Actually, Mr Krabs calling him Idiot Boy, in this universe would be the appropriate deal-breaker here. It's been established in multiple episodes, as well as the 1st movie that Spongebob likes his job more than he does Patrick. In Karate Choppers, when Mr Krabs fired him, he emotionally flipped out, in Pickles, he called himself a failure because he forgot how to make a Krabby Patty right after Bubble Bass criticized him, in Squid on Strike, he started crying after getting fired before "helping" Squidward protest Mr Krabs, and in the 1st movie, he fell into a great depression because he didn't initially become the manager of the Krusty Krab 2. Sure the next morning, he did a drunken rant on Mr Krabs, but then proceeded to get Neptune's crown back in order to unfreeze him. With that being said, if it's one thing Spongebob loves more than anything in the world, it's his job as a fry cook.

Well said! Now I would forgive sandy and Patrick because they regreted what they said. But I would not forgive squidward because he's an asshole, and I would not forgive Mr. Krabs because A. He's a greedy bastard and B. He almost drove plankton to suicide. That is low even for him. Also, I do have second thoughts about Patrick because apparently his stupidity has gone off the deep end and turned him into a sociopath.

Remember the episode where Spongebob's friends were devastated after Spongebob abandoned them to become a jellyfish? And the whole walk of his to his house, past all his friends' houses, when he regretted it? And how every single one of them was there for him when he returned? Whatever happened to THOSE people? I'm convinced this isn't even the same group of characters. It's just some clones with broken personalities or perhaps a parallel universe where EVERYTHING'S WRONG!!!

I think Spongebob reacted more harshly to Mr. Krabs calling him idiot boy because he sees him as a father figure. It's like the difference between your friend calling you an idiot and your dad calling you an idiot. Yes, we know Krabs is a scumbag, but Spongebob doesn't; he looks up to him, which is why Mr. Krabs' insults hurt more than Patrick's, whom Spongebob fights with fairly often and whom Spongebob is at least slightly aware isn't completely right in the head. Like in that mattress episode when Mr. Krabs got pissed at Spongebob 'cause his back was sore from his mattress, Spongebob reacted pretty badly to that too even though it was only a minor thing.

This episode of Spongebob really upset me, especially when everyone called Spongebob "idiot boy". I seriously want to cry because Spongebob doesn't mean any harm and he's a very friendly creature, but everyone wants to act he's purposely messing up things. Poor Spongebob, I feel bad for him.

Has anyone else noticed that SpongeBob has a hole on top of his water helmet at Sandy's. Usually (especially in the early seasons) there's no hole on it, obviously to keep the water from falling out. This makes the robot accident all the more contrived as well.

The title of this episode is what I want to know myself, What did ever happen to Spongebob? It was a good show, now it's just complete trash.

Wyatt Stinson Nope. The process of writing an episode is not as easy as you think.

You know...did this episode need to include amnesia? I feel that it would have been more effective if Spongebob ran away to find a better life in a different city where no one knew his mistakes and faults. Making him forget the reason he left Bikini Bottom defeated the entire purpose of the intro and even the ending part when Spongebob's friends try to take him back home and apologize to him. Half of this movie is nearly pointless because of the amnesia element. I think the whole intro was just a motivation for the characters to find Spongebob and THAT'S IT. But you could have used other methods that would have fit with this a lot better. Like Spongebob leaving town for some business reason and not coming back, making his friends nervous. Mr. Krabs would have a big reason because Spongebob is his prized fry cook and the Krusty Krab needs him. He would also force Squidward to come along with a reason like: You'll have to work two jobs if you don't help us find Spongebob. Seems better than a decorative egg. This whole episode feels so disjointed. Like they took two halves of two different episodes and crammed them together to make this episode.

This episode was aired 2 years after Stephen Banks wrote 'For The Love Of Bubbles', a much better Spongebob story. Act 1 of the special episode is filler, and the book instead quickly gives Spongebob amnesia in a jellyfishing accident. This episode credits 3 writers, including Banks, so that may explain the mishmash.

It’s like the writers couldn’t decide between amnesia and leaving town, so they pick both.

I feel like the order in which he was called idiot boy should've been: Squidward (because it's too be expected and it really shouldn't bother him too much since I'm sure, or at least I hope, he at least somewhat realizes that Squidward doesn't like him), Mr.Krabs (not as expected, but more so than Sandy or Patrick, especially when money is involved), Sandy (she's a close friend, therefore her calling him an idiot boy would probably put him on the verge of leaving, especially after the two subsequent times of being called an idiot boy by two people he considers friends as well), and then finally Patrick (for all the reasons MrEnter said, and because it's obvious)

My least favorite was definitely Gone. I was expecting when I first saw the episode that all the Bottomites were gone because they were preparing a party for Spongebob. Instead, I found out that the Bottomites were assholes who abandoned Spongebob because they were celebrating No Spongebob Day. Absolutely horrible and definitely disappointing. It wasn't funny in the least.

Yeah, that was one of the most terrible episodes ever made of SpongeBob. When 11 year old me was wondering what drugs the writers were on to create a mean spirited plots where the ENTIRE town ditches SpongeBob for several weeks (possibly months) on end to lose his mind due to lack of social interaction just to throw a rave in the desert and burn an effigy of him to the ground. If everyone I knew did that to me IRL, I would never trust anyone ever again and live a life off the grid forever, this was not okay when I a preteen about to go into middle school a decade ago and as an adult, these writers at Nickelodeon need to be fired and blacklisted. Maybe we should take SpongeBob as a show and push it to a better network that won't ever screw the show up this bad ever again.

Because he's such a jerk and a bully to SpongeBob. Also I can't stand his hatred of SpongeBob it's not healthy.

In the Earlier Episodes, Mr. Krabs was greedy but it wasn't all consuming. Like he still had a heart of gold and looked out for Spongebob. And Squidward was a annoyed by Spongebob, but he didn't completely hate him like he does now. Patrick use to be stupid in a funny way, but now he's like an asshole to everyone. And far mor self centered.

"Whatever happened to Spongebob?" I ask myself that every day.

This episode actually has a valuable message “You don't know what you've got till it's gone"

Well you can't really appreciate it if the execution is bad. For example: the Last of Us Part 2 tries to tell the player that revenge is wrong. Problem is that the game gives the player no choice but to kill every enemy EXCEPT the person you wanna kill, when they should have let you CHOOSE who not to kill. This episode's lesson of "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone" is badly executed, not only because everyone was mad at him for accidents, but because Spongebob didn't remember the bad things they said, and there's no payoff.

This episode made me cry. No joke, I literally cried and said, 'How can the writers make this shit, and pass it off as funny? Because I sure as hell don't see it.' The amnesia bit felt like it was added at the last minute in an attempt to add one more smelly dud to an otherwise already dismal dud of shit.

If you thought that was bad...what I really hate about The Clash of Triton is that the ending irreparably kills the rest of the episode. It's even worse than Gone because it's even more sudden and has less reason to be there! Let me sum it up for you. At first everyone is happy to see Neptune and Triton reconcile and don't mind that Triton destroyed their town, but when they hear Neptune thanking Spongebob for giving him Triton, they do a complete 180 degrees and unfairly berate him. The episode ends with everyone chasing Spongebob and Patrick, angry at them for the thing they were originally proud had happened. Boo! April 18, 2019, 1:00pm

I mean, I can understand Squidward calling him idiotboy since he gets mad at him all the time, but the rest, NO. all SpongeBob did to Patrick was crash into him, and what did Patrick do? Call him idiotboy, and also get mad at him for the cake he spent all day making. For Sandy, that log was in the way. SpongeBob should have just walked over it, but he didn’t, but it wasn’t his fault, he tripped over the log. Not to mention Mr.Krabs just thinks that when he’s greased he’s fine but when his money is greased he’s angry. Why couldn’t SpongeBob stay in NKC longer?! The rest of bikini bottom treats SpongeBob like trash, as shown in such examples like “Grandma’s Kisses” and “Stuck in the Wringer”, not to mention that in Seasons 1-3 (excluding Grandma’s Kisses) they actually care about SpongeBob, like that one time in the episode “Fools in April” where they actually care about him and blame Squidward for making such a horrible prank. However, seasons 5-8 show a much different side to the bikini bottomites, examples such as this episode, and that other episode I listed “Stuck in the Wringer”, not to mention “Gone”. What is wrong with this town?! They’re so mean to SpongeBob (5th-8th season) and they treat him like he’s a problem. Why?!

I thought seeing Gary's shell breaking was more repulsive than Spongebob's hideous face. There are people in real life, usually small children, who have killed their pets by hugging them too hard.

4:22 Notice how SpongeBob's water helmet is on upside-down, just for this one scene. That makes this scene even worse, since SpongeBob hasn't worn his helmet like that ever since "Tea at the Treedome". It makes the scene feel even more contrived.

The biggest problem with this episode, is that it's incredibly mean-spirited. For some reason, everyone has a problem with SpongeBob, and call him idiot boy, even though it's not his fault. It also feels forced. I can see if SpongeBob did these things intentionally, but all of them are accidental. I also agree that it's structured badly.

I think the Amnesia subplot was requested by the Nick Executives hence the title "WhoBob WhatPants". I guess they believed a lot of people were suckers for this cliche. I will say I'm not bothered by the Amnesia cliche but I think the Bump on the Head type of Amnesia is overdone (even in Garfield and Friends and Batman the Animated Series). The Lilo and Stitch episode, Amnesio (which was the first amnesia episode I saw as a kid) at least did something unique about it.

I just noticed something weird: why was Spongebob using his two-holed helmet (English is not my main language, sorry) instead of the one-holed he uses in like every episode after he meets Sandy? That was just unnecesary.

11:42 -AMEN. And this is a problem a *lot* of shows have (think Family Guy, or pretty much every non-sketch show that had comedy black hole Dan Schneider involved). A character being stupid is not a joke. A character having everyone hate them for no reason is not a joke. A character being a violent sociopath is not a joke. (Come to think of it, at least in Dan Schneider's case, he might just think sitcom characters are written the same way a sketch comedy characters, wherein the personality trait *is* the joke. This is not the case). It's yet another admission of laziness when it comes to writing....

Billy Barnett But that's actually the reason why many Spongebob specials have two titles, one that's used by Nick in promotional material, and one that's used in the actual episode (though some of the specials will use the promotional title during the Patchy segments (if there are any), so you are right about the use of the Where's Gary title since it wasn't used there). But doesn't the same go for this episode, because I think the WhoBobWhatPants title was only pushed by Nick as well.

And Aaron Springer was a writer for a lot of Squidward Torture Porns, the same guy who wrote for Samurai Jack and is currently directing gravity Falls. With the fact that even Casey Alexander seems to be doing better on Uncle Grandpa, it's like the show itself is just cursed to have bad writing sometimes.

MrPlayer890 So... I have gathered two things. The second movie literally has 0% chance of saving the show. If the worst writers are doing well (or at least better) on other shows when they have written episodes as putrid as Karate Island and Atlantis Squarepantis, then Spongebob must die because there are no longer any ideas left that can be delved deeply in to be enjoyable. And 2) Spongebob is above the law.

Even with Hillenburg coming back, and some decent writers (the guys who did Kung-Fu Panda, I believe, which I do think is good) I don't think there's any way that the movie could ever balance out the good and the bad of this series. While this movie won't save Spongebob, I have no doubt that Spongebob will still go on. Spongebob seems to be above the laws of how TV shows work, with horrible episodes like the Splinter and A pal for Gary being aired with minimal backlash from people. No matter how horrible it gets, there are always going to be idiots who can't see any quality in front of their face giving Spongebob, and by extension Nickelodeon, the attention and money it doesn't deserve. Just like Mr.Enter said, Spongebob has taught us all there is no low you can't sink to.

Yeah, agreed. One last note, THAT was the episode that woke me up to bad Spongebob episodes.

Spongebob's list just goes on and fucking on. When I really think about it, it makes me seriously sad to know the insane amount of terribly shitty Spongebob episodes. I rather a show finish off with a few amount of episodes under their belt, with a few years in running, and been know to be a good, maybe even a great, show, then have it continue on to become something so shitty, not even old fans want to defend it anymore. After some time, you run out of ideas, good ideas, so you start going to the bottom of the shit bucket, just to see what you can manage to pull out, to use to your advantage. It's disgusting. This series needs to end already, along with a couple of others that you may know NEED to, as well. What makes it even worse is when I saw the trailer to the next Spongebob movie and literally gave up all hope; I'm so done with this series, that I can't even... I seriously don't know what to say about it anymore; Spongebob ended for me after the first movie.

So here's what I learned from SpongeBob today: 1. If you screw up, even if it's an accident, your friends will put you down for it and consider you an idiot. 2. If you run away from home because you feel like no one wants you around, no one will really care. 3. If anyone does act like they want you around, it's solely for their own personal gain and not really because they care about your feelings. Why is this being shown to children again?

I just so happen to have this little Spongebob chapter book called, "For The Love of Bubbles", and it also portrays Spongebob getting amnesia, and it was made YEARS before this episode came out, and it's MUCH better! Know what a cool twist on the bubble phobia would have been? If The Dirty Bubble had decided to make New Kelp City his base and was terrorizing the citizens who had no power to fight back since Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are probably too senile to have heard any distress calls from that far away. A cool villain gets a cameo, the fear gets a reason and Spongebob with amnesia gets to forget that hes afraid of the guy and defeat him.

***** How about a movie like After Last Season? Allegedly cost 5 or 6 million dollars to make, but only aired in 4 theatres, with all prints of the movie burned.

I think I also remember this episode being falsely hyped in the commercials like Truth or Square. Do you really need to lie to audiences to make them watch a spongebob episode? Isn't saying "there's a new episode on tonight," enough to get people to watch?

I could justify how Spongebob remembers his love for bubbles, it's simple, Spongebob has a split personality that shares instinct (IE: blowing bubbles) but not memories like Genocider Shou

I imagine Spongebob's situation happening to two other characters, Beast Boy and Luffy. Not the amnesia part but the everyone calling them "idiot boy" part. Like Spongebob; the other two characters are equally optimistic, fun-loving, friendly and are often viewed as idiots by others due to their child-like nature. But unlike Spongebob's friends; I imagine the Straw Hats and Titans would be singing the Lord's praises, if BB and Luffy ever vanished

If Sandie's so smart, why did she make a robot that's not waterproof even though she LIVES underwater?!?!

And that's funny that when Spongebob is away from Squidward for a while its pretty rare in occasions that's he'll act different than what he normally does. Like for example when Squidward found out about Tentacle Acres he moves and finds out the environment is boring and bland because nothing is really changing and nothings there to change the atmosphere and making it more entertaining also its repetitive everyday until...Squidward misses Spongebob and it turns him into a lunatic... Squidward without Spongebob= Insane... Squidward with Spongebob= Sorta sane but with a lot of anger and depression issues.

I grew up knowing this episode as Whobob Whatpants, so when I saw the title for this video, I thought this was going to be a video going in depth as to why Spongebob isn't good anymore and how it got to be that way.

Is it ever going to stop? The endless parade of complete garbage that is Spongebob? Will there ever come a point where Nick, the creators, SOMEONE just says "Alright, it's official; we've run out of ideas" and just stop making this show? We all know that there will never again come a time when Spongebob is an enjoyable cartoon. Ever. And I highly doubt there will ever be a post-season 3 episode that will be any better than 'slightly not completely terrible'. I can hardly even muster the energy to hate it anymore. I just... I just want it to stop. Why can't Spongebob just... stop? It's becoming draining and depressing, seeing episode after episode of grotesque, often mean-spirited, horribly written shlock. Kids deserve better than this. It's about time someone up top realized that.

They'll never cancel Spongebob because that would mean they would have to put forth an actual effort to make something good or invest in a better series. And, as a lot of people probably know by now, Nick is set on killing itself however possible.

I like how quickly you throw these out without losing quality in your discussions. Also, I can't wait for Samurai Quack.

You know what would have been a good twist for this episode? If the reason everyone in town was afraid of bubbles was because they were living in fear of the dirty bubble

Watching this again I just realized there was a way funnier joke they could have done with the sponge tracker. It should have just showed thousands of sponges because... they're in the ocean and sponges are basically everywhere.

What really made this episode so bad IMHO is just how horribly forced the plot is. I mean, it was just painful seeing how they set up SpongeBob feeling unwanted by his friends for his screw ups. And then everyone calling him the same insult? Who does that? Unless it's an insult he's known for, that makes no sense. Two of the conflicts aren't even worth shooing SpongeBob away over. I can buy Sandy's since her machines were wrecked and Squidward since he hates Spongebob, but can't Patrick just have Spongebob help bake another cake and Mr. Krabs make him work off the money he destroyed? And if that's not bad enough, Spongebob's so called running away was completely pointless. What was the point of him getting amnesia? Why not just have him try to start a new life in New Kelp City because he felt betrayed by his friends, having his friends eventually feel bad for what they did and then sincerely apologize to him. Ugh, what a waste of an episode. When are writers going to quit forcing the issue when it comes to drama? Drama cannot be forced. It has to carefully thought out and done right to make it worth our time to see unfold.

Not only was the egg, delicate enough to shatter when it landed on a SPONGE, but it gets worse when you remember that they're underwater, which means that the impact should have been even less.

The moral of this story: *TUNNEL SNAKES RULE!*

Everybody in this show is so out of character, it's in character to be out of character

you know man your really getting better, you see more complicated flaws, your less abrasive, and your jokes are getting better with our humor. you are truely improving with every episode

Faces like those are what gave me nightmares with episodes like Just One Bite and Jelly Fish Hunter when I was a younger(those faces also being memes later on did not help things, especially cause I enjoy watching youtube poops). Not seeing this particular face in a long time and seeing it just now, I feel I may end up having new nightmare fuel...I forgot that face even existed! ;A; Anyways as always Mr. Enter, I love your reviews and I certainly enjoyed knowing your feelings about this Animated Atrocity.

to me seeing that face was only nightmarish for a few seconds after it was on screen then I sort of forgot about it. the only episode that gave me nightmare fuel was one coarse meal for some reason.

Greasers? Like from The Outsiders?

I had the children's novel version of this story, or to put it correctly; This episode is based on a book that was much better. The book's story is perfectly fine. I remember some plot oddities, but after I got the book and then the episode came out 2 Years later, I (relatively) hated the episode. The wiki explains the plot has a lot more innocence and doesn't make his friends who later search for him, into bad guys, and I think it was even told in a first-person flashback, similar to mister enter's suggestion. BASICALLY read 'For The Love Of Bubbles' if you want to see the good version of this episode. Funfact: I found 3 versions of this story and a spinoff. 1. For The Love of Bubbles; og novel 2. 'WHTS' this Atrocity 3. Whobob Whatpants; inferior book 4: My name is Cheesehead; the 4th version that skips the amnesia setup and adds a later act instead God I wish more people knew about the book, and that Nick didn't try to bury it.

I'm still pissed to this day that everyone blames and scolds SpongeBob because of accidents! Accidents!
