Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII ~ Douce Dame Jolie ~

Фильм және анимация

My favorite Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII screencaps from The Tudors on this french medieval song called Douce Dame Jolie (Sweet Lovely Lady). Here is the translation of the song if you're interested...
Sweet, lovely lady
for god's sake do not think
that any has sovereignty
over my heart, but you alone.
For always, without treachery
Cherished
Have I you, and humbly
All the days of my life
Served
Without base thoughts.
Alas, I am left begging
For hope and relief;
For my joy is at its end
Without your compassion.
Sweet, lovely lady....
But your sweet mastery
Masters
My heart so harshly,
Tormenting it
And binding
In unbearable love,
[My heart] desires nothing
but to be in your power.
And still, your own heart
renders it no relief.
Sweet, lovely lady....
And since my malady
Will not
Be annulled
Without you, Sweet Enemy,
Who takes
Delight of my torment
With clasped hands I beseech
Your heart, that forgets me,
That it mercifully kill me
For too long have I languished.
Thank you for watching & comments are appreciated.
No copyright infragment intended.
I do not own the screencaps nor the music.

It's sad there are few people nowadays capable of understanding the true meaning and importance of medieval culture and music, as well. However, this piece of art is perfect for those moments when you just want to be with yourself and do nothing more than just breathe.

Hello @@luciaolivia6718. Are you French? I am. Middle-Age French might have been similar to Southern French today called Occitan, where most letters are said in clear mode. An accent I personally prefer by the way... Not being a specialist, I guess the way the song is sung might be very close to realistic way.

Er, nope. It captures the spirit of 14th century Paris. It would have been very old-fashioned, even bizarre, by Anne Boleyn's time. Musical fashions (and the French language too) had moved on considerably by the 16th century.

I was referring to the song itself and to the romance of chivalry which was apparent at the time of the writing of the song. Romance in any case is not 'old-fashioned' and the video though of a different time from the song does actually fit the song very nicely IMO.

By the 16th century chivalry had reached its last gasp and was giving way to Renaissance humanism. Guillaume de Machaut and Geoffrey Chaucer were no more, and Leonardo da Vinci, Ronsard, Marot and Wyatt were where it was all at. Europe was crawling with humanists, Protestants, explorers and... scientists!

People loved the series but I'm not sure what history had to do with it. It took liberties with history left and right. Even costumes were often wrong, being loose adaptations of period costume, or outright incorrect. Example: we saw Sir Thomas More speaking with Cardinal Wolsey, with More wearing the chain of office of Chancellor of England - a position he didn't hold until after Wolsey died. Wolsey should have been wearing the chain. Another example: Henry VIII had two sisters. In "The Tudors", he had only one, and she was married off to a king from Portugal, a king who never existed. He was made up for the series. Why did "The Tudors" do this kind of thing over and over? Factual history isn't good enough? A suggestion: want Tudor-era history as well as entertainment? Watch the films "A Man for All Seasons" and "Ann of The Thousand Days". Neither is a "The Tudors" soap opera. Both are quite factual, and sets and costumes are spot on. Same with the new BBC series, "Wolf Hall", beautifully filmed (night scenes all by by candlelight) though its "take" on things is from Cromwell's point of view.

in series they fabricate to make it more appeasable to watch . a little history not 100 all truth they did fabricate. not about tortures or the wives he had the sister yes and as a costume designer in many plays I have done we try to get things to match or make to be breathtaking to the audience not necessary the true historic value. it is for tv. spo it has to look grand . and in france during those times even in india they had gobs of gorgeaous fabrics and jewels so we weren't there but pictures they should fo went by ffor a code of style at least but in those days the kinds and queens had nice things vs the peasants. so it is to depict that in tv . my pint was i liked the show thanks for posting the music. tv has to have a different take they shouldve hired a historian tho for costumes. in plays we get it right not always in tv tho costs and fussy actors want things.. adn some ppl think in show biz they knew what they were deign i agree on that. a historian tho has to be in set for plays for costume design. ive done a few plays in costume designs and we had to get it right but the music is good thanks, tak vikki

I don´t get the connection betwen this song and Ann Boleyn. The composer Machaut who wrote it lived in 14:th century medieval France not renaissance England. French was spoken in the ruling classes in England after the battle of Hastings 1066 and during the medeaval era because they where french but not until the times of Henry VIII. Anyhow, Machaut was a great composer and it is a wonderful chanson.

The pictures in the video does not transcribe the right time. Henry VIII is the fifteenth century when this song is from the thirteenth century, it would have been wiser to find drawings and arts of Thibaud IV of Champagne, Blanche of Castile, Philip II of France (Philippe Auguste) ....

singer and band : german. tudors : english. machaut and song : french. and those three entites have no relation between them at all, although many people confuse Anne of Brittany mom of Queen Claude, and Anne Boleyn who was english and stayed in england.

The video sure tells the story. The singing should be more romantic. This is not a march...
