Have you tried Harold Edwards’ book Galois theory. It’s a non standard approach to introduce abstract algebra you might like.

The argument is about the a0 being smaller than a and b0 being smaller than b. As these are whole positive numbers, we cannot keep finding such smaller pairs of numbers because there is only a finite amount of smaller whole numbers than a given number. Hope this helps.

Could you give an example?

I was already on this out of high school. Little did I know that what I had done was the basis for elliptical curves which we worked on in 1974. It seemed intuitively simple, one of my profs tried to trick the class on an exam. The question was whether two rational numbers (Q) raised to an nth power greater than 2 would equal 1. My answer to that intuitively on the exam was its impossible. When I got my paper back, he had written "Why?"

I wonder what happened to Fermat's original proof? Intuitively it at first seems that there should be a solution. Then it seems that there probably isn't, but how it could be proved is way beyond me.

Most likely answer is that any proof he produced was actually wrong or in some way or another logically flawed (possibly unawarely including the theorem within the proofs hypothesis). As far as we understand he probably thought he had a proof that in the end was wrong anyway because the techniques for solving this sort of problem just hadn’t been developed and the logical rigour just wasn’t on par with how we form mathematical proofs today. Over the years there have been several flawed proofs of FLT, including Euler's original proof for n=3 and Lamé's general proof. Both of these use methods of factorisation in rings such as Z[sqrt(-3)] and Z[e^(2pi*i/n)]. They failed on the same point - there are multiple ways to factorise a single number into irreducible elements in these rings [e.g. 2x2=4=(1+sqrt(-3))(1-sqrt(-3))] which was a fact they hadn't accounted for. It is entirely possible Fermat used these methods and made the same mistake.

If you rework Diphantos, you too may have the insights that Fermat had.

Guys, I'd like to know your opinion of my :p ersonally thought I think FERMAT's theorem is wrong because x^3 +y^3= z^3. This can be demonstrated by obtaining z by adding the sum of x^3 +y^3 all raised to the cubic root, obtained z is raised to the cube, the result must be rounded down to the unit.

It is suspected that he didnt't since all the math used in the current proof of the theorem is far complex and it required years of development than the one that was available in Fermat's era. It remains a mystery but it is possible that Fermat were wrong about his own proof.

I somewhat agree. Mathematicians are entirely capable of explaining their work to the layman, but they choose to use specialised symbols and language to “stay ahead of the curve” so to speak. Academic language is well known to be invented as a secret code of sorts. If you speak the language you are in the club. But also these are working people whose profession it is to discover new mathematics. To be at the top of the field takes incredible effort and none of that can be spent attempting the equally hard job of explaining really very deep ideas to complete beginners. It’s like asking Usain Bolt to help us sprint 100m in under 10 seconds, while also training for the Olympics to win gold. An impossible task. This is why I think it takes time for these ideas to trickle down into more general education. As these mathematical professors age, they no longer need to be at the top of their game and can spend more time helping others understand new ideas. I’m sure in time Wiles’ proof will be made fully transparent, but for now the people that understand all the nuances are still in their prime and working hard.

Its easy to find examples by eye! Simply notice that a whole number solution to x^n+y^n=z^n corresponds to a rational solution of a^n + b^n = 1 (where a=x/z and b=y/z). Thus plot the curve x^n + y^n = 1 on a graphing calculator and eyeball nearby points that are rational. Use this to get a close call to FLT.

And here lies the problem . One needs alternative proofs .Specially with more palatable and universal mathematical methods .Or a very large number of special cases being proved with more less standard mathematical methods . For an alternative proof of FLT KZread Will Rhee or George Ice and you will find FERMATs PROOF of FLT which takes only two pages.Sorry,your knowledge of that mathematics shown in your comment you do not need. Go back and look over to remember Vieta algebra and binomial coefficients formulas. If you reply and find a mistake please be specific and point out the line of the proof which is not correct and why. I know that you will be disturbed and frustrated by the simplicity of the proof but be cool and do not throw objects around yelling WTF.

Supercomputers can find counterexamples if they exist within the accessible range. I don't know what the answer is if we may use a really advanced artifical intelligence approach of the future. But such proof would certainly not be very satisfying for the humans, we couldn't follow the proof.

That is the problem. Nobody is going to take time to familiarize you with why step 29 to step 30 is such a big leap.

The approach I took was was graphically. If you draw the graph of a circle with center (0.0) , you see the case n=2
