Same with me. What I appreciate the most with Sam is that every performance is treated with the utmost respect and focusing on positives where those can be found. If things didn't work out great we get an explanation why and whether it really mattered to the overall performance or not. This gives hope to everyone who wants to sing. A voice teacher is supposed to be able to analyze how to improve a singer and inspire them to believe they can actually improve. Sam is an expert in just that. I would surely have picked a person like him if I wanted to learn how to sing. :)

This overly sliced and diced analysis annoys me. I don't have the musical expertise that Sam has, but I have tremendous sensitivity for music. I am a great barometer for que quality of a performance. I measure a performance like a barometer measures temperature and humidity. It is the way it hits me, the "goosebump factor" and that is through the roof with this girl. The temperature is 100 degrees celsius and the himidity is 100%. I never get it wrong in these contests, when I get the goosebumps the contestant either wins the competition or goes really far. Angelina is amazing. I look at the performance in the round rather than dissecting, and that, to my mind, is how you should appreciate a performance rather than nitpicking it.

She can sing clean, she can sing raspy, she can sing jazz, she can sing pop, she adjust to every song she sings. An Angelina tour on youtube is highly recommended to everyone who loves music.

Nice technical reaction. Every note and breath was designed by Angelina to give the American audience a glimpse of her talent, in a way that they could enjoy and follow her journey. She only had a couple of minutes to do this. It's not even the style that she usually sings, she never does these kinds of runs. American audiences love them. That's why she did them. Now... React to I Put A Spell On You - make sure it's the b/w version. It is mind blowing. She's only 9. Then do Norway's Got Talent - Gloomy Sunday - You will never be the same. She was only 7. Then sit back and enjoy over 100 songs that she has recorded. Oh...she can belt!!

She had just turned eight when she won Norway Got Talent, and she performed on stage in front of thousands of people at that age. Her voice and technique has evolved tremendously since then. She has gone from singing primarily jazz to singing a lot of styles (though the jazz colours her other styles as well), and mastered everything so far. Her family has kept her career at a low burn so far to give her an almost normal childhood. I have no worries whatsoever about her adopting while her vocals mature, just looking forward to it. Her foundation is so solid and her singing so natural. There are songs on KZread where she is touching the edges of her current ability, like the deep tones in 'A million years ago' or the belting in 'I have nothing', but those are still good performances. Her main quality is the emotions she pours into the songs, and I think her jazz/blues background is a big part of that (and yes, I do know that it sounds strange to talk about the musical background for a 14 years old girl)

Sam, thank you for your insightful reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. It is obvious that you are a true professional who understands the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. As a retired music educator and an old-school jazzer, I hold Ella Fitzgerald as the gold standard for embellishments, riffs, runs, whatever you want to call them. She would not only emulate the improvisation of the great instrumentalists of her day, she created her own style that set her apart from everyone else. She always stayed within the changes of the music and never did too much or too little, just the right amount. So many of today's singers do "vocal gymnastics" without really understanding the musicality that is required to be artistic. Through training and sheer innate ability, Angelina "gets it" and we, her audience, are immensely fortunate to listen to her artistry. I like to think of her as the Barbra Streisand of the 21st century. Not because their voices are alike, but because Angelina will be as much or more of a superstar as Barbra was in her prime.

She's been singing since she was three and she won NGT at 7 yrs old. He parents wouldn't let her sign with anyone so she did small shows and learned every vocal trick in the book. Quincy Jones loves her and asked her to sing at his birthday party when she was 12. She's played with countless excellent musicians she sang with orchestras she's done so much and she only just now within the last year signed a deal with the company and has started putting out singles as well as continuing to put out Jazz versions of basically every song you can think of this girl could take the theme song to Sesame Street arrange it into a jazz tune and make you cry she spent the next 6 years

Sam, your "style" is apparent and hopefully helpful to people who want to understand all the intricacies involved in creating a technical and inviting singing voice. And, you brought up several negative possibilities during Angelina's rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody which I believe were badly placed because you were listening to a flawless performance, one that could be described as a Masterpiece! Sam, do you assume that most viewers have already seen this and have been moved by her performance before your analysis? And finally, Sam, tell me if you replayed this performance by Angelina privately to fully enjoy what she created (she arranged the song). Most of us have shed a tear listening to her and the only question for all of us is what part of the song did you start welling up. No offense, Sam, but I'm just one of many millions of Angelina fans from around the globe who have "already" discovered her and think the world of her and like two reactors have commented: "Wow! I just got goose bumps going up and down my arms and I can't explain it!" Or, "She made me cry, she made me smile and I don't know, eh - it's her voice! It reaches into you and touches your heart!"

i don't know much about singing it might seem silly but they way she slightly cuts end of " never been born at all " to take a breath for the run up to the big note - 4:44 she does it so smoothly, one barely notices the breath she pulls in. she is so relaxed and comfortable. like a good magician the audience doesn't realize when a prep is being employed to help the performer get to the astonishing part.

Her style has clearly been influenced which is not a bad thing...her presentation of this work sounds remarkable. I think this is an honest review, he is reviewing from a teaching point of view and he was spot on if we look at Angelina and the direction she's headed today...she's finding her own sound. He clearly acknowledges that she is an amazing talent. And her vocal inflections today are like fine wine...just getting better and better.

This was Angelina's OWN arrangement of a song she knew Simon loved, with an acapella intro, which he also loves. Angelina's tone is from her jazz foundation, which won Norway's got Talent in 2014. She has signed with Republic, and has already sung for countless Children's Chariites, at Quincy Jones' 85th, The Nobel Prize concert, before 40,000 in Japan, invited by Alan Walker to his his two most popular songs at a concert in Norway.... Do some studying. You'll learn some things, I bet.

Very cogent analysis, it was clear to me even though I seldom think of voices in this manner. The best Voice Teacher Reaction I've seen. I've been loving Angelina, will be listening to her for the rest of my life. You spoke of jaw drop usefulness, shaping her mouth, etc. Have heard of this before and it always makes me think of Darci Lynn, the ventriloquist who sings. Would LOVE to hear someone knowledgeable comment on this puzzle - she sings with various characters/voices and sounds, and even belts it out. She's 12 here, self taught as a ventriloquist, so almost certainly self-taught as a singer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqlsrLFuZsndpJs.html You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman. Edit: added link.

@Sam Johnson I really needed to hear what you were talking about at the end. I grew up singing professionally and as I hit 40, I’ve been disappointed and struggling to “sound like myself” when I was 20. Knowing that I need to just relax and work with my current instrument is freeing. There’s still a little bit of grief associated with having to let go of how good I sounded back then, but I just want to move on and sound good with my current voice.

Hurrah, Sam finally found his way to Angelina Jordan. :) An excellent reaction from him, as always. Angelina has made covers since she was 5-6 years old so we have already heard a lot of positive development in her voice. She moved from Oslo to LA to get the best music education possible and we enjoy seeing her voice mature month by month. I have listened to Angelina do 100+ different songs and almost never heard her push her voice into an unhealthy place. So she must have a very good voice teacher. Angelina has an amazing diversity in her voice. I'm sure Rusty Shackleford will post in this thread a list of great performances by her. She has a great range from a very deep voice in covers like "Born To Die" to a lot of belting in "I Have Nothing". Granted, she is no Whitney Houston yet and can still improve her belting, but that will come when her body develops into a woman. She can sing very slowly in songs like "Wicked Game" and quite fast in songs like "I Will Survive". She can do super smooth melodic songs like "Song For A" and more rock type songs like "The Show Must Go On". One of her best performances ever was when she did "Feeling Good" when she was 10 years old. That was the first time I realized she was something more than just a great child prodigy. I agree with Sam that we have just begun to experience the greatness of her voice. She sounds amazing now and will improve year by year until she reaches her peak at 28+ years. I can't imagine how great she will sound then when she is so good now. I believe we are seeing a legend in the making right now with Angelina. It's so great we have the chance to follow her path to stardom from the humble beginning when she sang "I Who Have Nothing" when she was only 6 years old. I hope we will get more reaction videos from Sam to Angelina's performances. There are so many gems to pick from.

A small observation for those who want Sam to do another reaction video of Angelina. From checking into his channel you'll find he doesn't do a lot of repeat reactions to most artists. I only briefly when back to see, but I did find 2 artist where he did another reaction to Lizzo and Billie Eilish. Maybe his Patreon account will be the way. I don't expect another soon. But in saying that, I thought his reaction to Angelina was fantastic and is what you would expect from a true vocal teacher. Very detailed.
