Anime Analysis - Deadman Wonderland (Commentary)

My longest anime review yet. Also the one I've been getting the most requests for. Enjoy.

    I think this COULD have been a great anime if it were longer and if it actually developed and explained what was happening.

    AGREED. I finished the anime about 3-5 weeks ago. And the ending just made me disappointed in the anime. And I didn't get what happened in the last episode. And what made me even more disappointed in the anime about is that they used the ONLY OVA to explain one of the character's back story. You'd think they'd try to explain who's the redman. So... yeah. Long story short, the ending just left me disappointed.

    Yeah, just who the hell was the Redman, and what was he doing? I can't even remember all the unanswered questions I had, there are so many of them. Guess you 'just have to read the manga' as they say.

    Well this DID happen in our reallity... it was called the Colloseum and yes thousands of "normal" people did go day after day to watch hardened criminals fight for thier lives or die bloodily.I understand it was quite a while ago but looking at history human nature hasn't really changed all that much. Not arguing with you just trying to make a point

    A lot of people have brought up that argument, and while I didn't make this very clear in the review, the point I was making wasn't that human nature would never allow something like this to happen. My point was that it was ridiculous for it to happen the way it did in modern-day Japan.

    Personally, I think this does somewhat fall in line with reality. Back when the world had gladitorial arenas political leaders enjoyed a live, up, and close brutal end to people. Even later, executions during the French Revolution were also made public so anyone, even children, could view such things. Public executions still continued well into the old west, public hangings for criminals for instance. This is just another part humanities dark nature. We desire this and perhaps Deadman Wonderland, in it's own way, shows us that we haven't changed at all. Simply being a fan of the show, myself included, isn't that proof enough already?

    1. Shiro's character does have a unique “spin.” I'm pretty sure it's shown at the end of episode 5. 2. Tamaki wasn't the Director of Deadman Wonderland, he was the Promoter. Shiro's grandfather was the Director, and once he dies midway through the anime Tamaki “officially” takes over. 3. On the outside, Deadman Wonderland is a carnival for tourists. It's natural for them to assume that no one actually dies. 4. What did you think of characters like Crow, Minatsuki and Nagi?

    I suddenly remembered an episode of Tales from the Crypt where this guy received a heart transplant from a cat and afterwards realized he had nine lives. So he gets a job at the circus where people pay to watch him die in an impossible stunt and come back to life. There's even a scene where a kid is given a gun, kills the guy, and everyone cheers. Made me think of this review.

    The "lawyer" later seems to have some pull with the government, or at least the group sent to check in on the wonderland. Not to mention there was a massive disaster that struck enough fear into everyone to warrant the creation of such a facility in the first place. It seems like it would have been in the best interests of many people for the deadmen to be treated and sentenced in such a way.

    There's more information that's cleared up in the manga. If they do make a second season (doubt they will, they didn't include some pretty important characters in the first season) they will probably be explaining about all of the things you are wondering about.

    John Ree I felt like if the story was rushed. For example the training of ganta was badly written. We left crowd he almost didn't have blood he wasn't able to crowd told he "you need a break you don't have enough blood" when he see shiro he sundly have can take on the undertaker. And their is also a lack of character development why don't we see ganta and shiro talk of when they were young it is an important step for their relation andband is messing. On like shadowacs I am ok with the begging of the story i did watch the other anime with similar storyline

  • @cream476
    @cream47611 жыл бұрын

    in the manga it did go on past the point where the anime ended and it explained more about their pasts. the reason ganta chose to stay is because he felt he would always regret not finding out who the person who killed his friends was and the best place to find out who it was waould be for him to stay there and gather more information.

    It's sad that there are reviews like these and don't know about the manga? It puts a lot of the issues brought up here into perspective given that the anime was cancelled even and will likely never get a second season though it definitely needs one in order to clear up these issues. Also, I am a little irked by the fact that you claim Deadman Wonderland isn't a shonen. It may be a dark one, but yes, it is actually a shonen but perhaps for an older shonen audience e.g. 15-18, not 12-year-olds. It is decidedly not "dark enough" to be a seinen either like e.g. Berserk or Hellsing.

    Rubyfire41 You mean in relation to the manga plot where the "depression" definitely is a pivotal aspect of the storytelling? I also have to say that it is also what made the manga so enjoyable to me even though the climax with the villain was a little exaggerated. Deadman Wonderland is at its core a tragic story but with a mystery perspective so the tragedy isn't made readily apparent from the start, and I have to say it's definitely one of the finer ones I've read in some time too. It was really touching.

    Just because the manga tells the story better and gives better explanations does not mean that the anime should automatically get a free pass. I'll be honest, I've only seen the anime and I've heard about what happens in the manga. Personally, I love Deadman Wonderland. But you shouldn't expect someone to bring up how the manga does the story if it's an anime review. Unless Shadow was someone who does compare the manga (or game) to the anime, then there's no reason why you should expect him to know about the manga or read it.

  • @Kamishi845

    @Kamishi845

    CircusTalia Did you even read my post? I did not say that the existence of the manga excuses what happened to the anime, but as I wrote, it "puts things into perspective" and "[a second season] is needed to clear up these issues". Very different.

  • @CircusTalia

    @CircusTalia

    Did you finish reading my post? "you shouldn't expect someone to bring up how the manga does the story if it's an anime review." That was a response to you saying that there are reviews like this one that don't know about the manga. Whether someone knows about the manga or not, it should not be needed to understand what is going on. Yes, you did say it puts things in perspective, but doesn't putting things in perspective also mean you get a better understanding of what's going on or why? The anime should be able to stand on its own and be understandable without having to know what goes on in the manga.

But then I start thinking, how possible it is to remember memories from that far in your past? They would need to be real affecting traumatizing or something else as effective

    Great commentating. You brought forth some pretty valid points. Though, I would highly suggest reading the manga, if you get the chance. It goes considerably deeper into Ganta's past, the reason for taking Deadman's organs in the Penalty Game, and might just change your opinion regarding the series. I, personally, enjoyed this anime (then again, I'm a classifiable Sadist). Also, I'm honestly surprised you didn't seem to have an opinion on Rokuro, his calculations, and incessant neck cracking.

    Sure the show may be depressing, but towards the end of each episode there's always a moment where Ganta overcomes this despair. This is something that made it great in my opinion. The sick pleasure people get from watching the prisoners is definitely a dramatization of how sick people can be. However, if you take into account things like the Roman Colosseum, its not so unbelievable. What detracts from this anime most is the fact that it is incomplete. There is still a lot left to be explained

    I have some guesses as to why they didn't address it: A) Maybe like Mega said, it was insane looking and seemed to fit in with the park. B) It was a prison type outfit that was made specifically for her for some reason. C) They probably did off screen or in a visual novel or something. D) They were too tired/lazy/insane to even care to acknowledge it. Haven't seen the show so I maybe wrong on some of these...

    There's a difference between a "reason" and an "occurrence". That air-bullet guitar guy, whose name escapes me, they give a backstory where he's this bhuddist-type person, then the earthquake hits and he murders his tormentors to "free" them. Yes they tormented him, but is that really a reason why he became"batshit crazy"? Seeing them vulnerable made him feel the need to kill people? Obviously he was disturbed before that happened.

    the background of the characters missing is not a problem of the anime, is a problem of the 2º season not being made. The manga keeps going and there is a lot more of the past of the characters that explain the loss ends the plot as. It is not a problem with the story but with the lack of continuation from the studio that made it.

    The only explanation they give in the anime is that the promoter is trying to "manufacture" branch of sin, but it's a vague conclusion that you draw from his conversations. Of course, the purpose of that isn't explained until the second story arc. You assume he's trying to make bio-weapons for the government, but that's just a red hearing.

    true but yah, it is halfway through the show and my analysis is that the story is sorta being told from an second or first person point of view. revolving around Shiro. so that being said there could have been more done to tell Ganta's backstory and the reason why Shiro is in the prison to begin with

    I was actually mimicing L from Death Note. You know how he has an L on almost everything? Well I put a "D" in the same font as his "L" as my profile pic :3

    C2 from code geass is another super national sidekick... kind of, I LOVE C2 though :) She comes off more of a best super national friend character to me though. Oh and question! Do you think you could do a review of Black Butler? You have talked about it in a few videos but didn't really go very far with it, not as much as you have for anime like code geass and fullmetal and so on.

    I have a question ShadowACS, do you think the powers in Deadman Wonderland are cool and original or overrated and dumb? Otherwise cool video dude!

    the problem with the anime is that it suffers from restriction of episodes and not being finished. most of the plot problems could be solved though the finishing of the anime

    y'know, if they make a second season you SHOULD watch it. Everyone's pasts are revealed, and Shiro becomes someone really more important than just a sidekick. Well I shouldn't really be saying this because I didn't even watch the first season, I just read the manga (and I listen to the opening daily)

    I want to point out that the Lawyer/manager is NOT the villian in the red. The villian is a huge spoiler so I don't want to say it here and be the jerk who ruins it for everybody. The manga goes on longer for characters to be fully explored,but only the first book is out in English.

    Hey ShadowACS, I'm not questioning your decision but: You say Ganta's character is not that great and is bad for the story because we know nothing about his past. Yet with someone like The Joker in The Dark Knight, we know nothing about yet he is a great character and his lack of information is great for the movie. What exactly is it that makes one greater than the other despite very similar circumstances? I'm just curious about this sort of thing in general.

    But it's been stated that it isn't modern-day Japan. It's post-apocalyptic Japan. The series takes place about 10 years after this massive earthquake, which Shiro/Redman coincidentally caused. Japan is still struggling, and failing, to get back on its feet. It's no surprise that, in addition to stuff like the economy, morality has gone to shit. The Senji OVA shows life outside the prison, and that it's not much better than the prison itself.

    you got the point about their body parts in jars wrong. they do that so they could see how they got their powers when the earthquake hit them... btw ganta mother name is sorea igurachi. she was shot when ganta and shiro were kids when sorea found out that she was helping these people making shiro into a monster. so sorea said she didint want to do that to shiro..

    Hey ShadowACS. Deadman Wonderland isn't EXACTLY popular. BUT IT'S VERY GOOD. It is deserves a second season.
