I think The Summer Hikaru Died fits very nicely into the japanese gothic genre. It's set in a small, rural japanese village in the modern day, it's character rather than plot driven, focuses a lot on the interpersonal relationship between the two leads and the tension within that relationship. There's grotesque imagery, body horror, a focus on folklore, and a cult. And it's so damn good!

This was great! Especially the musical stings, they added a lot to the comedy. I appreciate the balanced analysis you provided. Anime so often represents a blending of cultures, and it is a richer art form for it. I see no need to restrict the gothic or any other genre to one culture’s expression. The themes of art are the themes of humanity, and therefore universal.

Do people actually like Tokyo Ghouls’ characters? To me all of them seem like over the top caricatures. And the handling of the themes was clumsy at best.
