so large and bold does suit what you want on a stock-tag, where you want to be able to see it at the distance you can normally approach the animal without making it nervous, nervous stock move their heads around, and a tag in their ear can't be read then. I suspect Queen Victoria had NO SAY AT ALL about the coins or the bust used there-on

@@thescottishdetectorist both possibly a sign of its age 😅 I don't know to be fair...it could be that 'a local' spotted someone using one 'this one time' and fancied recreating the item so that they could recreate the game they bore witness to. Not understanding the 'standard distribution' of the numbers upon the die, they just added them to the faces, willy and, indeed, nilly. That said, it would be interesting to dig into the history of the die to work out as to whether it's always been the case that they add up to 7 on opposite faces or not...and, as to when they came to Britain. Could be an extremely early example...it could just be a boardgame piece from a Christmas present in the mid to late 1800s maybe 🤷🏻♂️

@@thescottishdetectorist oh my oh my oh my!!! Do your sides add up to prime numbers by any chance? If so, it *might* be from between the 11th century and around 1450...at which point, after bizzarely having first used the 'adds to 7' standard, they returned back to the adds to 7 standard. Search the interwebs for an article titled: Way-Back Wednesday: Things Get Dicey
@weedfreer
Жыл бұрын
@@thescottishdetectorist there's a link to a study of dice from the Netherlands and the UK on that article. Reading that, I would say theres a good chance you have something from around 1100s to 1450. Possibly, mid to late end of the period as of the 100 dice they studied, only one of them was lead...and it was a 'sevens' post 1450. from the study: Die configuration denotes the relative position of the numbered faces relative to one another. With few exceptions, modern dice have opposite sides that tally to seven, such that the one is opposite the six, two opposite the five, and three opposite the four (commonly written 1-6, 2-5, 3-4). We refer to this as the “Sevens” configuration, but it is just one of many possible configurations. A quick calculation reveals that there are 15 unique possible configu-rations for cubic dice (Artioli et al. 2011; de Voogt et al. 2015), and as discussed below, many ancient dice do not follow the modern pattern of Sevens. Two additional con-figurations, “Primes” (1-2, 3-4, 5-6), where opposite sides add to unique prime numbers, and “Turned” (1-3, 2-4, 5-6), where the die is turned along one rotational axis to place the numbers sequentially, are also found in ancient dice worldwide in higher-than-expected frequencies if configu-ration was randomly determined (de Voogt et al. 2015).
Entertaining hunt. Enjoyed seeing your German Shepherd pup.

The problem for you is...Brasil, is not going to have many centuries worth of glass, or metal in its soil. Brasil's history is rooted in Native Americans who did not have access to glass or metal until around 200 years ago. Native Americans used natural products, such as leather, wood, bone, etc...that will mostly decompose over time. Whereas in Europe, glass and metal have been around for over 2000 years. So...good luck in Brasil...but it is likely you will never find anything over about 200 years old.

Small side point of no real importance. The opposite faces of a die nowadays always add up to 7 (i.e. The side opposite a 1 will be a 6). This die doesn't match modern rules.
