I do appriciate your honesty Jack. It is though a possability I think, in this case, that your knowlege about technicalities in singing is taking over a bit too much. Angelina undoubtedly does quite a few unusual choises for this performance. You did mention it, - Angelina did dobbel up on the emotional side for this performance. There was basically at least 4 reasons for this: - Angelina`s childhood dream was to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize consert. This year (2023) iranien Narges Mohammadi won the prize, fighting for womens rigths and equality. - Angelina`s grandmother is iranien, so she is quite updated on womens situation in Iran, and that Narges Mohammadi is, and has been imprisoned for years, in Iran. - Therefor 17 year old Angelina got to sing for Narges` 17 year old twins, both present to receive the prize on their mothers behalf, who they have not seen for 9 years. - Why did Angelina choose this song? As I`m sure you know, this originally was a song for the movie "Unchained" from 1955, about a prisoner longing to be with his loved ones. This is what lies behind all of Angelinas choises for this performance. As we all know that impeccable breath-controll is one of Angelina`s many forses, as it comes to singing, we are aware that Angelina sometimes may "play around" with it, and it happens that even at studio recordings she wants her breath to be heard more than usual. We also understand that in this case it was no "playing around". She was emotional, and she wanted it to show. Because this time it was the right thing to do, artisticly and emotionally. This was her choisees for this occation. And the orcestra supported her all the way, as thay contrasted her with the big build up moments, and she still took it down and kept it low and subtle almost through it all, untill the last powerfull end. You might still see it different, and we can respect you for that. To me though, and many others, this is a pure masterpiece, and one of her best performances. I`m looking forward to meny more reactions from you, and hope that you might get to know and love Angelina even better on the way. Angelina has so much to bring to the world.

Thank you for the comment, this is very touchful, but I deliberately inform myself little or nothing about the performances I go to listen to, precisely because I want to give a genuine and sincere reaction, and secondly because I don't want to be influenced by external factors. I listen and analyze the performance for what it is: a singing performance. All the surrounding factors can help to understand, but not to justify such a performance, in my opinion. However, I remain of the opinion that Angelina is very good artistically.

I appreciate your honesty Jack, I think you made a lot of valid technical points. I do not agree though that she lacks breath control here, what she is doing is deliberate and well controlled, although it may not be to your taste, or be "proper vocal technique". You alluded to it in your analysis, she is trying to evoke the uncomfortable emotions of sadness, longing and desperation. The woman she is honouring is a political prisoner and I believe at the time was on a hunger strike. To me, she sang it this way to communicate a tragic story to listeners, not to impress vocal coaches.

Obviously you are bothered by the shoulders being raised everytime she took a breath. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and many great artists has done the same movements. Angelina and her choices were based on the life story of the recipient and her children. A story worth reading about and then listen to Angelina sing because she gave one of her best heart felt performances anyone can ask for. Angelina has been doing this for a decade and I assure you that she has taken advice as to how to care and keep healthy her vocals. She has great breath control otherwise she would have been done by now. I don't expect all good comments for Angelina but she deserves credit where credit is due.

This was arranged out of respect for the Peace Prize recipients on a very solemn occasion, also sung with more respect to the actual meaning of the song, it is about imprisonment. It could be sung with all the tricks, embellishments, dazzling runs, belting, well all of that, occasion like this calls for respect and restraint which she showed, the whole arrangement was beautiful and very fitting.

Hello again, Jack! I always appreciate an honest and well founded reaction, like you always bring. That being said, regarding this performance I strongly disagree with some of the things you said. You DID touch base on what I personally believe was the reason for her choices here, namely her emphasis on conveying the feelings that this song and lyrics should. I believe her way of breathing here more than anything else was meant as exclamation points throughout, and not the result of poor breathing technique. If there is one thing Angelina traditionally has been known and praised for, it would be her excellent breath control. I will just briefly try to recap some of the background for the performance, to see if it can sway your opinion in any way 🙂 Last year's Nobel Peace Prize winner was Iranian Narges Mohammadi, who is imprisoned in Iran for her women's rights work in the country. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison, in addition to receiving 130 whip lashes. Narges has a twin daughter and son, both 17, the same age as Angelina at the time of the performance, and they are living in exile with their uncle in Paris, France. Narges haven't seen them since they were 12 years old, so very much in tune with what the song is talking about. Her children came to Sweden to receive the prize on their mother's behalf, and they also came to this Nobel Peace Prize concert here in Oslo, Norway. They were sitting only a few meters away from Angelina during her performance, and it must have been very emotional for all parties, Angelina included. At the end of the performance you can see her turn toward them, touching her heart and smiling. What makes this performance EXTRA special is the fact that Angelina's absolutely biggest inspiration in life, and the main reason for Angelina being who and what she is, is her grandmother, Mery Zamani. Mery Zamani is Iranian, just like Narges Mohammadi, and I can imagine the conversations Angelina must have had with her grandmother and the rest of her family regrading the topic of women's rights in Iran. Mery herself was considered a child prodigy, albeit in writing and art. She went to Japan at a young age to study art, where she met her husband, who was ALSO very influential in Angelina's life. Angelina's original "Million Miles" was dedicated to him, after he passed when Angelina was 13 years old. Anyway, these are SOME of the reasons why I believe Angelina opted to sing the song the way she did. She did it in the absolutely most solemn, respectful and elegant way she knew how, and I personally think she did an exceptional job at it. I have been following Angelina for 10 years now, and I rank this performance among her very best, perhaps THE best. (But to be honest, I think I still have her performances of "My Funny Valentine" at age 16 and "You Say" at age 15 just slightly ahead 😊 Have a great week, my friend! Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

Jack, you are not the first vocal coach who has had a problem with Angelina's artistic choice of employing "audible breaths". She uses this same technique on I Have Nothing. Since that was a studio recording, they certainly would have had the ability to eliminate that sound if it wasn't intentional. Angelina will at times choose to use vocal techniques that vocal coaches try to correct their students out of using. Some singers sing to highlight the singer while others choose to keep the focus on the song. Angelina will more often opt for the later. I believe that Angelina intentions were to convey the fragility of the character on the edge of breaking. Personally, I don't see this as a failure or a poor performance but rather a delicate masterpiece.

I've seen you react to her on several occations pointing out the mastery of her art as well as her highly developed skill level while performing... so now, it's at least confusing (contradictory) to hear you questioning her breath control capacity and her ability to completely control her falsetto with her diaphragm; both essential features for any decent singer. For a coach it should take no more than a couple of reactions to assess all her competency levels and skills. So one moment she is the best and the next she bearly knows how to sing. Problem is that lack of consistency takes away credibility!

I will be polite. You have no idea why she was there singing this song and in this particular way. It was at the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony and the committee was honoring an Iranian woman in prison for speaking out about the rights of women. The woman was once being considered for release from prison but under the condition she stop talking about the rights of women. She met with her family (husband and children (twins, a boy and a girl) and she told them although it would be wonderful for the family to be reunited she reminded them how strongly she felt about her views and said it would be impossible for her to agree to those conditions. So, she remains in prison. This event took place in Oslo, where Angelina was born and lived her very early years and the orchestra is a famous Norwegian company, KORK, and Angelina had played with them in her earlier years. And, it must be said Angelina is Norwegian, Swedish, Japanese and Iranian (her famous grandma Mery is Iranian). During rehearsals for the presentation of the song Angelina broke down crying she was so moved by the story of the woman and she was worried she would start to cry during the performance. But, she didn't and was masterful in her delicate approach to singing this classic song. By the way, The woman's (Narges Mohammadi) two teenage children were sitting right in front of Angelina during the performance and all in all it was a wonderful event to honor Narges Mohammadi by Angelina and, of course, the Nobel Peace Prize Organization. Angelina's breathiness was very intentional and I'm shocked for as many times as you have heard Angelina that you couldn't understand it was intentional. Perhaps, now that you understand the story behind the event and the reason she chose this song to sing, things will become clearer to you. If you listen to this again, personally, you will feel the emotion in Angelina's voice. I believe it was a wonderful performance and a striking moment.

If you are not going to be honest, then why are we here for? Is it possible that because of the reason she is performing here she wanted it to be more airy more emotional, no matter the sounds of her inhale. Do you think it was a performance issue? I think for the amount of her doing that were so much, I think everything was intentional. Though there are certainly people who don't like that, and like more of a clean vocal performance. You might be right, but something tells me that she did it intentional, knowing her for years and always focusing on the emotional side of a performance (plus her being a jazz singer, there are less rules in how clean you should sing). I think you might be bothered by that? And maybe like more of a clean vocal? Let me know what you think I would love to hear what you think about this. Do you still stand by your opinion?

I think your reaction is spot on. I love Angelina. I thought the mmmm was used to much. I thought she ran out of air several times. This is highly unusual for her as she can hold a note forever. The ending of the song was beautiful.. It seemed like her voice did not open up until the very end and then she was still a bit out of air. You are the expert in this arena. I would not want you to say a singer's singing is fantastic if it is not. If you did this, I would not want to listen to your comments. Thank you for critiquing this performance with great kindness.

Hello Jack. Good reaction and bravo for telling it as you hear it. I'm not sure why this rendition is recommended by all the Angels in preference to AJ's Portsmouth performance of the same song. It's not awful, just lacklustre. Context and all that I know. To be honest, think the orchestra is the real star here. To me, Angelina of late, is a bit all "over the place". Don't know if she is trying to become more radio-friendly (commercial imperatives and all that) but her voice seems to be going through a change as well. If you are interested here is the Portsmouth version: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaV-ybx_fburdqg.htmlfeature=shared. Sound quality a modicum off due to it being fan curated (Big Angie Fan and friends) but it is still top shelf and captures Angie at her best. Cheers.
