I had an idea for an edgelord character. He would always try to intimidate people and always had some edgy quip and so on. Here's the problem: he also had a stutter, forgot half of the words he was going to say while being edgy, and his hooded cape was just a TINY bit too long, so he would trip over it all the time.

@Ender41948 he was going to be low-twenties, but with a mom and dad that were supportive of his being an adventurer. He was the youngest, so his mom was pushing 60 and would always refer to him as her "big strong adventurer" whenever he came to visit, but he was a "mom! You're embarrassing me in front of my friends," type. My characters are almost always funny, but they're never actual "joke" characters.

That ending breaks my heart. I already struggle to interact with anyone from self-hatred and fears of being too much, and if I got associated with the Malus guy like that and also kicked out, that'd probably do me in. I already am worried constantly about being a nuisance online but if I were to step out of my comfort zone just to be thrown out for being the new guy at a time the actual problem player was there too, I'd probably shut down even more at this rate. It's probably pathetic sounding ik but when it comes to being treated like shit for years I try to take what I can get socially, and often too scared to do anything much more than play games online.

You're honestly better off alone trust me, so called "friends" more often then not, are just "friends" in name only, especially the older you get. As a 32 year old, who's mostly used to my own company, most people are fake as all heck, and therefore you never get to even "know" said people as they truly are, without facades, and getting around said facades requires a lot of willingness to constantly learn about said person, as often as you can, when appropriate. Trying to learn too much, and you come off as needy or stalker-ish, and doing too little makes you seem stand off-ish and unwilling to confrom to whatever friend ground you're trying to get on good terms with or establish a connection with, to begin with. I've found as an introvert, I have to be an extrovert at times in order to confrom to a social norm, and that in the end is the means of connecting yourself, is through constantly being an active listener (which is a hard skill to constantly employ). An active listener is constantly asking questions about the topics a person may bring up in a conversation, if it's about a skill, ask why you like to use said skill, if it's a hobby ask more about it. Having a basic toolkit of topics and skills to use in conversation is important, as an introvert, we need to be prepared ahead of time in order to feel ready for conversations, imo.

My D&D character is an edgelord but it's like... Self aware? He's a Gloomstalker ranger, doesn't talk much, etc. One mission he was hiding by some barrels, spying on a club that was known for basically being a gay bar. One of our party members stumbles upon him and the conversation went as follows: "Hey uh... What are you doing?" "...I'm on the hunt." "...For what?" "A man." *Party member looks down the street at the gay bar, then back.* "This isn't healthy, you know." Contextually I was hunting a bounty for a very wanted wizard worth thousands of GP, but the whole situation played out like a complete misunderstanding, and that's how many of them have been playing out. It's goofy, this guy trying to be quiet, cool, and serious, just keeps lacking the awareness of what he's doing to make everything look very different than it is. We love it. Unrelated: FREE SHELL

Considering they were cosplaying, they were probably the types to take DnD extremely seriously. OP says he disengaged at one point and was just on his phone. I was in a group with decades old friends, pulled out my phone to check a spell because I didn't know where the book was, and the entire table stopped until I finished. I was booted from the friend group not long after for that and trying to find out if we were playing after a holiday because I texted during their other game. They acted like it was life or death. I have a new group I've been playing with for a few years now, and I love it. We're very much into the roleplay aspect of our characters, but nothing is so serious that you can't accept a call that might be important or have to devote EVERY weekend to the game. There’s definitely a “girls - always on their phones” attitude with some people that causes them to be hypervigilant about a young woman being on their phone when they wouldn’t care about a guy doing the same thing unless it was actually legitimately excessive. Just saying - the main “rationale” could’ve been thinking you’re not taking it as seriously as they are, but something just tells me that might have added to it.

@@blazaybla22 no worries - I am a woman (nb technically but AFAB). I'm not really sure, but it's definitely possible. The main former friend was also a woman, but we'd argued before due to her internalized misogyny (telling me how annoying a character I liked was because she did things as a woman, etc). Someone reminded me I also skipped one session (told them several hours in advance) because I was severely ill, and she gave me the cold shoulder for it. Tbh the main issue I think is that for most of the small group, outside of work, they didn't have other interests and the main friend didn't even work, just played video games all day - I don't think they really had anything else going on in their lives so the game took over.

I have my own parody edgelord, they were an anti-Aragorn if you will they were a broody edgy loner of a person and rumours were constantly swirling around about terrible things that they did to the bounties that they took on. He was a Hunter Ranger/Inquisitive Rogue, he took up this persona since it allowed him to pour over jobs and find possible connections to a backstory event for himself and if he was seen as a intimidating person who wanted to be left alone unless it was important only the most desperate of people would come to him personally to ask for help so he could have a good feeling that his time wouldn't be wasted. When it came to bandits or other highway men after a fight he'd pay a couple of them to spread terrible but believable tales about him so that when he introduced himself he could have people shitting bricks. One of his first interactions with someone from the party asking why he acted the way he did was for him to remove his mask and say. "Do you think I enjoy being alone or seen as someone to avoid? No I want social interaction and to make connections however if I do that then it leaves me open for situations like we have now. I'm travelling with this group to take on a mission that potentially could kill me, but with that mask it also allows me to look at things and people through multiple ways it lets me think without being bothered and it lets me take on the truly important jobs so I can live with being seen as someone I'm not if it means helping those who need it and furthering my own goals."

There definitely feels like there's some not right here. Malus comes across as no older than maybe 16, possibly younger. And a troubled one, at that. Perhaps I'm too accustomed to society being crap these days but it seems odd to me that, in this day and age, they're being allowed to go to complete stranger's houses unsupervised, though if they do come from a troubled home environment then that could explain that neglect and their behaviour. The other explanation is that Malus and the OP did in fact know each other to some degree and so going together raises no alarms, and were treated as a single entity by the group when they were kicked out but the OP chose to omit this in their story. If they didn't know each other, it raises more questions about the OP and the group. Either the OP is causing issues by themselves and is omitting this or is doing nothing/not enough to help diffuse the situations that are occurring. If it's the first, then fine, they get kicked out too, no questions asked. The second is definitely harder to do in this case. It doesn't make you look great if you just sit back and not really try to intervene when someone is de-railing the session but it's also not their usual group so how much do they step in without stepping on anyone's toes or crossing boundaries? And frankly it should be up to the hosts to keep control of the session. It seemed like they were being too patient with Malus and at least trying to make it work to try and benefit everyone but this clearly wasn't going to work out and more decisive action needed to be taken sooner, even if it means following through on your words and kicking them out early. And when I say decisive action, I do not mean letting one of your group members throw stuff at someone else. As amusing as it can be to think about sometimes, that is not how you deal with anyone, let alone what seems to be a troubled tantruming teenager... This should never have been allowed and we don't know if any action was taken to deal with that incident. And that irks me. Which leads me onto the group. The OP wondered why they needed to advertise for new members but I think the story paints that for us. They're clearly very close-knit and very serious about how they play and that's not really a good environment to be trying to introduce new players into. It puts up walls and there's very clear evidence in what story we were given that this is happening and the outsiders are being treated a little differently than the others. Obviously, this isn't helped by Malus's behaviour but you still shouldn't tarnish every new player at your established table with the same brush. If the OP really isn't causing issues then when you kick Malus out surely it's courtesy to ask the OP if they're related to him in any way? Perhaps establish this in the hour or so of pre-game socialising that apparently happened? Or were the outsiders not included in that socialising? I can certainly see that being the case. Whatever the case, it feels like this group shouldn't be advertising for new players at all and keep their play between themselves because they've clearly got their own thing going on and it's going to be very difficult for any outsider to climb over their gates and walls and be properly welcomed in. And so my final point will be this. I don't really play D&D myself as, thanks to my own mental issues, I find it difficult to engage with others face-to-face and roleplaying on-the-fly but I'd have thought that if you're going to be inviting people you don't know to your sessions then the DM should be talking to these prospective invitees at sufficient length *before* the event to set the expectations for both sides and work out if this is going to potentially be a good fit or not for both of you and not waste each other's time... A "turn 0", of sorts. If this wasn't done then it's no wonder why these stories exist as you're basically rolling dice and hoping you find a good group or good new people for your group. And if this was done but the OP ignored it before they turned up then they may well have stumbled unknowingly into an issue that saw them get the chop too...

But since he is an enchanted familiar, separated from his master, he is one step away from becoming a chaotic evil murder hobo to get back to them. (Him being part of the party and one of the characters being the goodest boy is keeping my character in check from going evil)

I remember I played an edgelord twilight cleric of Eilistraee who just wanted to look cool. They would use sending every night to call their mom and try to do it as far from the party as possible. They did everything they could to send money home to support his family since her dad left when she was like 7 and she was the oldest of the kids. Her family eventually ended up in a manor and she died killing a hoard of fire giants smashing a bridge sending everyone careening down Gandalf style. There was a funeral when the party got to meet her mother and they learned her backstory post mortem. I got such little time in session since my cleric did everything in private but everyone loved the fact that I spent so much time in the background realizing everything my character did was to make sure they could have a good life. The campaign eventually ended and the Bard of the group who was a former butler went back to being a butler telling the story of my character and her adventures to her family and friends back home. She ended up looking very cool but not in the way she wanted and it could not have turned out better. She learned what it truly took to be cool

Stuff like this is why I separate the asshole trait from the edgelord trait in my D&D characters. If a character is a dark, brooding edgelord, he should have a strong set of morals and sense of justice, one that doesn't let him trample upon the rights of others. If a character is an insensitive prick, he should have the charm and charisma to balance it out and make sure no one could hold it against him.

I also run a Monster of the Week game and one of the first rules in character creation was "Your character can be as chaotic/lone wolf/unsociable as they want but they MUST be capable of working in a group and taking a joke." My group brought three loner's, two hippies, a socially inept loner with a bad temper, and four cats. There's some personality clashes and some character choices causing trouble, but they aren't actively antagonistic to each other and they listen when I say 'no'. I love my disfunctional little group more and more after these stories.

I can think of only two possibilities. 1 - Guilt by Association, like CritCrab said. OP came in with EdgeLord, and so feared that he would become like him, and make the "safe" (for them) choice of booting both. 2 - They made the choice that they would be fine just 3 players and DM, and made the decision to let the two newbies stay the session but uninvite them afterwards. In either case, giving absolutely no explanation to OP and blocking them, is... incredibly rude. At the VERY least OP deserves an explanation. It kind of makes me vicariously upset, to hear about how OP got kicked with not so much as a "goodbye". Like Crit also said, there probably wouldn't have been time for OP to be annoying given how much time EdgeLord took up with his BS, so I doubt that is why.

His rogue skills mainly came from him hiding from people convinced that he was some evil mastermind or dastardly foreigner, while having to get really good with his bow shoots so he could gather food since most merchants didn't want to deal with him after learning his name. He eventually started the Darkson Orphanage and eventually become a political advisor to the new king (party's noble fighter). The only reason he even kept the name was in honor of his late father....Iam Evilman, who had come to this land as a foreigner who didn't speak the local language and picked their names from random on the town notice board....which turned out to have a bunch of wanted posters on it.

I, having a social anxiety, just couldn't not theoretisize about why OP wasnt just kicked out of a group, but also kicked out of grout chat AND being blocked by group members, which is just spitfull and people dont realy dont do for no reason. Such thing can leave me sleepless even when they happen to other people. Group obviously goes way back with eachother (having no problems with throwing botles at table and being immidiate family and cooking with eachother), such groups dont usually just try to expand with randos out of the blue, only times I see old friendgroups recruiting new players, is when old ones leave. So it is very likely that OP and Malus were invited as a replacement to some old friend falling out and when you meet someone for the first time, but expected to immidiately have same dynamic and chemistry as old friend does, you can't possibly live up to that unreasonable expectation. Also barbarian gets very frustrated very quickly, wich is obviously caused by Malus, but also may partly be him being frustrated about old friend leaving the group, wich may caused more hostility from him. TLDR: group being assholes to OP may be caused by them being frustrated from losing old party member and expecting OP to instantly be as good fit for a party as their old friend was. Just a theory tho.

I was really hoping the story with Malus was going to go all Sixth Sense. Everyone starts ignoring Malus because it turns out (in the DM's world) that Malus was just the ghost of an adventurer who died in the prison and has latched on to the party. They can see him because they were in the same cell, but the guards don't even know he's there and he can't affect them. And the players can't be bothered to spare his feelings anymore. Oh, and the squirrel was catatonic, not dead, because it thought it had been stomped. But it recovers when the Druid gives it counselling. Yes. I am a big softie.
