Andy Street 'devastated' by defeat in West Midlands mayoral contest

Andy Street failed in a bid for a third term as West Midlands mayor by just 1,508 votes.
He lost to Labour's Richard Parker in yet another defeat for the Conservative Party following a disastrous performance in local and mayoral elections.
However, Mr Street refused to blame Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for the loss and said "tolerant conservatism" nearly won the day.

@@James-mb3jelol ever since David Cameron left, we've had Theresa May who was only one braincell more than Biden, she was utterly weak and wouldn't even debate JC. JC dominated in 2017 elections, an election no one expected labour to get any results in, so much so even though they lost people didn't see it as a bad thing. Then Boris, a stronger politician, but his lack of self control, with things like partygate and refusal to apologise for his racist comments (I mean why not just apologise) turned a lot of people away from the party, even though they agreed with his politics. Then Liz Truss, her reign was shorter than this sentence. And she messed up a lot economically. Then Rishi. Completely unlikable, too focused on migration and Ukraine and Israel when we have problems at home we need sorting, and he's so patronising being a billionaire then going on about £900 in our paycheck which probably not even 1% of lower earners will see. I actually miss David Cameron as PM

I really, really hate the Conservative Party, always have to be honest, but there are just a few conservatives out there, like Andy Street and Rory Stewart, that seem like actual decent, hard-working, kind folks that put the people first before political point scoring. Andy should consider running for leadership. He could really turn his party around and get rid of the filth that permeates it. The Conservative Party is supposed to be a socially liberal, economically centre-right party, not a culture war conspiratorial machine that focuses on punishing minorities for their own failures.

I did not vote for Andy Street because of his obsession for HS2, an obsession that ignored the fact that it's funding used money that would have been morally better spent on funding the failing NHS. There are people suffering with agony and despair at the failure to book appointments with their GP's and to get necessary urgent operations and that is totally shameful. I voted for the Reform Uk's candidate and will be voting for Reform Uk in the general election, because no other British political party is fit for purpose and their records speak for themselves !

I thought Andy Street was extremely restrained in his comments given the circumstances of his defeat. Everybody knows that the only reason he lost was because the Conservative brand has become toxic because of their antics at Westminster. He clearly knows this himself because he tried everything in the campaign to pretend that he wasn't really the Conservative candidate but was some sort of independent. He seems a decent enough bloke, so what on earth is he doing in the unbelievably ghastly Tory party?

No nonsense from Mr. Street. The Tories are so obviously not Street Wise at present and seem destined to rupture, if not split definitively, over hard right potentially neo fascist simplistic nonsense. Mr. Street might well be a reasonable candidate to lead a traditional conservative Party into some future election.
