Ann Widdecombe: 'I stand by' slavery remarks - BBC Newsnight

In a speech to the European Parliament, Brexit MEP Ann Widdecombe compared the UK leaving the EU to "slaves" rising up "against their owners".

Critics branded the comments "disgusting" and "offensive", but the MEP told Emma Barnett people had interpreted her speech in a "melodramatic fashion" and that she stands by what she said.

    Why, she dodged two very reasonable questions: 1. Why she used loaded language in parliament. She changed the subject. 2. Does she feel opressed picking up an EU salary and pension? Dodged it again. She's a journalist, it's her job to ask questions. Reading all the comments here the central argument appears to be right wingers not liking the line of questioning. It you don't understand how absurd that is when you take into account her 'job description' then it's no wonder we have Brexit.

Funnily enough, I saw a two militant black activists on some white supremacist radio show, and they got along fine, but some dckhead nut jobs were calling in trying to stir up arguments. Dear blackbritgayl. As you used the word "European" you surely (or are you not European) really do not exclude Britain: Super Colonial power, nearly annihalated the Maoris, the Aborigines. Slave triangle (ever heard of it?) Making Jamaica a slave Prison, separating families. Feudal - of Course, you mean the Lords in your Country, fox Hunting, a Royal Family that is not able to unite the Country but take millions. The UK is strong in other areas. But colonism is a rather irrelevant example though, of course, the attitude towards the Third World was quite a different one in the past.

  • @thechadeuropeanfederalist893

    @thechadeuropeanfederalist893

    Her analogies are flawed. The difference is that all EU members have the same rights and duties, whereas in 1. colony - empire relationship the empire is privileged over the colonies 2. peasant-feudal lord relationship the feudal lord is privileged over the peasant 3. slave - slave master relationship the slave master is privileged over the slaves The UK can't control its borders in the sense that all EU citizens have the right to work in the UK, but that's not "oppression" that's a mutual right. All other EU member countries also have to let all EU citizens work in their country, including UK citizens of which there are 2 million who live and work in other countries. The UK must adhere to the EU directives, but so must all other EU member countries and they themselves have made and agreed to the EU directives in the EU council, where each member country including the UK has a representative and veto power. The European Union IS the Union of its member countries. All EU representatives are elected by their member countries. It's not some feudal lord above the member countries. It consists of the member countries themselves. Show me a union of countries that's fairer or more democratic than the EU. There is none. The british empire certainly wasn't democratic. It had no council were each colony was equally represented. The colonies had to obey the orders of the UK. That's different in the EU, where all members are equal and furthermore all members joined by themselves whereas in the UK empire the colonies were conquered violently in war. It is a privilege and benefit to be an EU member. That's why many other countries like Macedonia, Albania and Croatia want to join the EU, too.

I look around my neighbourhood and the biggest benefit scroungers are white families with more kids than they can afford yet I would never think of them as an 'unwanted expense'. The following is the BBC Complaints team response to my original complaint to them , text as show below their response Dear Mr Howard Thank you for contacting us regarding Newsnight, broadcast on Thursday 4th July. We note you felt that Emma Barnett was rude or biased against Ann Widdecombe. There has been widespread criticism of Ms Widdecombe’s choice of words during her maiden speech in the European Parliament, including from many MPs. The BBC believes political figures and others in positions of responsibility should be given the opportunity both to explain their thinking on matters of public concern and answer criticisms of it. The job of BBC interviewers is to put forward the questions likely to be in the minds of our audience. Regular viewers of Newsnight will be used to the interviewing style of our presenters. We don’t consider that Emma was rude or biased against Ms Widdecombe. She was given the time to put across her views and her answers in full, with no interruptions. Emma put to Ms Widdecombe, “It is total white privilege on your part to use the word ‘oppression’ in such an easy, cavalier manner. You’re playing to the gallery.” This was not Emma accusing Ms Widdecombe of racism, but putting forward the point that the context in which Ms Widdecombe was speaking was perhaps out of turn. Emma also reminded Ms Widdecombe about the power behind the words that politicians use to make their points. Your comments have been shared with the Newsnight team, and we’re grateful for the time you’ve taken to share your concerns. Kind Regards BBC Complaints Team

    What else is an interviewer supposed to do except 'quibble' over the words that other prominent and influential figures are using? Perhaps you would be happier if they had a conversation about Ann's clothes? Look up the word demagogue, demagogues need to be challenged on the words that they are using, no matter what their stripes are. The demagogue is completely dependent on false equivalence, for example - the comparison of the EU to that of other nations being taken over by an empire, or slaves being owned and oppressed. It is a false comparison, one that is designed to rile up their voter base, that is it. If you are worried about empires taking over worry about the United States, their corporations are salivating at the prospect we are leaving the EU and they are ready with their tentacles to take over our economy and they are not very democratic either. If this is the level of debate among leavers then i proudly call myself a remainer., the interviewer, in my opinion,asked some good questions that were relevant.

    @@l000tube I would argue that introducing an e.u. national anthem shows their aspirations for the future of Europe, it implies that the e.u. parliment want a European superstate when the actual inhabitants of Europe never wanted this and wish to remain separate countries. As for the USA getting involved, how do you know this is a bad thing as it's never been tried? You say the US is "not very democratic" yet you wish for the UK to stay in the e.u. alliance along side countries like Turkey, your thoughts hold little, if no weight whatsoever.

    @Gaius Agricola I really don't get how it suddenly became about race. Marx used the comparison between the slaves peasants and workers too. The Europeans, over the last 2000 years, have been slaves, then slavelike peasentry, then factory workers and still today many white Europeans have no choice but to work in shitty conditions. I mean I get that black slaves had to suffer, but so did the Germanic slaves in Rome, Greece and later Slavic and Germanic slaves in the Ottoman empire. It shouldn't be about which race suffered the most, but about the conflict of class. Racism is a separate issue, which definitely exists, but shouldn't always be brought up if you lose an argument.

    Los Lobos 1 Hypersensitivity? If someone not only misuses a term, but also applies that terminology in a way that has no grounding in reality, shouldn’t they be taken to task? The only issue here is that journalists weren’t doing their job and asking these challenging questions back in 2016. The only thing we are remotely subservient to are EU trading standards, human rights and environmental regulations; most of which we helped to draft. If we leave the EU, we will still have to abide by most those laws in order to trade with the EU, but as a non member we will cease to have any say in those regulations. In other words we will go from being rule makers to rule takers and Brexit will make us truly subservient to the EU. Oh, the irony!

    The funny thing is, that the EU is willing to let the UK leave totally on it's own terms. With a favourable deal for a limited period of transit as negotiated with the british government or without any deal if they so wish. There are no EU troops hiding in the bushes, there isn't even a lot of attention on the EU side for the UK leisures. We accepted the fact of brexit and deceided it's totally up to the British to chose the size of the hammer with which they hit their heads. So actually was Miss Widdecombes speech futile as is her whole presence in our European Parliament. We, the EU are letting the UK go. Unconditionally, on their very own terms. And if they want to trade with their former oppressor after they left, they are welcome to do so on our terms. Or they can reduce their trade barriers unilaterally to zero in which case we will gladly sell them everything they need.
