Lyrics
I used to be lunatic from the gracious days
I used to be woebegone and so restless nights
My aching heart would bleed for you to see
Oh but now...
(I don't find myself bouncing home whistling buttonhole tunes to make me cry)
No more "I love you's"
The language is leaving me
No more "I love you's"
Changes are shifting outside the word
(The lover speaks about the monsters)
I used to have demons in my room at night
Desire, despair, desire... SOOO MANY MONSTERS!
Oh but now...
(I don't find myself bouncing home whistling buttonhole tunes to make me cry)
No more "I love you's"
The language is leaving me
No more "I love you's"
The language is leaving me in silence
No more "I love you's"
Changes are shifting outside the word
(They were being really crazy
They were on the come.
And you know what mummy?
Everybody was being really crazy.
Uh huh. The monsters are crazy.
There are monsters outside.)
No more "I love you's"
The language is leaving me
No more "I love you's"

While working for a major broadcaster on the production of Live 8 in Hyde Park in July 2005, I spent the entire day setting up, testing, and fixing various things, ready for the live event the next day. It was around 6 p.m., and I made my way across the park to get to the tube station for my journey home. This led me past the main stage. If it had been Saturday, there would have been thousands of people watching the artists, but the day before, only engineers, media people, and security were on site. Right at the moment I came within 30 meters of the stage, Annie walked on stage and started to sing, doing a sound check. As someone accustomed to backstage work, I know the deal: you don't stop and gawp; you treat it as a regular day at the office. Unfortunately for Annie, I became transfixed and stood front and left, unable to move. That voice-it's something I recall with unusual clarity to this day. She fixed me with a long stare, then smiled and sang to me for a very long period; it was almost like she was performing just for me. I recall waving and mimicking someone embarrassed, she waved back and continued the sound check. I've worked with all kinds of artists in the past, often having a drink with them at the end of a gig, so this was entirely out of character and very confusing. I'd had a long chat with Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd and Robbie Williams a few hours earlier, I don't usually get star-struck. I'm embarrassed to recall just how unprofessional I was, and if anybody in her media team reads this, please pass on my apologies. That 'just for me' performance is something that lives in my memory as vividly as the day it happened. Needless to say, after about fifteen minutes, a big bloke from security moved me on. but It's still one of the most endearing memories of my time working in broadcasting.

How quickly a song can take you back to a certain memory, down to who you were with, what they were wearing. I lost my father in 2021 and it was one of the hardest days of my life. I miss him so much and I think about him everyday. My Dad loved all different types of music and this song reminds me of when we used to drive 9 hours to Orlando, FL to go see family during the summer. He had this briefcase that was for holding cassette tapes, and a lot of the time he would ask me to grab him one, but sometimes he would let me choose. I took my cassette tape out of my cassette player and put in Annie Lennox and I remember him looking confused and then he just had a big smile on his face and he laughed. We listened to side A and B of the cassette and just hearing this song today, it brought me right back to that day. Love you and miss you Pops.

My dad used to play these songs when I was a lil toddler and now I’m 24 living on my own all all these 80,90 and early 2000s coming back to me! Such fantastic music era! Will never be the same again! These songs are memories I wouldn’t change! ❤
No matter what the intent of this song, it had a major impact on me. My mom passed away in 1995. Her lung cancer spread to her brain. Once in her brain it was hard for her to communicate. So the "no more I love you's" and "language is leaving me" lyrics totally captured what I was feeling as my mom's cancer took away her ability to tell me she loved me. I played the song over and over in 1995-96 and cried every time. If I ever got to meet Annie Lennox, I'd thank her for this song. And in case I never get to meet her... Annie Lennox, thank you for this song.

Fabián Ferrada Freddie had one of the best voices in any genre.
I lost my nana several years ago during my 1st pregnancy. She had forgotten everyone during her last days. I never got to hear her voice before she passed on. I haven't heard an "I love you" from her in close to a decade. Never got to properly grieve. She raised me when my mother could not, and I was so ashamed. Miss you, Nana

Eurythmics are overly familiar on radio stations so I think that why we don't pay enough attention - but like you I'm deep diving into their work and imagery which is so versatile, original, intelligent; the production on Sweet Dreams is from 1983, Miracle of Love doesn't even make it into the Guardian list of their top 30 songs, Annie Lennox vocal range of There Must be an Angel Playing in My Heart - just wow, the female Freddie Mercury
Two years ago, my beloved dog Scooter died, my cat Millie died, my partner of 12 years died of cancer, and my Dad died suddenly -- and I was let go from my job after 18 years. I played this song and the video endlessly - crying like I never cried before. Grieving and sobbing as if the tears would flow forever. "My aching heart would bleed for you to see" I vowed to myself No More "I Love You's". At the time, I thought I would never let myself love again - never, ever say it again. Annie's voice, the song, the video were with me through countless hours of emotional suffering and I thank God for it. I've moved on with my life and I do say "I Love You". This video will be a part of my memorial service when it's time for me to go. I will always, always remember Annie's voice, the song, the visuals that carried me during the worst part of my life. I love you Annie Lennox. Always, Kenny

Thanks - I didn't realise it was a cover! I do find her version more devastatingly moving, personally, though she uses much of the arrangement of the original. I'd be honored if some Annie Lennox/80s fans would view my acoustic piano & vocal cover (live, no karaoke) of PRAYING FOR TIME on my channel in tribute to the great GEORGE MICHAEL. As famous as he was, George hasn't gotten his proper due for all the contributions he made to modern music a vocalist, songwriter and producer. But eventually he will get his due. THANK YOU GEORGE. WE LOVE YOU.
I went to see Sting a few years back, and Annie Lennox was opening for him. She hadn't been on stage for some time, (so I was told) and she did this song flawlessly. This song is not about loss of lover or depression. This about going through dementia. Her grand mother. One of the first things to go is ability to express love. As memory leaves, so do the words.
