Animated Grain shading in After Effects tutorial - Noise and textured gradients
A tutorial on animated grain shading, noisy and textured gradients in After Effects.
I break down 2 methods that I've used in commercial motion design projects to achieve different grain shading looks.

This is AMAZING!! Thank you, Ben! I have a silly question that I've been battling with for the past hour and I can't figure it out. When I follow your steps exactly in my own comp, the dissolve blending mode does nothing. When I bring your comp (the one downloaded from DB) into my project, it works perfectly. I can repeat the steps in your comp (Eye Rig 02) and everything works as it should. If I copy your layers into my comp though, the blending mode doesn't work again. I've been working with AE for a long time and I've gone back and forth between both of our comp settings and they're exactly the same...I've even had a couple of my co-workers take a look and they can't figure it out either. Is there any reason you can think of for why this would be happening? Or am I just getting Adobe'd haha. Thank you!!! So excited for more tutorials!
@BenMarriott

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you dig the tutorial and are applying the techniques!! Hmmmm, that's a real head-scratcher. The only things I can think are maybe the layer is a 3D layer (dissolve won't work on those) or that both layers are the same colour (the fill effect hasn't been applied yet.) I'm happy to take a look at the file and see if I can diagnose it. You email it to me at ben@benmarriott.com. And maybe we can get to the bottom of it. :D

@@amandanalette9873 No problem at all, very happy to help! troubleshooting AE is fine as long as it's not an hour before a client deadline o_0 haha. Ok well, I've had a look and tried some stuff and I've come to the conclusion that.... I have no idea what's going on and that it must be some sort of demon magic. Totally bizarre. It works fine if you add any effect to it, (like fill as you said, or even a transform without even adding any settings.) I installed CC 2019 to open the project, so I thought It could be a CC19 issue, (I'm CC 20184lyf) but I started another project and it works fine. I might just be that project for some reason. Maybe it might work if you start a new one. I don't have any real explanations. Truly an unexplained phenomenon.

@@BenMarriott Well first of all thank you so much for taking a look at it! It makes me feel 1000000000 times better that you couldn't get it to work either because at least I'm not crazy haha. 3D artists: using high sample rates, intense optimisation and extreamly complex artificial inteligence to remove noise from renders Ben: "OI LETS ADD NOISE"
@GuidoGautsch

I incidentally love the aesthetic of the noise in Cycles renders 😆
Hi Ben, here's a third method you and your viewers may find interesting: 1) create a shade layer and add a mask as in first method, then add a second mask and set it to intersect (for rim light) 2) make sure your shade layer has "preserve underlying transparency" switch on 3) add noise alpha effect and set "original alpha" to edges 4) add levels effect and set it as you see fit 5) add fast blur with tiny blurriness, let's say 0.3 pixels That's it. ;] Advantages are following: - you can set opacity of shading layer as you need. - noise can be both animated (animate noise phase) or static - levels effect lets you to change the amount of shading drastically, without need to ever touch masks - less layers in composition - not distorting whole compositon there's another thing i'd like to mention: loopOut and loopIn expressions introduce glitching. your composition has 10 frames, 0 to 9. when looped as you've done (and probably 99.9% of other users ever) after effects will skip frame 0 on first loop and then cut loop at number 8 on every other loop. it's after effects bug which - as far as i'm concerned - haven't been fixed yet. sometimes it doesn't matter, but often it does (when looped composition contains animation of character for example). the only workaround i've found so far is this: 1) create composition which you want to loop (again 10 frames, 0 to 9) 2) duplicate your very first frame (number 0) and move it in timeline outside time boundary - in our example on frame 10 3) in main composition do time remap and leave keyframes as they were created 4) add loopOut() expression what will happen is this: - after effects will go from frame 0 to frame 10 - then they will skip frame 0, so next loop starts with frame number 1, but this time loop ends at frame 9 - these jumps repeat forever, but because you made a copy of frame 0 at frame 10, your loop is still intact this might be little bit confusing explanation, so here's a project with both examples (shading and looping problem - blue number is correct frame number, green number is solution, the rest is mess): we.tl/t-7Oh1PrVHoK hope it helps ;]

Mate..... Thanks so much! This might be the best comment in youtube history. I'm definitely going to try out alpha noise. I've never seen that effect! :D And thanks for the looping tip. I've stopped using this method because of all the dropped frames. It was driving me mad. I just copy and paste like 100 layers in a comp haha, definitely not very elegant. Thanks again. :D You're a real one

Is this still working? 1) create a shade layer and add a mask as in first method, then add a second mask and set it to intersect (for rim light) 2) make sure your shade layer has "preserve underlying transparency" switch on 3) add noise alpha effect and set "original alpha" to edges 4) add levels effect and set it as you see fit 5) add fast blur with tiny blurriness, let's say 0.3 pixels tried to replicate this and noise alpha doesn't do anything.
@sexyolga479
Жыл бұрын
@@tiagopimenta1579 hi, it does. if noise alpha doesn't seem to do anything, use levels effect before noise alpha and set it to be used on alpha channel to tweak the coverage of the noise. if there's no gradient or greyscale in the alpha channel and noise alpha has "original alpha" set to edges, you will only see the shape in full colour with no noise.
That loop output is a massive trick - saving me a bunch of time already! Thank you!

Great methods! You can also use the HLS Noise effect and then just keyframe the Lightness value to get a nice looping noise grain texture directly in After Effects without needing to set anything up in Illustrator or Photoshop beforehand.

you are a genius! I wish I could be a better motion graphics artist, but as a beginner, I always like that kind of tutorial! Thanks a lot!
Bravo Ben! Can't wait the next tutorial! After years I've found some easy way to apply loop expressions: the best one is in the last version of Duik there is a Looper button to apply an effect to your property with loop expressions where you can choose offset, cycle, in, out, in&out,... --> Game breaker. Before that, I was using a pre-maid expression in a KBar or in KEYboard, accessible in 1 click, it's more convenient. Hope it helps ;) I really really like your introducing video! I whish you good luck for the next ^^

I'm new to ae and your tutorials are so helpful thank you for sharing! :)
Your tutorials are awesome, but what I'm really jealous of is that office. Those science illustrations are super cool!
Thanks for the tut! About that looping a comp, I don't know if you know about this but I always import my frames as png sequence, just interpret the footage as 12,5 fps and loop it as many times as I need, instead of making a seperate composition where I arrange them to be on doubles by hand. That way you don't have a precomp, but just the footage as a layer! But maybe that's just what I personally like best haha :)
good move, tasteful character, deep feel. Thank you Ben.
Hey Ben, really appreciated this tutorial! Thanks man :) I definitely prefer the second option but agree it could make production of characters and animations tedious so if on a tight deadline I’d go for option one. Love all your work - from Manchester!

Really nice ! You're a perfect teacher !! thks a lot !!
this is awesome man thank you. For a quick and easy way to get the shading to shake like in the second option, you can apply a turbulent displace filter with a huge 'size' and tiny 'amount' then apply a posterize time filter over the top of that and set the frame rate to 12. This will give you the jittery effect you got by looping slightly different frames by just moving the frame around ever so slightly, every 2 frames. thanks for the tutorial i've been trying to figure out this texture for a while!
