Andrew Yang on "The Portal", Episode

Ойын-сауық

In this episode of the Portal, Eric checks in with his friend Andrew Yang to discuss the meteoric rise of his candidacy; one that represents an insurgency against a complacent political process that the media establishment doggedly tries to maintain. Andrew updates Eric on the state of his campaign and the status of the ideas the two had discussed as its foundation when it began. Eric presents Andrew with his new economic paradigm; moving from an 'is a [worker]' economy to a 'has a [worker]' economy. The two also discuss neurodiverse families as a neglected voting block, the still-strong but squelched-by-the-scientific-establishment STEM community in the US, and the need to talk fearlessly - and as a xenophile - about immigration as a wealth transfer gimmick.

  • @bernardlowe5433

    @bernardlowe5433

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@vagabondwastrel2361 This triggered me, so a wall of text incoming. I'm a fan of data, falsifiable and empiricism. Look up which countries are on the top on the world happiness index. But, to express my overall view of this... In game theory there's this concept of "the price of anarchy" and it measures how much the efficiency of a system degrades due to selfish behavior of its agents. Notably, you can give MORE freedom to agents and everyone can get less as the result. Braess's paradox is a nice example of that. You can put an extra (optional) road and paradoxically increase traffic jams, or abstractly, put an extra optional teleport and increase travel duration. In philosophy, there's a concept of "negative liberty" (freedom from) and "positive liberty" (freedom to). I see people constantly conflating them. Getting freedom from (some regulation) doesn't mean that you get freedom to (as in actual opportunities and a probable option to live a happier life). Even if we assume that all people are perfectly rational, still regulations, social policies, make perfect sense from the point of game theory. In the Braess's paradox you get an extra freedom to use an optional teleport, but you actually loose and get a worse system for everyone. The classic example is from the tragedy of the commons with a cow pasture. This is because Nash equilibrium is what is important. You can add freedoms in such a way that an optimal path for everyone changes and if everyone chooses that optimal path then everyone looses more than they gain. Best systems are those where incentives are perfectly calibrated. This is my abstract view of this. But, again, I would rather prefer to stay close to data and falsifiability. Because we can talk about economics or game theory all day long, but it's another matter entirely to prove that humans behave like those models. And then if we also in addition use abstract concepts like "fascism" or "socialism", then we are doomed, because those terms are so overused today that they mean everything and nothing. I'm not gonna fanboy over philosophy of science, but empiricism and falsifiability are two simple things to keep in mind to avoid meaningless discussions. We have the same brain that people in the past who discussed how angels and demons live. Now, we have our own political religions where we are capable of discussing things which have no relation to the real world, not because those political religions are wrong, but because they are too right; they are so abstract that they are always right. You can see socialism and fascism everywhere if you try hard enough. And this is a problem of being always right (if everything fits the model and every outcome doesn't contradict it). Because a model is only useful if it is capable of affecting a concrete outcome. For usefulness, you need both a concrete empirical goal and a model which would be incompatible with a set of concrete outcomes. This is how religion left healthcare, because once you have a concrete empirical goal, like "reduce the probability of cancer", then it quickly becomes obvious how useless it is. You can still be always right, but being always right is useless in that context. I hope that politics become like this some day. Invoking "left", "right", "socialist", "fascist" would be as frowned upon because it would be immediately obvious how useless thinking in those terms is, not particularly better than debating intricacies of the bible when you need to cure infection.

That their work is just as important as having a “job” -wants to deregulate agencies so they can improve innovations -wants to limit bureaucracy -his UBI is opt in which will greatly decrease inefficient welfare programs -does not want open borders and is for border security -UBI would help decrease abortions since women would have more money -Patriotic attitude (refers to himself as a patriot/American, refers to people as Americans, uses American flag emoji, welcomed trump supporters at his rally, unifying figure, also wears American flag scarf lol) -he is intelligent and respectable

    @@SpoonfulOfMenticide That's a very interesting viewpoint. However, in those two examples, that's not exactly the case. North Korea is far from united. In fact, they're very divided, the citizens of North Korea don't like their government, but they're forced to "like" their government by threat of death against them and their family. China is similar, but not to such an extreme as North Korea. The support of Andrew Yang is very very different from those two scenarios. This is people all agreeing what our common problem is, and wanting to voluntarily uniting against it. For the most part, humans aren't dumb, we're all here, and we all see the world that we're heading towards. We all see the problem, and only one candidate is talking about it honestly. @Annie Springer Not everyone that qualifies for welfare actually recieves it. People abuse the heck out of it, yes. Another problem are those who fake disabilities to get SSI checks. It is also claimed that many disability determination doctors are paid to ensure a real suffering disabled person gets denied to deter them from taking it to court. I hope whoever wins will address this matter. The benefits of the majority of those who need financial stability are worth the effort of passing UBI. There will always be people who shouldn't get help, but get it anyway. Just as our current system releases rapists and pedophiles from prison, there will always be injustice. The system will always be corrupt. Unless someone does something about it. I myself am an unpaid caregiver. For people in this kind of situation, it would help us, even reconstruct our work, improving our well being, giving us resources to better care for ourselves and loved ones. But for lazy people who refuse to work (there is a video of a woman who admits she never wants to work because she does not 'feel like it'...), UBI will at least feed them to an extent. If UBI passes, I do believe a new social structure will form, making people want to work harder to build and mobilize their social status; leaving those who are lazy under the classification of socially undesirable.

    I liked Yang right away when I heard an interview. So I listened to lots of videos with him in them and studied the freedom dividend plan. What I learned surprised me... One thing that surprised me is that I realized workers displaced by automation are worse off, and lose more buying power with a UBI system, than without. See if you agree... Under the current plan if you get displaced you can get a check by qualifying for gov't assistance, but the working person doesn't get the same thing. This helps bridge the gap in buying power. With UBI there's no bridge. For instance if 2 employees, Jim and Bob are making $2,000 a month and Bob loses his job because of automation, but Jim keeps his job, then Jim still earns $2,000 and the Bob earns $0. So Bob suddenly has $2000 less buying power than Jim. But Bob can go out and apply for assistance. He gets a check that bridges that gap. So now, Bob doesn't have $2000 less anymore. But if they both earn $2000 and both get a UBI, then they both make $3000. When Bob loses his job, then it's still $3000 for Jim and $1000 UBI for Bob, but nothing else. Bob has $2000 less buying power a month and there's nothing to bridge that gap between Jim and Bob's buying power in the UBI system. That means in the CURRENT SYSTEM the displaced worker actually has MORE BUYING POWER than with the UBI plan. According to UBI Center's independent review, the 4 new taxes proposed to pay for the UBI, does not generate more than $471 per mo, for each current adult citizen who would opt in (even with the saving from other programs) One of those taxes, the carbon tax would raise gas prices approx 50-55 cents a gallon and raise utility bills. The VAT, value added tax would raise the cost on most goods and services, (or it would generate even less per month.) [As more people turn 18 each year and millions more immigrants become eligible by becoming citizens, the need for more funds grows.] The Online Tax Guy also did an independent mathematical review on the plan. They found that it would take raising the value added tax to a broadbased 22% to get a monthly UBI of $750 per month (in addition to the other 3 proposed taxes and program saving). Housing costs would rise because there is no way supply for improved accommodations could meet demand if everyone has a UBI. So, rent or home prices would be higher Utilities would be higher (carbon tax) gas prices would be higher (carbon tax) Goods and services would be higher by at least 10%-22% (with possible exceptions of basic food and clothes, but exceptions decrease the amount brought to fund UBI) Anything where demand would rise more than supply could accommodate, would cost more. (cars, iPhones, vacation places, etc) Income taxes and payroll taxes would be higher because of this plan for some people depending on several factors that are shown in the UBI review. If you have capital gains it would be taxed as regular income so those taxes would also be higher. Because everyone gets the UBI, when you lose a job to automation you have lost more buying power than with the current system. This actually makes it harder for the displaced person to compete for better housing. The reviews I mentioned are online, they are 2 independent reviews of the plan. Both are mathematical and explain how they reached their outcomes. The automation problem is an important one to address and will need to be addressed, just because there is one plan proposed to address it, doesn't mean it's the only solution that can be designed. The plan also doesn't explain how it would fund Medicare for all nor college nor other added social programs. Unless the government has oil on the public lands, like Alaska, the govt only has one way to legally generate revenue for broadbased government programs including UBI, and that is taxation. It has no other authorized means for generating the revenue. So people who lose jobs to automation are worse off under the freedom dividend than the current situation. Everyone has higher taxes and pays more for housing, utilities, and gasoline and most everything else. Is it really a good plan? Could it even spark hyperinflation to hand all adults $1000 a month? It's messing with the economic balance a lot to place trillions of dollars of money into circulation in the economy very quickly. It's the real life example of "what would happen if we gave everyone money?" It creates "too much money, chasing too few goods" which equals inflation. (remember more than 1/2 of the $1000 freedom dividend has no source of funding by anything including taxes) So is this really a good plan?

    That's because Eric only speaks in vagueries. UBI is not some brand new concept, it's been debunked over and over again for decades by libertarian economists. Go see what Yaron Brooks, Tom Woods, Thomas Sowell or Robert Murphy have to say about this. Even as a ploy to replace welfare it has huge problems. What's original about this idea that "things have to change in washington"? That's EVERY POLITICIAN'S CAMPAIGN. And Eric's solution is every politicians's solution: Put me and my friends in charge.

    The best thing about him as a politician (personality-wise) is that he never tried to instil anger among his viewers / followers. Back in 2016 it seems as if hilary, bernie, and trump tried to use anger as a weapon. Yang is alarming us without any of the anger....concern, sure, but no hostility. He's also empathetic, a plus for any leader

    Already listened to this as a podcast, but the convo was so good, I'm going to listen to it again. Eric, you're one of my favorite folks. Hopefully you'll come around to a more complete agreement with Andrew's vision for UBI, as I think some of its shortcomings you identify may be correct, but may be intended to sidestep some of the political snags the policy is likely to encounter from both the left and the right. Interestingly, I have seen as much push-back to the Freedom Dividend from the left as I have on the right, though for different reasons. I wish Andrew would hammer home the idea that UBI isn't "free money" (the common complaint from the right) and more clearly describe the problems with today's welfare and other assistance programs, as the largest gripe from the far left is that the Yang UBI proposal doesn't do enough for people who really need help and may already have assistance. I've heard these answers in long-form interviews, but for the ears that only live in the world of soundbites, they don't have a digestible counter to these concerns.

    *We need Andrew Yang. He fucking gets it!!!* I recently discovered I had dyslexia and that my struggles in school were because of this. I cried my eyes out when I found this out because I've always defaulted to thinking I was just an idiot for doing poorly at school. I spent three times as much time studying compared to my classmates and achieved mediocre results. In the meantime, my classmates were busy playing beer pong and ramming their foreheads against things to impress women. I'm now a decent engineer and entrepreneur. I was lucky. It only makes me wonder how many students like me didn't make it through. We need a big picture education + hands on work + encouraging exploration + creativity + failure. Apparently 15% of the US population - 40% of self made millionaires - 35% of entrepreneurs - are all dyslexic.
