This song is about a crumbling relationship and how you deal with changes in your life, but it's so much more than that, IMO. Beyond the sad melody and aching vocals, Annie talks covers the 5 stages of grief: denial ("Some things are better left unsaid"), anger ("Why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut"), bargaining ("Let's go down to the water's edge And we can cast away those doubts), depression ("This is the book I never read, These are the words I never said"), acceptance ("You don't know what I feel"), to culminate with a single word in the chorus: "Why?". If this isn't a masterpiece to you, then tell me what is.

This song reminds me of when I was a young man and I had just gotten my driving license and enjoyed driving with this music in the car. now I'm 37 and can't drive, I have a tumor and epilepsy. Sometimes life is a shame. But life is also a joy to be able to continue enjoying this music.

That depth and sadness in her voice makes me cry everytime. This song is indescribably beautiful.

Just watched a documentary on Annie Lennox and how she along with Dave Stewart struggled for years for success. She was banned from MTV and ridiculed for her short hair, accused of being a cross dresser, etc. A real story of perseverance. What an artist and just listen to those pipes. A gift for us. Thanks Annie and Dave.

You don’t understand this song until you’ve lived it. It’s been 12 years. While it hurt at the time, I’m a better man for it. Annie has such an understated voice-emotional, graceful, articulate, beautiful. And her beauty is very underrated.

I hear and watch this video and cant help going through an ocean of emotions. I remember thenfirst time i watched this video back in early 90s and it was just incredible to see how loaded with artistry and poetry and all the beautiful lyrics. It brings me back to that moment when i would run to the tv to turn up the volume when this video happened to be on. Its a video that makes u take a pause and admire so many elements. That level of artistry i think its lost today. Compare this jewel to the music videos of today sexually charged that is all about drugs or violence or pornography. Im so thankful to have been born and be on this earth at same time any lenox is. Her amazing music just transformed my life.

I remember when this song was released. I'm 68 now and I still feel the power of this tune. The hurt, the pain, the sadness and yes some happy times that we sometimes suffer in a relationship. Music of today doesn't reach me like the music from the past. Old-fashion i guess but it is what it is.

This song will always remind me of when my mum told me she had alzheimer's. I was first one in family she told. We had a tricky relationship, she kicked me out of home when I was 17 for fighting my older brother. I was 30 when she told me, and said I was only one who wouldn't judge her. My dad died when I was 14. My mother remarried. When I got back home to my flat I cried my eyes out. This song came on the radio when I was in her car and will always remind me of that day. I was 30. She has since passed away in 2018 when I was 40. The alzheimer's didn't kill her she had another illness a hole in her stomach. It was for best as at the end it got really bad she forgot everything. Thought she was 17 and still in Scotland where she was from. She left when she was 18 to do her dancing in London. I miss her so much but I'm glad she has peace. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease love to anyone who has to deal with it in their family. Try to face it with a smile. My mum fort it bravely and always could smile. Peace people love x oh yeah just before she went completely I gave her a granddaughter I can't express the comfort that gave both of us xxxx

It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long. Time sure does go by fast. I remember this song being one of the videos that played on VH1 when VH1 first started taking off.

My father was the absolute master of music…. And this was one of the songs he played on his cassettes in the car…. He never used to talk. Not to me or my mum or anyone EVER …. But I hear this song now he’s passed and I relate a little bit to my dad… just a bit. 😢

Aren't they all distant ....each of them in their special way? And still all they wanted was to be loved by us, I think. My dad was distant and still loved me as much as he was capable of. Once I started to compare him to the even more distant dads of my friends......wow.......he was the best out there....by far.

I'm in my 40s, I love my family with all my heart. I work every hour of the day for them. When I am home I don't say much. I'm normally tired out from work, I don't mean to be distant, I work so hard to protect them, that I really don't have anything more to give. I love them so very much, my life is their happiness. My point is, your quiet and distant Dad, was probably a Dad so tired out from doing his very best to love and protect you. Take care.

Sitting in the dentist chair for my root canal today, this song came on the radio. I remember it from my childhood and haven't heard it for so long. It's so sad that kids nowadays don't even realize that most of the garbage they listen to isn't even music.

Massive fan since The Tourists days, but just like to say that the use of the word 'female' is possibly unnecessary. Not burning my bra here (or wishing to be offensive and i am male, so no gender agenda here), but she is one of the best singer/songwriters ever. I agree with you, Annie Lennox is the ultimate singer/songwriter for me. Definitely shaped the soundtrack of my life, to be fair. Yeah, got a bit of a crush on her!

She's a professional who graduated a music school. Unlike many singers who just like to sing and do it well and then become famous. I miss all the artistry and depth on every level in today's music

Saw her live July 2004. To this day she is one of the greatest singers I have ever heard live. There is no denying her.

I don't know how she's not more well-known. A lot of young people don't recognize her name even though they've heard Sweet Dreams. I think her plain-Jane or androgynous look have kept her from being more recognizable, which is a shame, her voice and soul are more beautiful than most singers I've known of.

Recently told someone as work to watch this video and she wasn't even born when this came out but she going through hard time expressing herself at home and work and I felt who better to show her what it means you don't know how I feel.
