ANNIE ROSS sings Twisted and Everyday I Have The Blues 1959
Ойын-сауық
Accompanied by the Count Basie Septet, Annie Ross sings Twisted, which features her lyrics set to a Wardell Gray tune. Ross is then joined by Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and the great Joe Williams for a definitive version of Everyday I Have The Blues.

The great Count Basie providing accompaniment
This is the kind of party I want to go to! (well, when we can do that again...............) Can you imagine? LH&R, Tony Bennet, Joe Williams, Count Basie, and others just sitting around, with cocktails, and singing to each other.
This is out of this world , having a great time with the best the world could offer. The Jazz world is poorer without all the cats offered the best of their talent. Lambert, Hendricks & Ross including Williams are gone but their legacy remains with us .
At 2:10 check out a young Tony Bennett. If you're able to wow Tony well then you've made the grade as a vocalist. Annie Ross was a real treasure but as a white woman singing jazz was way ahead of her time. There were of course other white women who sang with jazz groups but they often came across as more pop singers. Annie on the other hand was a true jazzer as witnessed by this clip where she holds her own with legends like Count Basie and Joe Williams one of the all time great jazz blues vocalists. The thing that's great about this clip is how she effortlessly steals the show without stepping on anyone's toes. She doesn't try to compete with Williams on the second tune but just puts the mustard on the hot dog. Ross in her prime here is just PRICLESS!

"Mustard on the hotdog"....Yeah!
R.I.P. Annie. You were a brilliant and unique vocalist.
This may seem extreme to say, but this musical moment is transcendant and to me is redemptive of humanity. 🎶✨
Annie Ross -- the most elegant, wacky, funny, super-cool chanteuse of them all!!!

This is why I love you tube....
I wish at even one point in my life I could have been as cool as this.
Discovered them years ago, and have never tired of hearing their genius. Williams nails it, as well.
This is staggeringly good. There really aren't any superlatives that could do it justice.
There are no words. This is phenomenal.
Time travel....this takes me back....'way back....in time to happy nghts riding around in NYC.....singing along with Annie/LHR/Joe Williams......Golden Days!
I was introduced to LHR by my cousin, and was hooked. Absolutely fantastic and got lots of their songs on my Playlist as well as the great Count Basie and Joe Williams. Great video
I can not stop watching this, amazing
A Star this brilliant will never die..Until paradise.
So sad you have left us Annie! You are loved and will be missed. You were one-of-kind! Rest in Peace...~L~
Goodness, they were all soooo elegant! You definitely don't see that now.
Masters at play.
Lambert, Hendricks+ Ross= Genius!!!!
Love this woman
So freekin' special. Soooooo groovy.... dig it.
A great artistic moment in history. Great artists never forgotten. Absolutely beautiful!!! Thanks for posting.
R.I.P. Annie Ross.
I love the genuineness of their interactions, and the casual and characterful vibe of the room. So quintessential jazz party. Really priceless performance.
I have to say that in that room full of well monied stars, Joe Williams sings circles around every one of them! I have a couple of his Roulette lps and they do not disappoint!
And of course! GREAT music with Lambert,Hendric,Ross,JOE Williams and Count Basie
Golden Moments...
RIP Annie.
They don't make them like Annie Ross anymore. A sngular talent. And with Count Basie. That's like bearing witness to the happenings on Mt. Olympus.
The Good Ol' Days
This had me in tears. I've listened to the LH&R version of Everyday many times and it even runs through my head sometimes when I take my walks. And Joe Williams with the Basie band has me jumping to my feet. But all of them together??? WOW!!! Thanks!

Always, fun to listen to Annie sing Twisted and Lambert, Hendricks along with Joe Williams and Count Basie joining in on Everyday I have the blues. So, cool to see Tony Bennett there, too.
Annie Ross is remarkable.
Love it and in addition to Annie, Joe Williams is just so good here...lotsa soul!
Smokin', man! Just Smokin'!
After watching #EJBFOnline2020 during #Lockdown2020 my friend suggested I research #AnnieRoss as she had recently passed away. Found this link which brought back happy memories as my grandparents used to listen to her music a long long time ago! RIP Annie wonderful singer.
Ridiculously good. How cool are these guys?!? The first version of Twisted I heard was also Joni Mitchell's. But to clear it up, it's a vocalese number: Annie Ross wrote lyrics to fit to the original bop tune, Twisted, by Wardell Grey.

Best version of Everyday I ever heard. Had both the Basie Orchestra version and the LHR with Basie and Willams in my teens back in the mid70s, when my friends were listening to Led Zeppelin.

Amazing Annie
Now that’s a cocktail party
Farewell Annie. You will always be remembered.

And it shows that the Count, who normally laid back and played about as many notes as the Duke normally did (or as Miles finally did, in his last years) really could bring it!

The Count was the ultimate professional as well as a superb creative artist and band boss. No one comped soloists better and made them shine. I only wish the studio check tape of "Billie Boy" working with Frank, humbly, subtly keeping the Chairman in line, were still up on YT.
I'm proud to be a distant relative from this wonderful woman
OMG Joe Williams toward the end. Very unique piece of film.
Fricklin Joe Williams, Basie, Tony Bennett, whos frickin who and L,H,and R too!
Goodness, to be there, at that moment in time. Some of those people must have realized how incredibly lucky they were.
The real thing here...for those who wanna find out what it means...this composition will remain in the history of music!!!
those two guys on the outside of the second song doing the counter bass melodies, wow. so good. those rhythms & harmonies and how they run down is so satisfying to listen to.
Four departed legends.
Annie makes it look so easy - not simple to sing an instrumental solo!
RIP!
This is amazing.
This is from the Playboy's Penthouse television show, produced for syndication at Chicago TV station WBKB from 1959 to '60. Hugh Hefner hosted the show and is in the audience here, along with a bunny or two, plus Tony Bennett and a few other notables. The Basie band really cooks. Annie Ross did not write the tune "Twisted." It was first written and recorded by tenor "sexophonist" (and Basie band alumnus) Wardell Gray. Ross, however, penned the lyrics, and the tune was first recorded with vocals by Lambert Hendricks and Ross, and later by a whole host of other people from Joni Mitchell to Bette Midler. Later, in 1969, Hefner debuted Playboy After Dark, produced in Los Angeles which also ran in (in syndication) for two seasons.

Annie Ross actually wrote the lyrics to Twisted. She made the incredible feat of adding lyrics to an improvised jazz solo of Wardell Gray and she has always acknowledged this. It was first recorded by herself and not with Lambert & Hendricks. It is semi biographical, which makes it an even more interesting piece.
This is beyond fabulous! Can you believe that gathering! All-Star! And to perform with Joe Williams, too! And Annie Ross is HOT! LOVE IT!!!
This is incredibly wonderful...
great video! thanks....
Have 'Twisted' by Annie R. on an EP Prestige Label in UK (EP No. 1) Backing is Teacho Wiltshere (p.) Ram Ramirez (org) Percy Heath (b.) & Art Blakey (drs.) . Reissued recently on Avid Jazz label in UK- 'Annie Ross 4 Classic Albums'. Brilliant clip, love 'Everyday' !
the comedy, THE CLASS
The epitome of cool
A classic!!!
Annie picks really creative spots with those bird chirps in the second song later on. really helps u dig the groove.
One of my favorites Annie Ross with her group plus Count Basie. Thrilling.
Once again, and example of a "live" event that could not be replicated by many of our popular singers. NO LIP SYNC here....

Annie Ross - the best! she wrote the lyrics to twisted which lots of folks have covered. Check her out!
and they were,,sssssswwiinginnn !
Fantastic..
This is about the coolest thing I've seen in a very long time. Live, nothing but talent and elegance on show, and boy, is that rare these days!
This is priceless--thank you.
Oh my man, Basis and Lembert, Ross and Hendrick plus Joe...my favorite ! Thanks Mom
"WOW" What a treat to see this !!!!!
Robert Altman knew. Her "To Hell With Love" in Short Cuts -- marvelous!
I have the version on the album but this is even better.
They did a whole record w Basie that is awesome.
Class.
RIP
What a treat! I got to hear LH&R in about 1960-1 at Miami University, and the Basie rhythm section takes it up a level.

Love this version... Just learned that Annie first recorded Twisted much earlier -- 1952 on Prestige. It's elsewhere on KZread
What an absolute treat! there were a few very low quality versions of this uploaded before, but this blows them out of the water. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this. If I could pick one moment in the past to be present at, this would be my top choice.
She's one of the best!
Damn, that's the music!
I heard Joni Mitchell's version of this a lot in the 1970s and had no idea till many years later that it was actually a much older song.

I still prefer Joni's version because of her tone. They both could certainly hit all those high, fast notes. And having listened to KD Laing cover Joni's "Help Me" tune, I think KD could also do a damn fine rendition of this tune. Come to think of it, I wish KD (and Shania Twain - also with wonderful tone) would switch to jazz exclusively rather than retire completely. I've read that she has said "the muse" has left her"...
Fantastic lyrics and the band is smokin' - thanks for sharing ;-)
Absolutely wonderful and delightful. Swings like crazy! So glad this was filmed as it is remarkable group at the absolute height of their powers. Man this music stills bring so much joy - simply classic. I saw the Basie Band and Williams live in the early 80's and have never forgotten it. And of course, Williams tore down the house with this classic. Standing ovation. No wonder it got added to the Grammy Hall of Fame. Anyone know the show for which this was filmed and when it originally aired?

I saw Count Basie, Joe Williams, and Jon Hendricks each separately. I was raised on Big Band music, and am grateful. Then I got into Blues and Jazz. This performance seamlessly merges them all. So swinging! 🎶🎶🎶🎶
I only watch this show for the music...
