Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. Angelina was just a couple of months past her 9th birthday when she recorded this. I just attended her concert in Las Vegas this week and it was practically an out of body experience hearing this young lady sing. She is so amazing it's unbelievable. There have been many different versions of this song, and you may be more familiar with one of those because this is actually very close to the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins - it was his picture on the candle holder at the start. You can find his performance(s) of the song on YT, if you search his name. This young girl, young woman now, has been listening to the classic jazz and blues standards since she was around 2 years old.

Note to Angels: We all know that the KZread date doesn't always match the year of the recording, but how is the reactor to know if we don't tell them. I suggest adding that info to your suggestions. A good example is "I'm Still Holding Out for You", which has images of Angelina at 12, even though she recorded it 2 years earlier at 10.

Another spell was cast by 9yo Angelina. Let’s analyze the video: 1st you see how small and cute she is. 2nd you see she is barefoot (story below) 3rd You see her making her “Wish List” of suggested changes to the song. 4th the band leader taking note of the changes. 5th Angelina is holding a candle with “Screemin’ Jay Hawkin’s (original artist 1956) picture on it. 6th the old soul in her voice. She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

Why does Angelina go barefoot Based on the true story of when she was six years old, Angelina met a homeless, shoeless girl. After they talked for a long time, she gave the girl her shoes and vowed never to appear on stage again wearing shoes until all the world's children had them. Since that time, Angelina has always performed barefoot in public.

The first time I heard this performance I wept with sheer joy and felt privileged to share the same planet with her.

I remember Screaming Jay Hawkins singing this in 1956. Angelina arraigned this as a true jazz format where Jay did it as the first shock rock performance.

Hi, Paul, from one senior citizen to another! Thank you for featuring Angelina again. She was just turned 9 years of age in this performance. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZread, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

This was basically the way the original was sung by "Screaming Jay" Hawkins. Plus she is 9 years old in this.

This is considered one of if not the best performance by a 9-year-old ever. She had already won Norway's Got Talent about 1 year prior. After winning, she, with help from her Uncle Michael, her new manager and agent, hired that band full-time. Obviously a very smart move.

The date on the video is when it was uploaded to YT, not when it was recorded. I Put A Spell was recorded in March 2015, but wasn't put on YT until 1 1/2 years later.

This is the first video I ever saw and the first time I heard of her. I saw it 1 yr ago. I immediately fell into the rabbit hole. I'm 78 yrs old and have been a music freak since I was 5 yrs old and have been to many concerts over the years. I absolutely love Angelina Jordan's music.

This is one of my favorites of Angelina's catalog. She wrote a song when she was very young for her grandfather who had passed away called Million Miles. It's gorgeous and definitely worth a listen! 👍🏼

It's Angelina unleashed! An incredible display of technique and talent from a 9-year-old! This is the performance that made me an Angel for life. This is her own arrangement based on Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original(He's the guy on the candle). I can't wait until she grows into her adult voice. Angelina will always captivate you. Howie Mandell called her "hypnotic". I agree that there is an amazing number of very young, extremely talented musicians to be found today. There is another young lady I would recommend you listen to, if you haven't already. Her voice is just as unique as Angelina's, but in a very different way. Her name is Diana Ankudinova (Dee-AHNA AN-ku-DEE-no-va). She is from Russia. Most people start with her cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling In Love", live in a singing competition.

Great reaction ❤ Revised information hear concluded that Angelina was only one month past her 9th birthday when this was recorded. (Almost FOUR years earlier than you thought when you travelled to it. It's impossible to quantify the importance of 4 years at this age of course.) She would probably have been able to do the same performance while she was still 8, only a month prior. Just saying😅 Incredible. When the whole world knows who Angelina is, this performance will go down in history as one of the best ever by such a young artist, I'm sure. Just keep going back in time. She doesn't get any less impressive. (Well, OK… eventually you reach a point at which she was singing more or less like a normal child [in particular, having problems with being pitchy in the louder passages]. But that was before she came to the world's attention on _Norway's Got Talent_ . Basically everything she's done since then has been anywhere from "good for her age" to, well, let's just say the highest praise I would ever give any singer.)

This is actually the most similar-to-the-original cover you've heard from her so far. It's just that the "original" is not what people usually think it is. She seems to be basing her arrangement here not on the original 1950s studio version by (songwriter and original perfromer) Screamin' Jay Hawkins, nor his early live performances from the 1950s and 1960s, nor on Nina Simone's cover of the song, nor any other later cover by other artists (including in the film _Hocus Pocus_ ). No, she seems to be basing her rendition on the way Hawkins was performing the song later in his life, specifically in the early 1990s. There is one particular TV appearance of his from that time that was actually already on YT when Angelina would have been considering how she wanted to cover the song. I think it's likely that she saw that very video, because the two musical arrangements are so similar (and we know she has always watched a lot of music on YT). Of course, all the crazy stuff she's doing vocally is at least "inspired by" if not actually copied from what he did. The main difference, IMO, is that she's making all the yelling and growling fit in better with the musical accompaniment - making it "more musical", as I like to say. In Hawkins' version, for example, there is one point at which the music literally stops so he can go off on one of his "screaming" jags. Anyway… you can see a nice comparison of the two approaches side-by-side in the video called "I Put a Spell on You - Angelina Jordan Reaction - Every Reaction Ever", by PO Talks (which uses a different live performance than the one I alluded to, but also one from c. 1990). Specifically, see the "end credits" portion of the video. Placing her performance "in context" like that makes her rendition even more impressive, IMO.
