Anders Breivik trial: accused cries, but any remorse?

At the opening day of the trial of Norwegian Anders Breivik, accused of killing 77 people in a mass murdering shooting spree, the court sees he shows no emotion - aside from when an anti-immigration video is aired.

    @Kosherbro He's part of the problem. Self-fulfilling prophecy. The Bible says to bless those who curse you, and love those who hate you. Commiting mass murder rights nothing. Not that evil was even commited against him, but the Bible says not to repay evil with evil, but rather with good. Speaking through the barrel of a gun is not dialogue, nor allows the other a response.

    Norway treats its prisoners humanely, some would say too humanely, but it also has a very low crime rate, so it must be doing things right. To change the way prisoners are treated in Norway would hand a victory to the killer, as a survivor of the massacre said. This tragedy was a very rare event, if not a one-off for Norway, whereas in the US, these horrific events, like the Las Vegas, Orlando, Virginia University, Sandy Hook School, Columbine, Aurora, Dayton, San Berninindo, EL Paso and many other shootings like them occur on a very regular basis indeed.

  • @MetalPhantom7

    @MetalPhantom7

    It really isn't doing things right, you just mention blank "low crime rate" and that's it. How about we go a little further in details? Let's compare Norway with 301k crimes in 2020 and 5million total population and Japan with 759k crimes in 2020 and 127 million population. So which one actually has lower crime rate? Japan that is 25x times larger and has death penalty and literally sentenced their own Breivik (Satoshi Uematsu) to death or Norway which treats Breivik like he's in a resort? Regarding US - they have their precious second ammendment and free access to guns to everyone, that's why it's rare in Norway but commonplace in US. Oh and again, Japan has the most strict gun policy in the world.

  • @MetalPhantom7

    Crime rate by country 2021 - Norway (prisons are resorts and no death sentence) 34.62; Japan (harsh prisons and death sentence exists) 21.67 25x times population difference between 2 countries, I think it says it all

    @@MetalPhantom7 You really can't make comparisons across cultures in this way. A crime in Norway is not the same as a crime in Japan, Russia, USA, etc. For example, Japan has a 99% conviction rate. This means cases are very often cleared before they appear before a judge. This is just one of many examples of how one cannot simply compare conviction rates from two separate countries and draw any sort of meaningful conclusion. It seems it is a very deep and complex topic, of which many books have been written which I have not read.

    Not that this is any excuse but his Wikipedia page goes into great lengths about his highly disturbing childhood. Even psychiatrists and psychologists wanted him put into foster care. I know the vast majority of people with bad childhoods don't do what he did but can we really expect that absolutely no-one will do what he did with that kind of upbringing? Statistically, if you ignore the plights of every child in a highly disfunctional family, aren't you one day setting yourself up for something like this? Someone will eventually arise who sees this type of thing (what Breivik did) as a kind of redemption for the society that allowed him to be raised by such bad people, a sort of "evening of the score". It's just statistically inevitable.

Thankfully, he was unable to carry out a mass shooting. If successful, that would've been two mass shootings in Norway in less than a decade. I think that's cause for concern. Oh, there was the guy who ran around shooting arrows at people a few months ago, but he wasn't on Breivik's side. In fact, the police said that it looks more like the problem was mental illness than anything. With the recent parole hearing... I've thought about this a lot, but how many other Breiviks are there? @@CunnyRape a) It's not a life sentence. It's an undetermined one, meaning that he could be released at any point after ten years, as long as he has been rehabiliated. It could be a life sentence... but it could also be thirty years. Because of how extreme his actions were, I imagine no one wants to sign off on his release. However, other people with the same sentence can end up serving a decade. Usually, prisoners who get that sentence will be released once they've been rehabilitated, so I think, for the majority, they might as well just prepare for their eventual release. Breivik isn't most people though, so he should probably get comfortable. b) Not every prison is Halden. Of course, when you google, that's what you'll see... but that's like the highest possible standard. Just yesterday, I watched a tour of a prison where the conditions were quite bad. They had to keep the prisoners locked in their cells most of the time, because there was too little space, so it would've been a safety issue to let them out. They have these small cages that they can stand in for an hour if they want to be outside, but it's so depressing that no one wants to. Some prisoners can go out in outside area without the cages, but that area is more like a small, grey alley. I also read an article a year or two ago, where they showed how bad it was inside a women's prison. I don't remember exactly how it was, other than that they had to cramp several people into each cell, and they weren't huge cells either. Generally speaking, the standard is good, and the effectiveness overall is superb (we have the best rehabilitation results in the entire world!). However, not every prison is like Halden. There are some pretty bad ones out there. I remember another documentary were the inmate talked about his issues, and how, instead of getting help, he was locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours every single day, and then he'd be allowed to go outside where he had a very small area to walk back and forth in, alone, for an hour. That was his prison life.

You may have your own thoughts on his rehabilitation, but you also probably have never spoken to him, and most likely, you also don't have the qualifications to evaluate prisoners and determine their mental state. That said, as far as the murder goes... The evidence wasn't exactly foolproof. I have no idea whether he actually killed someone, but he shouldn't have been charged with murder. They didn't find anything that could remove all reasonable doubt. Enough to make him a person of interest, but not enough to charge with murder and sentence to two decades. All they found were evidence that said "it's possible...", But they never found any of those "oh yeah, this is the guy". How can you charge someone with a crime based on "this MIGHT be the person... 🤷‍♀️"?!

    Maximum punishment in Norway, BUT they can always hand him another 21 years, which they most likely will. Breivik will never be set lose again, cause he would without any doubt go and kill again, possibly even in the hope that he would be shot this time...he was ready/willing to die that day, although not by his own hand. In my honest opinion though the ONLY fitting punishment would be to have these kind of people locked in pitch black room for the rest of their lives, but Breivik gets to spend the rest of his days in prison cell like this: www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/02/norway-rejects-anders-breivik-inhuman-prison-conditions-claim

    How could someone ever imagine that a rich country, like Norway is, could keep its citizens' high standard of living, without bringing foreign people, from poor countries (like many Muslim countries actually are), to do the bottom work. Muslims, like any other foreign people, come to Norway to fill the job openings, and to work hard, they are not coming to rule the country.

    Are you implying that everyone in Norway gets a high education and there would be no working class without immigrants? Sorry but that makes no sense whatsoever. They have managed wonderfully the whole time without them. If anything, they would take jobs from ethnic Norwegians by accepting a lower wage. In truth though, statistics show that they mostly migrate to scandinavia to live off of welfare.. Not to work. If you lived around here you'd probably know this, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
