In the NFL a team of analysts review every single game and every single call by a referee. And I can't remember the number, but if a ref is correct less than like 96% of the time ... they're sidelined. MLB should hold their umpires to such standards.
If you look closely in the Detroit/Hernandez Game it's in the 11th inning. Everyone knows Angel gets cranky after inning 7 and sleepy after the 10th it explains the call perfectly.

If you duck under a ball and it hits the bat it’s a strike. The hands are apart of the bat in the rule book. So even if he didn’t attempt to swing it’s a strike since it hit the bat(his hands) I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with him but he made a good call.
@Wolfeson28
Ай бұрын
@@Will34117 This is completely incorrect. The batter's hands explicitly DO NOT count as part of the bat. If a pitch hits the batter's hands, it's a HBP (unless they say he swung); if the pitch hits the bat first, it's a foul ball. That's the whole reason there was an issue with this call.

It can be called both a foul tip and a swing at the same time, happens all the time. So in his version of events, it was a foul tip that occurred during a swing, thus non-reviewable. If it was a foul tip during a non-swing, it would be reviewable. The weird part is him talking after the fact as if it hit the batter (which is the real thing that contradicts his foul tip call), but he could have just been talking hypothetically, I suppose.

why does mlb have one of the most challenging types of calls nonrenvwable. The first base umpire is about 90 feet away, and when it's a close call it can be really difficult to call. I don't blame the umpires for missed calls of this type sometimes, but rather the replay system and the inability to overturn a check swing call.

Exactly. Not like reviewing a foul call in basketball or pass interference in football. @acutting11

Because there's no exact definition for when a check swing becomes an actual swing, other than, "if the batter makes an attempt to swing." It's not if their wrists break, or if they cross the plate, it's very literally a judgement call that's open to interpretation.
I love Angel Hernandez, these are golden.
5:40. This one is a real head-scratcher, because there was literally no way for the umps to get the call correct. The correct call here is a dead-ball strike. Once the ball hits the player, it's a dead ball. The guy swung, so it's a dead ball strike. It doesn't matter if the ball was put into play. The ball is dead. But, it seems that there were only two paths: he either swung and the play is not reviewable (he's out) or he didn't swing and the play is reviewable (he's awarded 1B on HBP). Neither path gets you to the correct call. What a mess.
I LOVE that the dude ignored Angel and just walked to first.

I honestly think Mark Cuban would be a better Commisioner than Rob Manfred.
Angel Hernandez and baseball don’t mix. He should’ve been a politician.
Angel Hernandez may single-handedly make robot umps a thing and I'm all for it.
Shearly a check swing or not call shouldn't be reviewed but a lead ump in the field should always have the ability to Quantum Leap a call! Put right what once went wrong!
Angel Hernandez is pure entertainment. More videos of the great Angel Hernandez please.
I was watching highlights of bad Hernandez calls last night and then boom.. another one today brought to us by the great JomBoy. Gotta love it! Thank you sir
it's absolutely mind blowing that certain plays are reviewable and others are not. just, WHY?
To defend Angel, i know; I'm thinking when a batter is the act of swinging; stepping into, raising the hands etc. Like stepping into a pitch sitiutation. I think they fall in the same rule.
4:15 ... no comment on the guy in the background with cowboy hat and Skeeter glasses????
“If you swing and it hits you, it’s a strike” yeah thanks for the refresher Angel. I’m surprised you knew that
Guy in the back of The Rockies replay/review looking cool as hell.

The Richard Petty lookalike?
Jomboy the best
As someone who has been in 3 unions, (molders and melters, carpenters, food workers) and I support unions for the most part... but... I always come back to the problems with unions by using Angel Hernandez as a good example. Because most union workers will tell you there's definitely nepotism and favoritism in the union. And that's why guys like Angel Hernandez still have jobs, it's not what you know, it's who you know. If unions could crack down on this then I'd be full Gung ho on unions but I've been jaded by guys like Angel Hernandez the whole time I was there. Guys who weren't as productive but still getting better spots. So everytime you think unions are 100% good with no downside.... think about Angel Hernandez.
You think the other umps hate dealing with Angel too? Like the other ump has to argue with the coach because Angel thought it was a swing, even though no one else in the universe agrees. Like they're probably just standing there talking about Angel behind his back pretending to be talking about the call.
Angel Hernandez is truly the umpire of all time
I was telling someone about the time when Steve McMichael was singing the stretch at a Cubs game and he called out the umpire for a bad call in the inning before. This was like 20 years ago. That umpire was Angel Hernandez. He has been awful for way too long.
yo the fan at 4:23 is dripped out xD
EVERY PLAY SHOULD BE REVIEWABLE!!!!!
