@Glen Highland My wife is Indian so when we are here I am always aware of being an outsider or worse, for the most part, except for finer more educated, traveled class of people who feel some value for the Western World rather than just disdain and material greed. But even locals don't get along all that well but we would get on well with Anglo Indians I am sure!

My grandfather was Anglo-Indian, his name was Derrick Francis. He moved to London from Calcutta in 1951 and married my Irish grandmother. Sadly, my Grandad passed away some years ago. I am now trying to research into the Anglo-Indian side of my ancestry and really enjoyed this video.

There are 2 wonderful films about the Anglo Indian community... "Bhawani Junction" a story of an Anglo Indian girl (pre independent India) who falls in love with British officer and the complications and the realities of not being accepted neither as an Indian nor British... " 36 Chowringhee Lane" that depicted the sad. lonely, alienated life of an Anglo Indian school teacher after India's Independence. . Both worth watching to understand how life really was for them before and after 1947...

They love indian food especially biryani with meat... They love dancing. Most want to go abroad and settle down but many are still here... Don't see them a lot now but if you visit the church you see them.... Wishing they grow and multiply...

When I was at secondary school my class mate mother was Anglo Indian and though her father was white so she was 75% European her Indian blood/looks deffinetly came through strong! Very dark black/brown glossy hair, green eyes (from her father)and olive skin tone very tall and slim a total knockout! She made allot of indian food that she would bring in for our school bake sales gosh it was amazing!

As a community, we have certainly inherited the genes of are ancestors, Of Indian, British, Portuguese, French and so on, over at least three hundred years. And as you see in the film. The culinary delights that we enjoy today, I'm sure we're also an influence of the western world. Which we now have adopted as are own, together with the dress code, music, dancing etc. There is much to read on the internet on Anglo Indians, you may find interesting. Thank you for watching and your interesting comment. Best regards.

I had an English mother, an Indian father. I was born in the early 1960s, here in England but I never wanted to call myself Anglo-Indian, (my older sister was born in India) in fact I found it quite insulting to be called Anglo-Indian. (Sorry) also it was assumed that we were all Catholics which really narked my Father as he was a Hindu and he sure as hell didn’t change his faith when he married my mum, and she never asked him too. We kids were allowed to choose what faith we followed, none of us chose Christianity, though we were exposed to it. I guess we were somewhat different, my mother wasn’t in awe of Great Britain, she was born and bred here, a tough Northern girl with a love of other cultures and my Dad was born a Bengali Brahmin who at 93 still goes to India every year and who settled in England in oder to look after his wife’s parents because she asked him too. I am proud of both my parents and their different heritages but history has not been kind to people whose faiths and races have been mixed. Sad really but at least now we can talk about it.

According to the strict definition that they seem to follow, as others have pointed out, you wouldn't be classed as an Anglo Indian anyway. But I'm curious why you never wanted to call yourself one as I assume thats what you thought you were? Was it because of the stigma of being mixed race? What do you identify as? My parents are both Anglo Indians and were born in India but I was born in Australia. So I suppose I don't fit the definition of Anglo Indian either, and I don't often say I am one, unless people are very interested in my background. It doesn't bother me being mixed race, but it does get annoying explaining it sometimes. Anyway you have an interesting story and I hope you embrace both your family roots equally. Cheers!

Absolutely, but that is true for almost any conversion. Nearly 99% of Indian Muslims are converted too and cannot find traces of where they came from. For a long time, the "Indian" (Hindu to be specific) aspect is treated as a lowly attribute both physically as well as spiritually. Said that that is not the crime of this generation. The mistakes must be accepted and one should move forward. The forthcoming century belongs to India and the people of the Indian diaspora.

Its alright dude. Am so sorry that your ancestors did that. My great Grand pA was a lawyer and a freedom fighter too. My great Grand pA worked so hard and fought so that India & his future generation people get freedom from colonials. Why still think of forefathers property ? Work hard and bengaluru will never let you down...infact Karnataka will never let you down. Being kannadiga, being Anglo Indian and being indian and being human is all possible and that too simultaneously. Try to live a happy life and not a money life. Happy life will have enough money in it but money life will never allow happiness to come to you because you will have to stay behind money always (in money life). Lets make this world a better place to live and let live .

Interesting documentary. Having grown up with Anglo-Indians, specially from East and NE India, I can understand them, their mannerisms, joys and their plights. I learnt cooking, wine making etc from a Mrs Morehead, God bless her soul. Her parents were from the South but they'd settled down in Asansol and later in the Tea Gardens of Assam. I remember all the little stories she'd tell us! Feel sad that so many left India, had difficulties being from a mixed parentage, things are so much easier now than it was then. Infact, though I'm Hindu, having studied in a Convent, I think we got along better with Anglos than most other communities! They are a very lively, simple and friendly lot. This easy going nature might have, unfortunately, gone against them, since we do see quite a bit of unemployment amongst the youth. Sorry if I have hurt anyone's sentiments but I feel, the Anglo Indians could have made better use of their education and status in the early years and stayed on in India. Wish the community much love, wherever they are!

We did miss the sun and our familar surroundings. But as I stated in the video, "there was no turning back" phone calls then to India was £5 a minute. A letter, was the cheapest way of communicating. We had to pull together as a family to make it work. A different world then. There was also a lot of help in this country, to get us established in jobs, etc. Thank you for your comment and for watching.

In 1957-59, I had two Anglo Indian teachers in Dehradun in my 2nd , 3d and 4th classes,, named Miss Pamela and Mary in early twenties in St. Mary's Convent in Clement Town. Soon they left the job in early 60s. They looked very fair and lived in the town, while the school was in the cantonment.

Many Anglo Indians taught in English schools throughout India. These teachers were devoted to their careers, and kept decipline. Many a pupil benefitted from this, and are doing well in the world today. I myself, had four aunts that taught at ST Patrick's school, Bangalore. One was the headmistress there in the 1960s and also an aunt (a nun) in Madras. Interesting to read your comment. Thank you for watching. Best regards

Loved the film and all the folk in it, what fab memories! I'm Scottish but was born in Hong Kong in 1954, lived in Thailand, Japan, Trinidad, Middle East n Africa. Recently retired back to Scotland with my English hubby n feel like a fish out of water trying to forget the vividness of life in Asia etc. Most of my true wonderful friends were from those regions so your film resonated with me, adapting to grey, the culture etc but lovely also to be back in the UK. However, it sure takes time as it does making friends n fitting in! Anyway, thanks for the wonderful film, God Bless all! 😄🤗xx

Thanks for a refreshing video on AI’s. I am a proud AI still living in Chennai India, one of my 2 sisters and my 2 brothers live in Australia and Canada, and one sister and I chose to live in India. The India you probably knew in 1962 has changed a lot, and the AI community has adapted come a long way in the modern India with many well educated Doctor's, Lawyers, Teachers, Professors and a lot of youngsters holding good posts in multinational companies, though the AI’s in the railways and armed forces are far and few between these days. My Mum and Dad were also about to immigrate to England in the mid-60s but changed their mind at the last moment when my Mum started crying because she had to leave the rest of her family behind, ironically over the years they all later left India and left her and her family behind. On my Dads side we had the Borthwick’s, Brooks and Rodrigues heritage and on my Mums side we had the Ecclestone and Julien heritage (Will have to look up the rest as I can’t remember).

It was interesting to read your comment. India has certainly changed with progress. I have observed this on my visits over the years. And it's no different in London. Migration did split many families and this was a price paid by many. My mother had to leave her family too. But, we have been very blessed, our family unit are still together and united. The Anglo Indian community of yester year that served with a dedication during British Rule and after, in the forces, railways, post and telegraphs, police etc. Their contribution is indellable in the pages of history. Thanks to the internet, we have some wonderful articles to read on there, of this wonderful, respectful community that I'm very proud of. One only has to take time to read it or watch footage. Hope you get to see your loved ones often. Thanks once again and sincere regards.

My grandfather’s family is Anglo Indian, but when my great grandfather was offered a job in Australia they moved to WA. It’s fascinating because at the time Australia was terribly racist, so all Indian culture was erased within my family as a way of survival. As the film relates, we too as a large young family, struggled with trying to be excepted and establish ourselves. There was no turning back for us. My father, a dark skinned, educated man had to do a menial job to keep us fed, but the passage of time and family unity saw us over this challenging period. And I dare say if was the same for your family. So we have our elders to thank for their courageous decisions they made in their lives and their strength of endurance. It also answered a lot of questions that I have had especially as to why so many Indian people had English surnames. I am an Afro-Caribbean born and bred. What a crisis situation these community is facing since independence. I can understand their situation. May god give them peace of mind. My good wishes for all of them. Jai Hind.

:@27:05 The music "Gealyan sankli soniachi, hi pori konachi?" is originally Konkani/Marathi mix - Goan, East Indian i.e. Catholics from Vasai, North of Mumbai. Good to see Anglo's from Southern India, enjoying party music from Goa/Mumbai. As you said, the Anglo Indian race is slowly dying, either Anglo's have migrated in droves, having smaller families or marrying other Catholic communities from Goa, Mangalore, etc. Anglo's just like other Christians prefered to seek greener pastures abroad as working in India after India got independent, cost of living was high. Working with ethnic Indian folks in India, is not easy as one has to deal with corruption & ignorance of Catholics within India.

I have good memories of Anglo Indians in India in the 60s. My kindergarten and early elementary school teachers were Anglo Indians. They grilled us in our school work. I still stay in touch with one such family in Perth. Their children have internarried.

Thank you for watching and your compliments. As you rightly mentioned, it is a great part of Indian history, and the old photographs, tell the story of how life was then, even before my time. Based on circumstances, many chose migration. But still remember India fondly. The land of their birth, as I do. God bless you.

There was a lot of missionary activity by German missionaries in the coastal Karnataka, my place. They converted many local Hindus and quite a few Goan origin Catholics. Many German men missionaries and some women took local spouses and settled here permanently. They took the local language and culture. So there is no Anglo Indian community here just the local protestant one.

@ Prashanth Kamath. you got to be clear in stating 'my place'. I think you were referring to as Fr. Muller's Medical Centre, Mangalore (Karnataka, India). Obviously, the Brits, did not have a presence in Mangalore & surrounding areas, so no Anglo's settlement. The Mangalorean Catholics are very much there since, they originated from Goa - that's another story.

@@zxzv1 No, not just Mangalore, they were present in many other towns of former Dakshina Kannada district. There are at least three old Protestant Churches in my town of Udupi. Many towns have a mission compound. Even the small town of Kaup of Udupi district has a mission compound. What I was referring to was the missionaries converted many of the Mangalorean Roman Catholics, who were already there, driven from Goa by the rabid Portuguese Inquisition. Many of them converted to the Protestant faith. Quite a large number of them joined the eastern catholic churches (Syrian Catholics, linked to Kerala).

My grandfather's elder brother worked in the British Navy for 30 years or so. He was a soldier. He fought both world wars for Great England. Prominently in Egypt 1914-19. He started a job in the Navy after becoming friends with a British soldier. Since 1920, he lived continuously in London's Golden St37 London S.E.1 . He visited India only once in 6 or 8 years. There he was called by the name Khan. He moved to India in early 1959, after which he did not go to England, London. Her four children are mentioned in London passports and documents. They also got married in India after 1950. In whom a boy was born to a girl in 1965. Passed away in 1966-1967. Unfortunately, he does not have much papers left at this time. British woman is not aware of her children
