An anime before you die list where you go through a list of categories giving what you believe to be the "Community pick" and then your own pick would be cool. Especially interesting to see your views juxtaposed with the views that are considered the popular choices.

This would entirely be the most interesting overall. I would say that he could also do some polls to get his subscribers/viewers thoughts roughly here on KZread, or elsewhere. I've seen many through the comment section say it should be a personalized list and I have to agree with that. I can look at MAL, AniDB, Anilist, IMDB, etc... if I wanted to ultimately see what is the most popular, and it'd be boring just to hear that regurgitated again. It would be fantastic to do it by each genre as well, but it also would take a long time to do that. On top of it, from what I've personally seen out of 500~ anime, is that only 2 or 3 have been "life changing" or unforgettable to the point that I can't go a week without bringing them up. It would be extremely interesting to see other anime that truly means a lot to people individually.

I have a problem with these lists, even if I agree with you. For instance, for me, His and Her Circumstances is a must (up to ep. 18, when Hiedeaki Anno left the series and it totally derailed, but by then it should have ended anyway), as well as Haibane Renmei. I think this should go by category, as I would never put most shounen in a must watch list, except FMA, which I think is not merely shounen, and is basically unclassifiable. Evangelion is par for the course, of course 😋, and so his Serial Experiments Lain. But regardless of quality and other less subjective factors, it's really impossible to do more than recommend those you think are the best for whatever reasons. I mean, sure, just as an example, you can go by character development as a criterion, but even though that's a reasonably objective criterion, it's not guarantee of a good series, and many good series don't focus on that.

What is your favorite style within anime? And when I say style, I mean something like Gurren Lagann's eccentric and energetic pace and animation, or KyoAni's slow, quiet and calm, but effective presentation, or even the dynamic, thrilling and often stupefying visuals and plot structure of battle anime like Death Note, JoJo, Kaiji and One Outs.

Video suggestion that hits upon the last point in this video: A genre or style examination Could do a whole series with maybe one video for each genre or style (Shounen, Slice of Life, Isekai etc) Then go through notable examples in the genre discussing stuff like the following - The the history of the genre and how it evolved. Pointing to some examples that maybe built upon one another, took ideas that came before and explored these more - Discuss what animes in this genre tend to do the same and how they approach this, merits and demerits - Point to some animes that try to do something different with examples of it done well and not so well - Maybe see why one anime is able to pull off exploring the genre in one way but another failed in doing the same Additionally could also do a video series exploring tv tropes in anime, examining them in the same way. Just looking at antiheroes, variations on the 5 man band, Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass and so on. Personally I find these types of videos really interesting and from the views on such videos they tend to do well from the little I have seen

I believe this is honestly the best way to evolve it from a list of 'Must Watch Anime' to something that would fit todays landscape in anime. 15+ years ago, it was all mostly just merged together under one category here overseas: "Anime" There wasn't much distinction between the genres, and to pick out some of the best of the best to tell someone they needed to watch wasn't as difficult as it would be today. A majority of fans of anime at the time would most likely agree with said list, maybe given a couple changes for personal preference. I've always seen/heard the ones he mentioned (Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, FMA) on the list, it seemed almost universally agreed upon. Today, the fandom has grown significantly from what it once was, with many people only paying attention to a handful of genres instead of everything that comes out as a whole. Due to modern internet and computers, we aren't just limited to what companies in our home countries decide to import. That access, along with so many more series, is responsible for such a list being basically impossible anymore. I would absolutely love to see a series of videos doing as you described, with each one attributed to looking at one specific cut of the anime pie, so to speak. Hit on points of what shows really made the genre it's own, and which shows have really put their own distinct spin on the genre to make it stand out. A top list of anime to watch before you die might not really work, or just be way too long, but a list of anime to watch for each genre would be much more realistic with today's anime scene. To anyone who read all this, thank you for your time. Keep up the good work, and may excellent series be in your future.

I think the solution to the dilemma of making an "anime to watch before you die" list is to craft it with the community on a KZread livestream. You can make a YT video to request people submit anime's for consideration and run through however many you want that you feel are worthy of consideration. During the stream you devote so much time to each anime you've picked from your viewer's suggestions and have a conversation about each one. With a bit of luck you'll hopefully have something of a list put together by the end :).

I always find more personal lists more interesting, especially when it comes to topics like "To Watch Before You Die". Listening to the reasoning and explanation why a certain made or not made it onto the list is more helpful than mirroring the wide consensus. I am not only interested in the popular titles or the mainstream opinions and those lists already exist.

The western anime community was much more mature in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Since choices were limited back then, nobody minded watching a show that was over 30 years old, and that gave us a much deeper appreciation for the medium. Now, getting an anime fan to watch something older than 10 years is like pulling teeth.

@@mordi9286 It depends on the Visual Novel but yes you do have 'input' though you can have the text set to auto if you don't want to press X or click with your mouse every time, or access the menu for the options menu (and also kinetic novels are just reading and no inputs at all from the player but they are more so a PC only thing I think not heard of any on console), some are just choices, some have a spin on things with how you make choices like I came across with the Oreimo ones fan translated or have some pet the character option (Nekopara it's optional and doesn't effect the game or say the minigame in Fire Emblem that isn't in western versions of the game but are in the original Japanese versions and increases the characters bond or trust or some system) but still stick to the Visual Novel side of things for the most part, some are Rhythm games, while some like Danganronpa have general movement like Adventure games for exploration or minigames that have platforming, puzzle and other elements in or outside the court scenes. The Toradora one also had a map to walk around or a cleaning minigame I think. Can't remember what the Haruhi one had if it was a trust system also. All fan translated PSP games I've only briefly checked out so I'm only going off what I remember but yeah were cool things either after the events of the Anime (in the case of Toradora) or around the summer vacation part of the Anime in the case of the Haruhi one. While others are more their own story. That or the Shakugan no Shana game with Visual Novel cutscenes and Battle sequences but it isn't a proper JRPG or Beam Em Up like others that would have VN cutscenes but a larger focus on the combat, world and so on. Depends on the developer's intentions of course but yes most of the time you are either reading or doing puzzles. Either way Visual Novels are just the Japanese version of Graphic Adventure games and obviously have appealing visuals which Text Adventures do not. I won't deny that they are the lowest form of gameplay version of Adventure games subgenre out there that are still released today unlike the West which has Point N Clicks or Walking Simulators as an example of lowest gameplay Adventure games as every other developer has combat (Action Adventure, RPG and so on) or some other element or level of complexity to them in some form. In the end yes the general idea/draw for them is 'reading' just like in JRPGs without English voice options and with other or no other gameplay than choices. I could also just recommend a Red Bard video on any VNs. kzread.info/head/PL09gI1JUq3yNroBsiUKqPNmEV_xv-Cc-R Either way I think VNs are interesting topic to cover in a video [and I think of them as 1 of the topic three among Anime, Manga and Visual Novels for products in this sort of culture/medium] (it's ok to not like them or find them boring as they can be sometimes, but they can be nice to read when not in the mood to play something with constant button inputs or your fingers being tied but still wanting some progress in a game) whether the more good clean ones (the ones by Key or other stand outs from whichever period that are accessible or those fan translated, or Dating Sims/Eroges as long as it's 'cultured' and suitable of course rather than the pure garbage) just like Picture Dramas and Drama CDs, while the latter two are merch bonuses yes I find they still stick out even if this niche thing in the Anime spectrum like how people talk about old OVA series and what interesting series came out of that time.

DUDE! I'm not a huge Gundam fan myself, but Zeta Gundam is still one of my favorites. I think you'll love it, even if it doesn't displace Turn-A as your favorite! (Potential spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam below, though they're probably things everyone already knows). A couple of my very favorite scenes in all of anime are from Zeta Gundam: when Amuro finally decides to join the fray and encounters, and instantly recognizes, Char in his mobile suit, knowing who he is without even seeing him, and then the next episode when they finally talk for the first time since the end of the One Year War and Char's (supposed) death. What makes it so intense (to me), is that the last time Char and Amuro saw each other, they were fighting to the death aboard the space station A Baoa Qu as it blew up around them, each blaming the other for the death of their beloved Lalah Sune, fighting until their mobile suits gave out, then exiting them to shoot at each other until they ran out of ammo, then grabbing swords and continuing to try to kill one another, only to be separated by the destruction around them. And now they have to face all of that to fight on the same side, at least for now.

A list having the anime you should watch before you die, I think should have the personal preference element in it, otherwise it is just numbers tellling us to go and watch the most viewed shows existing (and finished) out there. As long as you mention that a said anime appears in the list for the reasons that made you pick it up, I prefer that!

Lists about these kinds of things should always be your favourites and why you like them, and why you'd recommend them. Listing of the most liked or watched series is pretty dull, and something anyone could just google. I personally hate it when people make their own opinions into supposed facts, and on the other hand, more objective measurements, like the number of people enjoying something, only gives you a measure of appeal and popularity, both of which aren't that relevant to an individual, only to statistics. I'm far more easily swayed to watch something if someone explains why they like it and why they think I would like it, instead of rambling thing like really good, the favourite of the season, great show. But I'm more of an old school anime fan, I only watch those that appeal to me, I don't really care for seasonal stuff unless someone convinces me to watch them.

I watched the list way back and it made me get into my favorite series period. As someone mentioned in the comments, the way it should be is to create categories and each category (by genre or influence) having a legacy choice, community choice and your personal favorite. Although it would make for a long long video I think that should be probably close to ideal way to go about it. Cheers.

You could input 2 entries for each category (however you would want to split them up). The most popular for the first and then your favorite for the second. I believe this would cover both camps. Popularity could be based on MAL rankings or a poll you made.

I think there’s value in a list done as you explained in this video, an anime that is the “best or most classic example of X”. That way people in our multifaceted anime community of today can just pick and choose what to care about based on what kind of shows they like. It doesn’t need to be “you need to watch EVERY anime on this list before you die”. Just “if you like this type of show, THIS is one you need to see”. I would lean a bit more into cultural relevance and zeitgeist-y shows (either when they came out or currently), if only so people can recognize the influence that certain shows have had on anime. So I would always keep Eva (or, alternately, Utena) and Akira/GITS, but I love classic anime so I might be biased. But I agree that it should only be completed anime. Which is tough bc there are so many anime I love that were never completed.

I think you can definitely have both a personal list of Anime you recommend someone watch before they die, and have a more broad sweeping list of Anime recommended by the larger community as a whole that people watch before they die. For example, I personally think Fruits Basket (2019) is a series people should watch before they die as it deftly weaves together many staple anime genres (slice of life, romance, drama, comedy, supernatural) into a coherent and beautiful package that most people would enjoy. However, knowing some people may not be down to watch a series that is going to be over 60 episodes long by the ending, the popular choice for a slice of Anime that covers many of the same elements as Fruits Basket but in a much more easily watchable package that is still widely beloved by the Anime community would be Your Name. Obviously a 60+ episode series is going to have more to say about Anime genre conventions on the whole vs a single movie, but a movie like Your Name is a lot easier to recommend as an "essential watch," in terms of covering a lot of the things that make Anime romances, dramas, comedies, supernatural mysteries, etc... so rich.

I think that a list like “anime to watch before you die” should be something of a consensus among anime critics rather than just a popularity contest. It’s similar to how there’s a list of the best films ever made compiled in conjunction with film critics. I think a similar anime list would be most useful if it were something along those lines.

  • @TadDonaghe

Of course, that begs the question of “who are the anime critics?” Obviously this channel, but there are others, and then a list compiled for an American audience might be wildly different than one created for a Japanese audience, etc.

I think "watch/listen to before you die" lists are personal expressions of what is important to someone about a particular media or genre. Like, if I composed such a list, I likely wouldn't include Trigun. Not because I think it's bad, but because I don't put as much importance on the how anime can swap between serious and wacky. And if I did include it, it would be for how it mixes sci-fi and western tropes and how it uses Vash's pacifism to make a point about violence and it's use.

I think it's possible to make a community-worthy list. But it'd have to be a pretty wide poll of the most worthy animes listed as options, the top 10~20 results would probably reflect what most people look to in good anime (Although might outshine more... niche animes that probably still deserve a watch from an average viewer standpoint).. but what do I know.

With questions like what to watch before you die, I've come to a place where I only ask people to get a sense of who they are and what they value, as I am much more interested in WHY they chose what they did than the choices themselves. Recently had a similar situation where I told a good friend an album that I realized would be one I would like to listen to while dying (morbid as the thought is, I'm not suicidal or depressed, nor was at the time, so don't waste a concerned comment on my behalf) and he, after a moment of thought, told me one for him, and after I listened to it I asked him the next day why. It was fascinating, though I won't share his rationale here.

I think it is worth noting that the number of good animes available is considerably larger than it was in the past. I recently got back into watching anime after taking something of a break and I find myself playing catchup. There are now so many good shows that I feel I will be working hard to watch them all. So perhaps a bigger list would be a good starting point, recognizing that we now have a much larger anime landscape to explore.

I think that to me as a viewer it is interesting to see a list that tries to be a digest of shows that try interesting things and may open me up to liking new genres. That brings a tad more objectivity and you can expand on it and also show your reading of them and what you find makes them noteworthy, without committing to being some be all end all master list. Another option is to pick anime that represent a given era (like 3-5 year period).

Talking about ‘anime’s you need to watch before you die’ Fruits basket is ending and when it does, I would really appreciate your take on the whole series. Now I know you already have multiple videos on Fruits basket and made some references to it through your other videos but I just feel like it’s so big of a show that it would be weird if nobody touched on it when it reaches it’s final end. I mean, it’s not as popular as many shows but still is popular enough that I think there would be enough people interested in other people’s opinions on the anime. And also I mean... it’s Fruba! Do I need to say anything else? Listen to that name! I don’t know maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but would you please be a plum and consider it, fruba’s just so close to my heart and I’m sure many would agree.

I don't think there is a need for specific anime that ppl need to watch before they die, but rather, I believe it's more appropriate for a person to have at least seen one anime from specific categories that encapsulates the entire anime viewing experience. For example, my categories would be: 5-An old age mecha show (anything pre-2000s) 4-A cute girl doing cute things show 3-A non-Ghibli anime film 2-A complete shounen series 1-A magical girl show Bonus: Any dubbed anime, an isekai or video game adjacent series, a harem or ecchi show or even both at the same time.

Questions.... hmmmmmm..... 1) Something you do quite often in your reviews is talking about specific staff and their previous works, something I don't keep track of because I'd like to watch and judge the show on its own merits, without influence from unrelated previous works. Excluding obvious big names (off the top of my head, people like Mamoru Hosoda, Gen Urobuchi, Yoshitoki Oima, etc.), are there any personnel you feel we as an audience should be more aware or would like to see be given more of a spotlight? And why? 2) Are there trends/pet peeves with current day anime that disgruntle you that you also seldom get to voice? Would you be willing to share and/or elaborate on a couple of them with the next Mailbag Showdown? 3) How do you feel about the concept of watching something not-so-great every now and then to better appreciate the great?
