Anime Analysis - Shakugan no Shana (Commentary)

Фильм және анимация

Sorry again about the wait for this one. I suppose that's what I get for reviewing a 72-episode anime and making a 15-minute review out of it.
Next review will be a ticket to damnation.

FINALLY a proper review of Shakugan no Shana. I'm still surprised how it hasn't been reviewed by some of the other high-tier anime reviewers, considering how much of a classic anime SNS has become... Anyway, great review as always, ShadowACS. Shakugan no Shana being my 2nd favourite anime of all time, you bet I love this series to no end, to the point of having become a big fanboy. However, I'm not blinded so I can't see its problems, especially its 2 biggest obvious ones: 1) the slow/boring 1st half of the 2nd season, and 2) too many damn characters in season 3. But, even with these, I still love this anime. Amazing characters (mostly for the main ones, and a few supporting ones), unique and out-of-cliche-yet-not-too-much story, an outstanding soundtrack, great voice-acting, great animation/art/visuals especially in season 3 (made by J.C. Staff, what else to expect?)... out of all the anime I've watched, SNS contains the biggest amount of my favourite characters! (Hecate #1, Khamsin #2, Shana #5, with Yuji, Sydonay and Rofocale (the musician Denizen of season 3) being important honorable mentions). As for whether I think SNS3 is either the best or worst season... well... i don't really know tbh. Each of the 3 seasons has its pros and cons, handling them very well respectivelly. I think i'd choose S3 slighly above S1, simply because of how even more unique it became compared to other anime. Having the protagonist Yuji becoming a "bad" guy, while at the same time, seeing how the Denizens aren't really evil and how Flame Hazes aren't saints either, was a great plus for me.

Well apparently a high tier anime reviwer Arkada/Glass Reflection (if you've heard of him) is going to make a review of it in the future. Which I will probably watch to decide to attempt this show. Nothing against ShadowACS, but I like to have a 2nd opinion and his tastes are a little more close to mine.

Laxikan123 I can understand that; it's always good having opinions from multiple people. Personally, I'm fine, since most of the time, i have close to the same opinion as ShadowACS. I love the hell out of Shakugan no Shana (2nd favourite), but obviously nothing's perfect. But, I will agree with that ACS said: I've seen quite some people say SNS is average, or who dislike it a bit, but I have *never seen* anyone hate SNS, which is amazing. As for Arkada, I know him and I watch his reviews. From his "Poll results" video, he's gonna review SNS someday, but it's not gonna be anytime soon, though.

I'm only half way through season 1 or so, but I think the reason those twins were so fucking weird was to reflect on Shana's introduction into what love is. Her seeing them kissing like that influenced her views a little and added to her inner struggle. However, I do agree that they could've done it better or replaced those creeps with some other villain. I can't wait to watch more of this show. ^-^

Hey Shadow! Have you seen Mushishi by any chance? If no, it's one I'd recommend. It's very atmospheric and relaxing to watch (in my opinion). ^^ It's genres: fantasy, mystery, supernatural & adventure. :) Great review by the way! Haven't seen Shakugan no Shana, but might do it some day in the future.

***** Technically it does. Hecate needed a vessel filled to collect enough emotion to make the Silver appear, which in turn, would power the core of the Statue of Pride. However, it definitely wasn't worth using up an entire story arc just for that plot point.

The thing with season 3 is that is the only season that follows the original novels 99% of the time.Season 1 did follow the original novels a lot, but it is adapted in a weird way to cut time, like for example, the first and second novels are mixed, and their plots are intertwined in the anime. Also, they never made any mentions of things that were not relevant to this season, but did had relevance in future plots, like for example, since the first book the plot that the treasure inside Yuji was created by Pheles in order to make his human boyfriend an eternal existence is explained, also, since the first book there is talk about the Serpent of the Festival. To be fair, Season 1 is self contained and I suppose they never really expected to have a second or third season. But this also creates a problem, because the ending of season 1 is completely original for the anime, and that's one of the reasons why starting with season 2 they had to kind of make it seem as if it never happened.Season 2 is, in my view, the worst in terms of how bad of an adaptation it was of the original novels. Because of the mess they created with the ending of the first season, which not only had to pretend as if it never happened, but also it kind of made them drop the content of almost 2 novels, because they just couldn't connect the plots. So what they did instead is for the first half of season 1 they did this original story where they explained a lot of important plot points that were dropped on the first season. For example, the fact that there was a barrier around Yuuji's treasure that meant no one could take it, actually happened on the original novel when Sydonay Metamorphosis tried to take Yuuji's treasure and his hand blew up, and that is the reason why he knew that was The Reiji Maigo, while in the anime, Sydonay was only saved by Margery who attacked Sydonay, so they actually used half of a plot from the Shana video game to explain this (the first 2 episodes of season 2).For the second half of season 2 the plot was once again on sync with the novels... until the final episodes... and this is also kind of a problem, because in the novel it was supposed to be the moment when Yuuji became one with the Serpent of the Festival, and in fact the transition was a little bit showed on the second season, with Yuuji becoming more aggressive and more dismissive of Shana, but instead they did this whole ending that kind of destroyed the internal turmoil Yuuji was feeling, and instead gave Yuuji and Shana kind of a happy ending that never really happened in the novels.Season 3 on the other part, pretended as if NOTHING of the original stuff from the previous season happened, and went to directly adapt the novels almost verbatim. Also, Season 3 was a little bit rushed, because of all the season this was the one with way more material to adapt than the other 2 (specially the second season, that season was the polar opposite, it adapted very little from the original novels).TL;DR Shana 3 is how Shana was supposed to be, but was a little bit rushed, and felt disconnected because of the decisions of previous season to leave relevant plot points, and to add things that would conflict with the original material, but the staff of Shana 3 took the route of just adapting straightforward the novels, even if it was kind of disconnected from the other seasons.

Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite animes. Shana and Yuji are one of my favorite couples. I'm a Rie Kugimiya fan and this was her breakout. To answer a question you had about S3: The reason why it took so long was because Shana is a light novel adaptation, not a manga. Volumes were released every 3-4 months so the series source had a VERY slow progress. the studio waited until the novels were done to adapt. While I do agree that the sudden dark turn was a bit overwhelming, I liked it at the same time. I found S2 very dragging at times and near the end it was just a repeat of S1 (thwarting Bal Masque). When I was getting into S3, I wanted something to happen to shake things up, and um well, wish granted :)

IMO 3rd season is like suddenly Pearl Harbor, and the introduction to new characters so quickly doesn't matter you don't need to get attached to know them more or vice versa. Them dropping new characters into a bundle so quick shows like an intensity of the war happening.

Everything you said was true. I didnt care for the love triangle too. well I saw no point in it. I also thought season 3 was my favorite while I know lots of people who hated it. I felt that many of the issues people have with season 3 was the change in elements but to me it seemed like it was a good adjustment. Season 1 MC had to cope with being in the situation he was in and was always seen in the sidelines. season 2 MC wanted to fight with shana starting gain more courage and was trying to be by her side. 3rd season we seen a deeper personality of the MC. stuff he's been holding back mentally physically. what he thought about this war. speaking of that the war the war gets addressed up till this now we only saw a one sided opinion of it. Also the biggest thing I loved about season 3 was most of the questions you had or didnt know you had were answered. Season 2 ending I know what they were going for but didnt feel like they delivered. Like I thought it wasnt the ending they were looking for but it just felt like it wasnt the ending they were looking for. As for season 3 I do agree it came out of nowhere but at the sametime it made sense. if you dont explain the situation and ideals clashes of course they will clash. Thats how some wars start. i said it made sense well the elements were always but when we you were explaining the characters I am reminded of how they view things and how certain people they didnt agree how to deal with them. I do however feel that they introduce a ton of characters but I never felt you needed to know them. I mean they were there and had little development but at the same time did they need it? think about in this perceptive. They always talked about all that shana wasnt the only one and there were tons of others some maybe stronger than her. In a ideal situation they could introduce these characters you get to know them but do you really need to or want to? I do feel that the last clash was huge and alot was going on it was hard to tell however I thought it was needed to show how big and fast the fight was. I loved the ending I thought it was a perfect way to end the series many people wanted a more slice of life series ending but I dont think it was possible to end it like that with the super national elements in place. The only thing I didnt like about the ending was it felt too clean. It answered all my questions

In my opinion: Season 1 was good with the comedy/action and characters but it really picked up at episode 16 Season 2: first three episodes are great, then 4 5 and 6 are kind of slow, I think they could have done some different scenarios like maybe a school dance and have it be more comedic then drama angst like we got, 8 to the end was great stuff Season 3: was some of the best stuff I have seen in a long time, I have watched it three times all way through and I see the inner workings of the choices and stuff, I loved the war aspect, some of the new characters, I did not mind about the Yuji turn around because two other animes i love have had that similar case with the main protagonist and it was great. The conflict between the two was a version of romance I dont see often and i enjoyed it a lot. The whole time it was JC staff but it's designs looked like KyoAni i didnt mind since i like several KyoAni works. The music, I had heard Kow Otani in one of my favorite Godzilla films so it was great to have a familiar composer and at first i was iffy on the score but as it continued i loved it all, the Openings/Endings are all great. Lot of people call III a jumbled mess or too confusing, Yea it is not for kids like the other 2 seasons are, you need to pay attention and see the inner workings.

I just finished this show and wanted to watch some reviews to kinda help me find clarity with how I feel. First one I watched said almost the opposite of you. I think Im much more in line with your thinking. I love a good story and character development is so important. Overall the show was really good but this last season felt rushed, not flushed out at all. Such a drastic spin and honestly it would have worked better if at the beginning of season 2 Yuji and Shana became a couple. They really fell short on some of what made the story great which held down the rest of the show. So while the last season Ill say was good, it was far short of its potential by beong rushed headlong and changing the plot so drastically. I love that theu where willing to take it in a direction so unique, its good but done right it could have been one of my favorites I think.

Sorry for the double-comment, but I just finished this anime! The 1st and 2nd season was really enjoyable and I didn't mind the 1st season's ending. I'm not going to spoil it, but having watched throughout that ending, it made plenty of sense with what they have. Also, the dumb love triangle aside, I love how the 2nd season's first half has a lovely slice of life aspect while adding in the late-bloomer in Shana. It goes well beautifully! As for the 3rd season, you NAILED it. Although, IMO, despite it being morally ambiguous, I came to not like both factions and I was left with a lot more questions than answers after finishing that final season. Ahh well, I guess 2 out of 3 seasons is a good thing and shouldn't be a PETITE matter! :D

Excellent review! I have to say that I disagree regarding the third season. Sure, it does feel a little jarring at first, but once you figure out what's going on, it works really well. In particular, the conflict between Yuuji and Shana, and their opposing desires to do what they think is best for each other, is executed masterfully. Plus, the final episode is definitely one of the best that I've seen in anime.

no. the ending of season 2 is not canon. that's why many people are confused when season 3 comes out. also, Yuji becoming possessed actually may have started since season 2 when he became more and more eager to fight. do you guys remember the anti-flame ring Yuji got when they cut Friagne's fingers? well, my theory is that that ring is the vessel of the Snake of the Festival. this theory is supported by Lamies' remarks on Yuji wearing it when they meet again at some point in season 3. also, another support for this is Friagne having the treasure tool Haridan, which is originally owned by Snake of the Festival.

Honestly I wasn't that fond of the second season overall, it's beginning and ending felt kind of lack luster for me and the love triangle went from kind of annoying to unbearable at points. Now to all viewers, I have a question that might be strange but I did watch all three seasons of Shakugan No Shana and I don't understand how little (in a general sense) I heard about the nonsensical trip to Hell that was Season 3. Don't get me wrong, I did like in its own right the first two seasons for how it did addressed the whole "You are not a part of this world anymore and you might vanish at any moment" and for a long part of season 1, the protagonist Yuuji was pretty likeable since I could totally understand his reactions and personal questions. The fact that Shana as a character didn't really interest me for I consider her to fit to much the Tsundere archetype without adding any flavor to it (even her backstory isn't really that interesting when you compare it to Marjory Daw's). The world was interesting albeit a bit slow in building itself and if I find the fights very entertaining (and since Sayaka Ohara voiced a character in it, I was mandatorily interested in seeing her performance.), I think the character development did have a few issues. Indeed, Yuuji slowly started to become less likeable, dense, selfish and all around stupid when you analyze certain scenes closely (but then again I did watch it a year ago) and I personally didn't like the fake love triangle between him, Shana and the sweet Deredere archetype, Yoshida, since he didn't love her at all, was oblivious to her feelings and in counterparts, she was used by almost everyone to serve their interests. I mean : she was willing to sacrifice herself for the man she loved seeing that, in her powerlessness, it was the most effective way to protect Yuuji and yet like in Aquarion Evol, the rule wants that the first girl the guy meets in the story is the one he will end up with. That's not an issue usually, except if you have another love interest as a supportive cast that is an all around better character than the said first girl (I'm looking at you Aquarion Evol.) Then when after the finale of season 1 where she did used the ultimate technique-so-powerful-it-will-kill-her-but-in-fact-no-because-reasons, I was happy to see that a Tsundere confessed her love in a direct and beautiful manner and Yuuji smiling as if receiving it. Okay, I didn't like Yuuji but even if Shana isn't my type, she was really sweet in this moment of shared pain. It was a romantic little moment and overall I felt satisfied, Shana could have ended here since the plot with the villains were more a pretext than anything to begin with. Then comes season 2, not surprising in a way and I was interested to see an anime, a romantic fantasy one at that making a full season with an adult love meaning that they did accept their feelings and now they would learn to know each other more in depth, maybe sharing little moments of intimacy like in the superb Katanagatari (where Kagome is also a Tsundere albeit a far more likeable one.) But... they did go with a route that baffled me : Yuuji didn't heard what Shana said in the finale. The show started to piss me off from this point on not because of how formulaic it was since the whole "I said I love you but you didn't hear it" was done before, but because I had been fooled. I did truly believe that they were going to take risk and I knew it was based on a Light novel so I even speculated it was thanks to that that it did take this path. And they burn my hopes to the ground making one of the duller first season part ever. The episodes revolving around the clone of Hecate wasn't interesting at all and I was surprised to see that I was more interested in the side characters than the actual heroes of the show. Marjory Daw taking first place (and she is really more beautiful without her lipstick.) After that, the second part wasn't that bad, the fights were interesting and even if the fake love triangle was still on, I endured it, hoping they would go somewhere and was a bit disappointed to see that the ending was a bit like the first one except I kept thinking why she didn't use Alastor's attack (I might recall his name wrong) since she was safe from being killed by it. I know they said it was still dangerous but most of the conflict in the end would have been resolved if she had used it. The finale ended on a cliffhanger, a strange one as that but it made me hope that it will get back on track and will at least give a satisfactory conclusion to the whole series. And season 3 happened. I don't know how to describe it. Did they took the Light Novel followed it thoroughly for the first two seasons and then for the third they skipped three tomes ? No really, because between Yuuji fusionning with a Snake God to be with Shana (God that was never introduced and the way he captured/met Yuuji is still unknown) and Shana fighting him, I was utterly lost. Worse, I didn't even recognize Yuuji in the first episode, thinking it was a dark overlord who might be interesting... After that, it was a succession of characters I didn't know off, especially at the end, with some characters we never saw in the show having deep relations with the villains like that one guy whose goal was to kill the Mad Scientist or the suddenly HUGELY important Oracle whose words were absolute. Really, was there an OVA I didn't know off that helped the transition ? And let's not talk about the end of Season 3 where the creatures we learnt to fear and understand especially during this season to make it worse have a complete 180 and decides to accept to go in another world where they basically will not have what they sought. The belligerent, the agressive ones were all acceptant to be in a world where they will not be able to feed off humans to become more powerful, etc... Well, I will forget then that was the whole point of the season : creating a world the creatures (I forgot their names) would be able to thrive without fearing to be killed. Some of you might think it is an interesting twist but... these creatures does already possess a world where they don't feed off humans to become stronger : their own. This other world was supposed to be in replacement of the human one not being a "home". But baby Jesus appeared and all bowed before the Chosen One I guess. Season 3 was a succession of incomprehension, contrivances, it worsened the character of Yuuji if possible, the ending was below, far below average and some characters we never heard about were suddenly important to the plot or subplots. The fights were fine sure but besides that, there was not much to like. So I honestly ask : Did you love all three seasons of SnS ? If so, why ? I am really curious. Take care, Plénitude Logging out

I don't know when I will watch this but thanks for a great video, i just wish the ending of the show was thought more highly of. i remember liking this anime. but i remember it having some really annoying things happening. i remember yuji regressing in his decisions and goal, like he swears he will train and grow more power and yet he goofs off and because of that problems arise when the next villians appear, and i remember really disliking the last season since the solution was so simple and clear that i had no idea why the writer wrote it like the way they did.

Season 3 didn't come out of nowhere. People seem to miss the fact that Yuji erases his own existence at the end of season 2 and we get a glimpse of him as the enemy in the Shana S epilogue. The problems with the show ultimately come down to the filler in season 2 replacing what could have been novel material that sets up the finale. It's extremely sloppy presentation, but the seeds of season 3's plot are in fact seeded early on. The only major mistake I believe was never foreshadowing the Snake of the Festival's existence and Bal Masque's true purpose.

here is the short version of someone else's review and they are quite the same. Martin's review of Shakugan no Shana Final was less positive; he described Yuji as having been made into a different character, criticized the addition of a large number of prominent characters without sufficient development, and described some things as not making sense, although he praised Shana's development over the course of the third series.

So now that you have reviewed all three anime, what do you think about the characters Rie Kugamiya voiced? Rie Kugamiya is a Japanese voice actress that voiced Louise from Familiar of Zero, Taiga from Toradora, and Shana from this show. Too many people I talk to think those three characters are the same just because they are tsunderes whose voices sound the same. Great review on this story, by the way!

  • @Jai137

ned821 The differences are simple. Shana is perhaps the basic archetype for the short Tsundere kind of female love interest, and in that sense works very well(also, she's an action girl) Taiga is probably the more realistic version of the short Tsundere, and also(in my opinion) the one with the most depth. Louise... needs some getting used to, but is still a good character, if probably the bitchiest. Just not my favorite.

1:00 People disliked Attack on Titan because it was an action bait troll. Many who liked it at first found out very quickly that the premise of the show brutally changed from an action-oriented semi-horror plot to a slow, political driven show. People wanted to see struggling humans overcome the odds. Instead of fighting against giants, the main characters become giants themself, making the premise of the underdog obsolete.

I really loved Shana as a character while the the opposite is true for Yuuji. Basically, I hated his guts as a character. I tried to understand that he was a teenager and all but characters are supposed to grow the further the series develops. His character seemed to become worse with time. When characters hide the reasons behind the actions/decisions, I expect a good reason for that. In Yuuji's case, I seriously couldn't find any reason apart from the fact that he is a drama queen which is one of the characteristics that I despise with passion. The series was enjoyable over all though. It kept me hooked and wanting to watch the next episode. Margery was one of the best characters in the show and topped only by Shana.

Oh and I'm curious about one thing: in stories if good people fail to save innocent civilians who get zero information on their personnel lives die the audience seems to think "good conflict", or something like that, but when some innocents are introduced who immedietly die while kinda having their own identity, at least more than some random civilians, its criticized for not being able to care about their deaths. um...so bassically if random civilian dies=good writing but if random character who had a name and some connection dies=bad?

SPOILER ALERT!!I agree the premise is kind of hard to put into words but I disagree that the show did a good job explaining. I like the show it's enjoyable but i'm also not feeling guilty about knowing of it for years, seeing a bit of it but never really gave it a chance, and only getting to it now knowing J C Staff worked on it. After feeling a little overwhelmed by all the anime out in the world and finding only ok series to watch while not really being able to sit down and watch one all the way through without thinking perhaps there's something better out there, I checked out MAL and utilized it organize all of the anime on my lists by studio. I've since been using it determine whether a show is worth checking out. a way to basically sift through all the anime in the world. I discovered I like almost anything J C Staff works on and one of the series that a friend of mine loved growing up popped up and I remembered it had all the things I liked yet for some reason I've never given it a chance. I decided to turn it on and check it out and I like it, I do, but there are so many things I dislike about it and one of the most annoying problems is how incoherent the show is. I watched 4 or so episodes and even as I've seen 18, i'm still unsure of what the premise exactly is and shana kind of pisses me off, it's like one minute she's really strong and the next she can't do anything. it's like the writers can flip a switch on her making her a badass (well they're trying) and the then she's suddenly a damsel with a sword. her boyfriend also switches from being useless to having some unknown amazing power. he's the hero and then he's weak. they also have another flame haze that befriends 2 classmates of shana's and her boyfriend's but otherwise i'm still lost as to why they're still in the show or what their original purpose was in the first place. I like the show and the characters but I have to wonder why they're there. also I just finished the god forsaken flashback. it was so painfully boring. I don't know what to think of Shana yet. still deciding. nearly done with the first season.
