And the Oscar Goes to...All About Eve

Фильм және анимация

"All About Eve" tells the tale of an aging theater actress who fears a young woman, who idolizes her, is only using her to form her own stage career. How does this classic story written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz hold up? Did it deserve its record breaking 14 Oscar nominations? Watch my review and find out.

The reason why Addison DeWitt actually ends up being lovable is that he never beats up on someone who can't take it. He cuts despicable folks down to size. He becomes heroic.

I had watched this film many times over the years. And I just love the screenplay, the dialogue, the actors and their give and take. I also saw this onstage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA.

….I know why I like Sander’s DeWitte character so much : Even though his cynicism is extreme, and his take on human nature less than charitable, he is well-acquainted with his flaws-and openly acknowledges them…. It’s this disarming honesty regarding himself that draws one in-that, and the fact that he injected a certain pathos into his portrayal of DeWitte; one senses past pain behind the cynical facade, and a fear of being vulnerable…. It was a spectacular & disarming performance from an actor who was deemed competent-but who hadn’t been placed on the “Watch this Actor” list by the Academy, prior to Eve. This performance really showcased Sander’s ability….

It's also always fun to see a horrible person take down a worse person. Eve comes up against someone who's way to smart for her lies.

I love the way Addison Dewitt takes Eve out of her lies and drags her through the muck. "Why I should want you now strikes me as (something) absurdity". Why did he want her? He says they're both the same or something like that. George Sanders was a completely underrated actor, imo. I've seen him in other movies and he's just as good as in this movie. Check him out in "Rebecca" and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". Although "Rebecca" is another favorite. He was so good at being the smarmy know it all, completely superior to everyone else.

There are no flaws in this movie at all, except for Thelma Ritter's Birdie disappearing without explanation. And the movie is so well done, that I wonder if there really IS a reason and it's flying over my head somehow? Everything else is utter perfection. Bette Davis's performance is sublime - I like it even better than Dark Victory. And George Sanders as Addison DeWitt is the epitome of inspired casting. I can watch this movie again and again, it never gets old. I wish movies still aimed so high. For the most part, we're expected to be dazzled by CGI and drawn in by feigned sex these days, and it comes at the expense of plot, dialogue, and script. Contemporary films can't touch this one.

Birdie rang the alarm bells about Eve in the first two scenes of the movie. By the time Margo caught on, Birdie's job was done.

Birdie is there for Bill's birthday party. She tries unsuccessfully to get Margo to sober up a little. She also has that great line in Margo's bedroom when she looks at all of the furs and says it looks like a dead animal. Love it!! Thelma Ritter was one of the best character actresses in history.

There is actually a reason I think for Birdie’s disappearance. Margo was struggling with fading as she aged, Birdie was that. It was implied she was an actress when she was younger, but as she got older the spotlight faded. Birdie’s disappearance represents older actresses disappearing away from the spot light to make way for younger actresses.

*At the **6:34** mark, I'll point out a little known detail that was brilliant on a subconscious level... The scene shown is right after the big reveal in the Ladies' Room that Eve IS a scheming backstabber..., and as she walks out in that black dress..., with a collar shape reminiscent of bat wings..., the restaurant's band just happens to be playing the classic standard, **_"That Old Black Magic"._** And while they play it slow and instrumentally, the unsung 1st verse lyrics are, **_"That old black magic has me in its spell... That old black magic that you weave so well..."_*

Hey there! I'm an aspiring cartoonist and a fellow film buff from India. I've just finished watching all your Oscar reviews so far (from Wings to this one) in a marathon and it was SO SO AWESOME, as though I was watching a TV series!!!!! It felt like I was moving through time and history! I REALLY REALLY can't get enough of these, and I only wish you increased the frequency of your videos (who am I kidding, I take two weeks to make a one page cartoon- I am a goddamn control freak!). I really can't wait to hear of what you think about Best Picture winners such as The Bridge On The River Kwai, Lawrence Of Arabia, In The Heat Of The Night, The Godfather Part 2, Gandhi (my all time favourite!) and Amadeus. About myself, I haven't had a single thing published yet, and I am working on a graphic novel which details my struggles as a law student/misfit. I see it as a character piece, and movies (not comic books!) like The Kid, All Quiet On The Western Front and Taxi Driver have influenced me a great deal when it comes to the shaping of narratives and characters. Music too has influenced me a great deal, and the graphic novel I'm working on is my "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" album, in the sense, that I'm trying to expose my feelings in a raw fashion, in a way that I've never exposed before. Your review of All Quiet On The Western Front has influenced me to take up a challenge while drawing the novel- to show more and tell less, as comics like films are a visual art form. I thank you wholeheartedly for educating me the pros and cons of these "Best Pictures", as you have given me a sense of what to do and not to do in my graphic novels and cartoons. You do seem like a tough guy to impress, but it is guys like you who keep us artists on our toes and provoke us to do better! I hope I complete my novel in the shortest possible time, and it would be a privilege to have you review it....Only please do go easy on me! I hope we keep in touch and discuss about the forthcoming Best Picture winners to come once you review it. You've got yourself a fan! Keep up the great work, and do increase the frequency of your videos...Just can't wait for them!

Thank you so much for all the kind words. You're really sweet. I'm glad you enjoyed all the videos. That you felt they took you through history means a lot to me, because one of my aims is to take people on mini-journey through film history with each of these videos. That I appear to be successful with at least one person is a big, happy deal for me. As always, I am working on getting reviews out quicker. I have gotten to the point where I can do the average Oscar video in about a week (barring real life stuff and problems that may arise). My new goal is to get two Oscar videos and one podcast video out a month. If I can get more done, great. Real life stuff (just got a new house) and, honestly, laziness and procrastination has gotten in the way of that. But starting in May, I'm going to get back on course. So look forward to that. One of the films I've been looking forward to the most is Bridge on the River Kwai. It's a film I've been wanting to see for a VERY long time but have never been able to for one reason or another. Amadeus is even higher on my must see list (though, I have seen it performed on stage). You're work sounds really interesting. I dig character driven comics. So best of luck with your work. I'm excited to see your work put out there some day. Just keep working at it. By the way, I'm glad my critiques have been useful to you in your own work. And, haha, I don't think of myself as a tough guy to please, but maybe I am. Haha. I don't have any current plans to review any non-film related books, but when your finished with your graphic novel, I would love to read it and give you some feedback in a informal capacity, if that's alright. Thank you for being so nice. I am truly blessed to have a fan like you. Cheers!

This is nitpicking, but Celeste Holm delivers a line in Margo's apartment. "I guess I'm what the French would call de trop." Except she says "de trawp" rather than the proper way a Radcliffe educated woman would say it who most definitely would have studied French.
