Andrew Callaghan NPR Interview for This Place Rules at WBUR Boston
1/15/22 second update: @andrewcallaghan7333 has posted a new video ( • In Response ) relating to recent news. Thank you Andrew for finally addressing the allegations, and outlining steps to work on yourself. Please take the opportunity to set an example for how to improve going forwards.
1/15/22 update: Reiterating what I wrote in my pinned comment and said in my followup video ( • Introducing myself aft... ), I strongly encourage Andrew and @Channel5KZread to take the allegations seriously, apologize for wrongdoing, work to chart a better course forwards that ensures this sort of thing does not happen again, and also allow a variety of different budding journalists to take turns getting more chances with interviewing and leadership roles at @Channel5KZread .
1/10/22 update: I have added a pinned comment discussing the emerging allegations that I learned about after filming and posting this video.
I put together videos I recorded with Andrew Callaghan of @Channel5KZread fielding questions in a sometimes heated interview with Robin Young at WBUR Boston, after a screening of his documentary This Place Rules, about divisive media and politics leading up to the 2020 election and Jan 6.

Andrew is very clear about his influences and methods. He's doing Gonzo Journalism. Similar to how Hunter S. Thompson did things, but necessarily updated for the modern world. A lot of that is exactly what he said in the first 2 minutes of this video: "I only film people who were already exploiting themselves". Gonzo Journalism involves basically just "vibing" with your subject. You don't need to agree with them, you just need to shut up and go for the ride. And that brings a level of access and genuine revelation with the interview subject that, as you point out, this lady will never achieve trying to invite Jones or anyone else into a studio to do a formal interview. Andrew is like a cross between Louis Theroux and Hunter s. Thompson. Watch what he does when interviewing people...he just follows them around and shuts up. He'll ask a question here and there but he's mostly just shooting the shit with them and knows that the people he's interviewing cannot abide silence so they'll keep talking without much prompting.

I'm an almost 65-year-old former journalist turned copywriter. I loved Abbie Hoffman and Hunter Thompson as well as Edward R Murrow. I feel that Andrew is continuing their tradition of speaking truth to power, but in a way that doesn't condescend to people he disagrees with. I think he calls his interview approach "radical listening," and it's a perfect way to handle the inchoate babble on both sides. I think the point was that part of being large is having accountability. Its like tax fraud where you can't nail every small, transient actor, so they can largely get away with being dishonest. But if a large company (that actually has money behind it) that can't simply rename or disappear makes that mistake, it's a totally different story. So you would expect "mainstream" to have to tell the truth because of liabilities. Unfortunately this doesn't actually play out because fox is mostly punditry (as Andrew points out), and they aren't held to the same standards of truth telling. If you read her as "how is that mainstream news reporting", I think it's less crazy sounding.

Indeed. While I’m old enough to appreciate a little “decorum” in public discourse, too often the notion gets used by the center left as an excuse to bury their heads in the sand and blame everyone but themselves for the foothold the Alex Jone’s of the world got on their watch. It’s almost as if ‘decorum’ itself has become the center left’s dog whistle for shutting down (by shaming) anyone who’s lens or questions point at uncomfortable truths.

This is awesome to watch in light of NPR whistleblower Uri Berliner's article.
I’m here after watching his interview with Lex Fridman. This was after his press tour was canceled after what he said on cnn. This was the only interview he that wasn’t canceled. He was going to appear on all the major late night shows, all of those went away when he dared to actually be a little critical of the media. This is why nothing changes, people don’t usually rock the boat and go along with the agenda and don’t step out of line. I respect his courage. This was also around the time the sexual misconduct stuff came out of nowhere, kind of makes you think
It’s a fear of mine that I will wake up one day, an older man, grown out of touch with what the current generation is experiencing. to forget to keep learning by reduction-breaking down my hard built worldview to learn something from someone with fresh eyes. if you do not surrender, and try to see, you will be blind-doomed to repeat past mistakes of refusing to evolve in the process. I appreciate how some other interviewers have taken turns picking up the microphone in some of Channel 5’s more recent content this past year, and I hope this trend continues with fresh faces taking up the mantle of journalism and helping to carry Channel 5 forward. I may edit this or post a new pinned comment as information involves.

Thanks for uploading! Dang i used to think Robin Young was alright, jeez. Thanks for posting! Andrew's the man
This is man who watched early Louis Theroux and learned how to get conversation going instead of useless arguments
It's great to see Robin open up more towards the end when they discuss Hunter Thompson. You can see that sort of mainstream glaze crack and her journalist/talkshow passion come out.

Have you heard the news?
Hunter S. Thompson rode with the Hell’s Angels for a year as an honorary member in order to research his novel of the same name. He did this because, in order to accurately report upon a phenomena, you have to listen. You have to understand before you diagnose. It was this style of Gonzo journalism that allowed him to accurately and effectively explore *what* perpetuates the anti-establishment rhetoric of these outlaws. People don’t wake up and decide to become a criminal, or a conspiracy theorist, or what have you. Various societal influences have a direct impact on what fuels these people and forces them into their own communities. Becoming a Q Anon conspiracy theorist isn’t that cause, it’s a *symptom* - the cause is rooted firmly in undiagnosed mental health problems, laughably ineffective adult media literacy, and a battalion of news outlets whose sole purpose is to manipulate these gullible, mentally ill people into believing what they’re selling. You can’t just speak. You have to listen. And that’s what Channel 5 successfully does. And it’s only when you listen that you can correctly find the root of the problem and begin to solve it.
this really wasnt all that egregious. she asked him the obligatory MSM brained questions, which threw the vibe off early on, but kept it moving. tbh their hunter breakthrough was cute and im glad they ended on a positive note

The way I saw it, she was a fan honestly. I think what Andrew does is culturally and morally complex, especially in this era. Undoubtedly some of the questions did come off as pointed but I don't think that was a lack of respect for Andrew it was her trying to get to the core of what makes what he does tick. You even saw how she pulled back the interview immediately after Andrew points out that the question is accusatory she tells him straight up that it is, but she respects him enough to believe he'll be able to represent himself. Even before that she talks about the Don Lemon interview where he was asked similar questions and wasn't given any of the engagement he was given here. They might have gotten off on the wrong foot but I do not think she's some out of touch old woman like streamers and comments are making her out to be.

@justingreen575 The one at 5:00, she misunderstood Andrew's point about mainstream media, she was saying how can Fox news be mainstream is they lie, failing to see how fox news is mainstream (popular) in part due to lying and radicalising their viewers, which is what the movie is all about. I think she still carries old hat views mainstream=credible, not the modern understanding mainstream=popular (regardless of veracity of news). You'd think someone living in a capitalist system and industry would understand that distinction, and it's very telling she doesn't, especially as it pertains to the 24 hr modern news cycle.

It's just so damn relieving every time he answers rough questions honestly, and without diverting. It makes everyone who doesn't speak honestly look so silly.
Andrew handled this like a boss. This woman makes the left look exactly how conservatives imagine all liberals. I hope Andrew can remain fully independent while being successful, because there's obviously a lot of higher-ups who want to maintain their monopoly on journalism and keep the status quo stationary.
"You don't correct them in real time" Yes, because Andrew doesn't pretend to he the arbiter of truth like MSM.
Neolibs: we need to focus on actual journalism and get honest interviews out of radicalized right wingers andrew: *does that without being overly shitty to the interview subjects* Neolibs: NOOOOO NOT LIKE THAT
This was an incredible interview. Sorry to Andrew because he looked really uncomfortable with some of the questions. I think that her pressing him the way she did gave him room to shine, because we would never have heard his incredible rebuttals, without her pressure. In the end, I think that we can give a little bit more credit to the veteran journalist, for asking the hard questions, and when Andrew had the right answer, crediting him for putting it to bed. Then joking like old pals at the end, her essentially admiring his journalistic style, placing him next to Hunter S Thompson. Amazing
