The ironic thing about this episode is that there's a season 4 episode of Spongebob called Hocus Pocus which is pretty much this episode done right. In that episode, Spongebob buys a magic play set and when he uses it, he thinks he's turned Squidward into an ice cream. The reason it works there but not here is because it's established that Spongebob thinks the Ice Cream is sentient and has a good reason to think so and it allows him to stay in character and there are a lot more jokes surrounding the scenario, also, it's made clear to the audience that the Ice Cream isn't Squidward so it prevents the episode from becoming a Squidward torture porn and since SpongeBob is only trying to be friends with the Ice Cream and isn't romantically involved with it, the episode isn't creepy. Also, Spongebob doesn't murder anything when protecting the Ice Cream, that's also important

The episode you're talking about isn't about him being in a relationship (romantic or friendship) with it at all, it's about summoning his shield thanks to his love of ice cream. Yeah that sounds pretty stupid when you write it down, but it has nothing to do with this Spongebob plot...

Techicaly, Spongebob is LITERALY asexual, being a sponge and all. They even made a joke about Spongebob reproducing asexualy once.

The clam scene is the scene why I absolutely hate this episode. If SpongeBob didn't kill clams in this episode, I wouldn't really hate it; just think it was a very weird episode. This one scene alone, however, makes this one of the worst SB episodes in my opinion and is the reason why I never watch it anymore.

If I see this episode or one of the other unwatchable episodes on Nick, I will either refuse to go to change the channel to Nick, or change the channel ASAP if I'm on Nick while the episode is playing.

Well, the "6 hour" scene transitioned to later that night, so its been an estimated 8-10 hours since made. He dropped it in the" water" (goo lagoon I guess?), put cotton candy in it, put on a children's ride, the patty was partially eaten by clams, put in the sand...plus meat usually doesnt last

agreed. plots like this can be done correctly if we assume the food is either sentient, there's a reason for the feelings, or if there's transitions. ren and stimpy, I love chicken, is ripped off here, but they did it way better. the chicken is sentient, everybody is in character, and we get reasons for stimpy marrying the chicken (it treats him better than ren treats him, he doesn't have to do as many chores (between the pair, ren works and stimpy does all the wife stuff, etc.)

Wait everyone, clams appear to be birds in the "Spongebob Universe", and we're supposed to see all species other than clams, snails, worms, and urchins as humans. So Spongebob is a human, and that meant he was literally decapitating and mutilating birds with his bare hands. Not only that, but there was even an episode where Spongebob and Patrick took care of a baby "bird" and cared for it. And NOT ONLY THAT, but in "Pet Sitter Pat", when Pat was about to kill Gary with fire (also animal abuse in the Spongebob world), a clam in a cage which just so happens to be Spongebob's canary or budgie can be seen in the background, meaning that he actually *likes* clams, just except he'll kill birds with his bare hands to save FOOD. What's wrong with him????

This episode seems like a metaphor. Think about it as: Nickelodeon is Spongebob, the Patty is the show "Spongebob Squarepants", Patrick represents other kid show networks, and Mr. Krabs/Squidward represents critics for this show.

Damn, I remember watching this episode when it aired in 2007, and I was only 11 at the time. I was the kinda kid who never thought too much about what he was watching, so I had enjoyed it at the time. Having grown up and garnered a better sense of quality, I realize now just how SpongeBob fell as hard as it did during the mid 2000's. It really is sad.

I agree with Timmy Thissen that the show was in a slump for a while (and a REALLY big one in seasons 6 and 7), but it's gotten better since.

There's this one Mickey Mouse 2013 short, titled Goofy's First Love, in which Goofy being in love with a sandwich worked. Why? The whole episode, we were led to believe that Goofy was in love with the waitress at the diner, and then, in a funny twist, we found out it was the sandwich he was in love with. It wasn't a whole episode about him being in love with a sandwich! And hey, it works for Goofy, because he's, well, goofy. Plus, Goofy ate the sandwich before it started to rot.

oof talk about harsh. maybe that will teach you a lesson in what true friendship is you jerk. but i thought what we had was special! it wasnt now go away! the end.

This whole episode could’ve worked if we saw the Patty actually talking in spongebob’s point of view while everyone else is just looking at spongebob talking to an inanimate krabby patty.

You know if I were writing this episode, I would have flipped the roles or something. Like if a less intelligent character, like Patrick, were to fall in love with the krabby patty instead of SpongeBob. And SpongeBob would try to convince said character that the patty is meant for eating, not for romance. I feel like that would be a whole lot better than this.

+KirbyKips Now that you mentioned it, watching this show in retrospect, it seems like SpongeBob and Patrick switched brains. I mean even though SpongeBob isn't too bright, he's worked far too long in the KK to fall in love with a sandwich he made. So there's no way in hell he would show such obsession over a patty. Also, attacking those clams like that is something I would expect from Patrick. In fact, SpongeBob would usually chide Patrick for doing what he just did in this episode. It's like the writers confused SpongeBob's personality with Patrick's.

no not even patrick would fit this plot hes proven to eat patties before so what would stop him now. Besides i cant think of one time minus the movie he showed any interest in love. So what i would do is have something similar to the episode where squidward tricks spongebob into thinking gary can talk with a voice automated collar he can say things into. have plankton invent something like that where he can implant it into a krabby patty and try to convince either spongebob or patrick its alive/sentient thus leaving the 2 vulnerable in his formula scheme.

Probably the only episode of this show that made me legitimately nauseous.

I always hated that part where SpongeBob literally murders a group of clams.

When I first saw this episode when I was 12 really creeped out, how SpongeBob killed those innocent clams. I like the ending where he ate the goddamn Patty because he really deserves to get food poisoning after killing those innocent clams.

I just realized something, if junior was there, then does that mean that every last clam there was party of Sponge Bob's extended family. He probably killed hi grand children, and daughter in-law!????!!?!!!?!!!!!!????!!!!

It’s best not to overthink this episode, or take this episode seriously. It’s probably the best way to experience the episode. Which really isn’t saying much.

A continuation on your "If plankton tricked SpongeBob into thinking krabby patties are friends" plot. SpongeBob will take all the krabby patties from the Kristy krabby and become friends with them. Plankton will ask if he can take one of his friends home with them. Since SpongeBob no longer see food but fish, he happily replies "yes". Plankton successfully gets the krabby patty and almost finds out the ingredients. Mr. Krabs goes to SpongeBob's house to get the krabby patties back from SpongeBob. Krabs explains that the krabby patties are food. SpongeBob snaps out of it and realizes that one of the patties is missing. He remembers giving plankton a Pattie and tells Mr Krabs. They run down to the Chum Bucket before plankton finds out the formula. Since Mr. Krabs is already in the Chum Bucket,he launches plankton to the Krusty krab then back to the Chum bucket

+James Sultan Should the ending have been the beginning? It seems like they thought about starting it off with the reason, but stopped before the reason was properly portrayed to the audience. "Burrito" is better than "To Love a Patty", but it's structured wrong.

Even when I was younger, this episode made me uncomfortable, especially the part where SpongeBob was killing the clams.

That joke about Junior somehow made me cry a bit. I guess that proves you can put more emotion in this episode than the writers can.

I must say, that "When He Loved Me" joke lasted way too long. I think we would've gotten it after 30 seconds.

that's a good idea, plankton slips a microphone into one of the krabby patties and this causes spongebob to think that krabby patties are sentient thus leading to plankton trying to dupe spongebob into giving him the formula, but mr. krabs finds out and plankton gets busted

I think once Stephen Hillenburg, if he DOES go back onto the show when he's done with the movie, will personally FIRE the people who made the REALLY bad episodes that they did to his show...or at least talk with Nickelodeon since, while they OWN the character, he gets royalty rights since he CREATED them.

This is literally another OOC(Out of Character) moment for Spongebob. Hell, the first time we got him to suffer from character derailment was back in Season 3 with Party Pooper Pants. And everyone dislikes that episode like what they did with I’m With Stupid and that was back in Season 2 with Patrick’s character derailment. The Junior moment in this video was bittersweet tho. 😞👍

You have to wonder how desperate the developers of Rock Band 2 were to want the Patty Song as part of the game's DLC. And you have to wonder what's going through the writers' heads when they were writing this. It felt like this was the point where they vehemently went against Stephen Hillenberg's vision of the series. Although this *does* explain why they think torturing animals is OK in their book, especially if they're willing to have mass murder take place... Seriously, Gary's extremely lucky he wasn't killed off in _A Pal for Gary_ or _Pet Sitter Pat_, judging by this episode

Anybody that knows anything about Rock Band's DLC would know that Harmonix often had no problems getting at least somewhat notable song licenses for each week, unless they're a band under a contract for another franchise (Van Halen/Metallica had a five-year contract with Activision for Guitar Hero) or just plain impossible to sway (Led Zeppelin, old Guns N' Roses). That week was really just an endorsement for Viacom (other weeks served a similar purpose; a free song by Miranda Cosgrove and two Naked Brothers Band songs were also made DLC).

You know, speaking of Metallica, from what I've garnered through my Gamefaqs researches, any song that was not included in GHM (Guitar Hero: Metallica) bar ...And Justice for All and Blackened were all written by Dave Mustaine, and the band didn't want to get involved in a lawsuit, so they were left out completely (most tracks from their first album, 3 tracks from their second). But from what I recall, some of these songs were included as DLC for Rock Band.

I have a theory, what if the baby clam was a the child of one of the clams SB killed. It makes a lot of sense, Stephen himself said that the show is not in chronological order. The reason the baby is alone is because SB killed its mother, that's why it all ways is crying when it's around him. PS party isn't a boy or a girl. ITS A GOD DAMN BURGER

I'm just gonna say it, that montage with "When (S)he Loved Me" playing in the background, actually made me break into tears when I first watched it. I never though an Animated Atrocity video would invoke such an emotion from me, but it was heart-wrenching to rewatch those scenes from "Rock-A-Bye Bivalve" while on the subject of that horrible scene with the clams in "To Love a Patty". I've already heard Pieguyrulz talk about this in his "Every Episode of SpongeBob Reviewed" series; but since he has to keep the reviews short, he just sort of briefly mentioned that it could've been the same clam from "Rock-A-Bye Bivalve", so I didn't really feel the emotions so much - or, as Nostalgia Critic would put it, it's like trying to emotionally connect with Hamlet when all you know about him is that he hated his uncle and wanted revenge. But you, Mr. Enter, have managed to dig deep into this situation and fully explain why this episode is so bad. Kudos to you, man. :)

And you thought that a romance between a sponge and squirrel wasn't weird enough!

I honestly think I know how they could've made this episode work. Maybe SpongeBob thought he heard a Krabby Patty talk. It said some things that made him fall in love with her. Everyone thinks he's crazy. But at the end, it turns out the patty was actually talking because Plankton is inside it, trying to get the formula from SpongeBob. Done. Not great, but still infinitely better than this

Even as an adult the clam scene is really, really hard to watch.

5:33 Welp, the main protagonist of the show just ripped this universe's equivalent of a bird in half. I....I have no words, that's just....something only a sociopath would animate.

9:59 “I thought bad patties were supposed to be incinerated.” Oh well, you know this series doesn’t give much of a crap about continuity. Though it does result in a pretty odd issue with two episodes contradicting each other: my biggest complaint about “Cuddle E Hugs” (aside from being out there even for Spongebob) is that the scene that starts the plot with Spongebob refusing to let Squidward get rid of a rotten patty completely contradicts Born Again Krabs, where Spongebob did know a bad patty was supposed to be thrown out, and it was Mr Krabs who ate it and wound up ill! As you said in your review of “Are You Happy Now?”, it’s fine for changes to the setting to be ignored, but you should not change elements of the characters!

Honestly, the Junior bit was really heart warming.

Another thing regarding the scene where Spongebob does karate on the clams: In the episode "Karate Star" (I don't know whether that came out before or after this one) Spongebob says that the number one rule of being a karate expert is that you should never chop other life-forms or their property. Here he's chopping other life-forms. Spongebob's a hypocrite!

The only things I like about this terrible episode was Patrick saying I was replaced by a sandwich. That line always makes me laugh and sandy

Here's my idea for a plot for this episode that makes sense. Spongebob doesn't just make and fall in love with a random krabby patty. He makes the best damn krabby patty that ever was and ever will be, his masterpiece, his magnum opus of fry cooking skill. Seeing its perfection, he doesn't want it to be eaten, and so he hides it and brings it home with him. He stores it in the fridge, but after a while gets paranoid that something might happen to it while he isn't looking, so he decides to keep it on his person. He begins taking it everywhere, and at first people are stunned by this perfect patty and constantly trying to get their hands on it. Spongebob gets more and more protective of the patty, but never considers it an animate creature or anything, jsut a work of art he has to protect. Finally, he goes back to the krusty krab, and Mr. Krabs sees that the patty is growing stale (not rotting like in this shit pile). He explains to Spongebob that holding onto a krabby patty, no matter how perfect it is, is the antithesis of what krabby patties stand for. They're meant to be eaten, and only by being eaten can it be fully appreciated as the delicious masterpiece it is. Convinced by this argument, Spongebob eats the patty himself, perhaps shedding some tears at first, but then his face lights up as he realizes how good it tastes, and that its taste would have gone forever unappreciated if he had kept it. Thus, we have a slightly sad, but mostly happy ending.

You're awesome MysteriousMrEnter. If it weren't for you, I would've had made terrible stories and fan fictions that are just as stupid and cliche as other stories and fan fictions. Thank you.

Coming from someone who loves romance stories, you hit all the right points on why this one doesn't work. Props to you, Mr. Enter.

Anyone remember in Neptunes Spatula, when SpongeBob was making the krabby patty he drew faces on the pickles with ketchup and tucked them in with cheese. Then he kissed it and read it a bedtime story. But he STILL let King Neptune eat that patty. So yeah this episode makes no sense and slaps pre movie SpongeBob in the face.

***** I haven't seen it, but supposedly the live action/CGI part takes up less than 30 minutes of film time and overall the whole thing was "meh". That's just what I read anyway...

This episode really made me facepalm because I genuinely felt that the writers were saying "We don't even need to try anymore because an episode, whether good or bad, will still make us money."
