And Eve Was Weak (Broadway Soundboard)

Stunning song from the ill-fated Carrie the Musical. This is video of the Stratford production featuring Barbara Cook as Margaret White dubbed with a soundboard recording from the Broadway production featuring an amazing Betty Buckley. The video has an edit where footage of Betty is available. Linzi Hateley plays Carrie in both productions.

I think the cellar door on the floor makes thing a lot more terryifing. The off-Broadway Revival last year had a closet like the one in the movie/book... it just isn't the same.
this musical feels like two completely different scores. a chilling Gothic musical with what they give Margaret, and a pop-ish musical with the high school story line (not surprised, same composers as Footloose). the Margaret material was the best part of the show.

I think that’s kinda cool, though. It really shows how different the White family is from the general public. It serves as a really good contrast.
it's because of women like this...that I love musical theatre.
I actually love this song. More for the acting if anything... The way she sang, "I thought I was dying, I started crying." Always gets me.
Betty's voice is BEYOND incredible in this song.
God... just the pure... energy and fanaticism in this song is amazing. The LIFE that this actress (I'm sorry, I've forgot her name) brings to the role is stunning. This is on the level of "Hellfire" from Notre Dame (the Disney film of course) in terms of power and emotion and that was a song that quite literally sends shivers down my spine even now.

What a fantastic vocal. Horror musicals are tricky to pull off and at least in this moment it worked beautifully. This is terrifying in the best way possible.

that's why the revival and subsequent productions disappoint me.this show is lost without a great orchestra
The Broadway production was not perfect, but it had something that I often miss in the newer productions of Carrie - a big classic orchestra. Seriously, the orchestra makes the music sound more epic (and scary at Margaret's parts) than in the revival, it sounds great!!

I just now noticed the part of the scene where Carrie has her arms outstretched and her mother keeps pushing her away. It may just be that she's trying to keep her at arm's length, but it really looks more like Carrie is trying to hug her mother and is looking for comfort.

It was not the Producers fault for the horrible sets and costumes, it was The Director who was from England, and had no idea what the producers meant when they and the writers and composer told him think Grease, meets weeny todd, and he took Grease to mean Greece as a greek tragedy. its all on the Director for the look and the costumes of the original show. Yes i agree with some of the directing, but he should have let the producers explain what they meant when they told him Grease not Greece, the white set and the costumes were horrible, and they should have looked like high school kids not like MTV dancers or wearing Greek togas, in the 1980's. its the Directors decision and he from what i understand of the making of it was horrible to work with and focused on the wrong parts of the show.

I wish Betty Buckley could have reprised her role as Margaret White in the revivial. I saw the original and I still remember her performance 24 years later. I saw the new production last weekend. Marin Mazzie was ok, not crazed enough and her voice lacked the power required.

I'm not a Broadway fan at all, but this is really a remarkable song. I've seen other parts of the musical that looked terrible though. I think it is the right time for a new version of the musical -- if they take out the cheesy numbers and have more powerful songs like this one, and with talented performers on the level of Betty Buckley. Wouldn't it be amazing if they took one of the most notorious "flops" in Broadway history and turned it into one of the most successful?

I guess it's just a difference in opnion, I suppose. I just found it rather odd considering how this song really blew me away the first time I saw it. And I enjoyed most of the lyrics, although I agree to some point that half of it seemed like they were just writing filler.
as much as the director fucked up this show and fucked over Linzi, you must admit that these women bring these characters to life so well. Linzi sounded legit terrified. (Fair though, because on opening night the woman who originally played Margaret almost got beheaded during evening prayers.)

@gejo1251 Marin Mazzie did a GREAT job. She has her own take on it and her voice is different from Betty's. She did a phenomenal job. Don't judge her unless you've actually SEEN what she does in person. The audio on YT doesn't do Marin's Mrs. White justice.
Buckley. No other. Saw this in premiere before it closed in NY original cast. The audience all but rioted. To see a B'way show close with an angered audience was scarier than the premise of the show. Bringing in the likes of Debbie Allen ruined this show: the choreography, the lighting, the prom scene was a joke but Buckley and Hately were amazing -- they should have done it in chamber setting .
@ive8er i agree. what would solve it is if she didnt open with it, but waited to see if it would work and then hopped on to blow everyone out of the water
@TheBwayBoy Stephanie in anything would be amazing. I wish she was in more!!! the recording i have of her i love. she might be a little young though, in my mind.
That blocking was just terrible. I don't think the real problem here was with the music (I can't speak to the book), but the direction. It's just way too showy and grandiose. Carrie should be small an intimate, slowly building the pressure until you find yourself personally involved in the slaughter.
@jb7644
