THE SEED SHIP: An advanced spacecraft developed by the Ancients, which manufacturers and deposits Stargates on planets ahead of the Ancient deep-space exploratory vessel Destiny. An undetermined number of the seed ships were presumably deployed from the Milky Way Galaxy millions of years ago, months or even years ahead of Destiny’s launch - pursuing the secrets of the origins of the universe.

@@erikleorga Exactly the reason most don't like it, the premise was a great idea and had so much potential but there were episodes where it was just people arguing and going against each other, and oh there might have been a gate shown I think, in some episodes!! It needed a carter and a Mckay on board pulling that thing to bits, figuring it out and showing awesome stuff, whilst at the same time visiting worlds, getting supplies etc... and perhaps meeting some new races. It got boring so quick I think I got half way through season 1, and I have tried to rewatch it a couple of times and just can't!!! Plus the seething anger they cancelled Atlantis which was getting fantastic for it, still annoys me today.

@@erikleorga I don't understand this whole "soap opera" rubbish. Every single stargate series has "soap opera" characteristics. It's the fact there wasnt an established team, the introduction of a younger cast over all and a change in tone that a lot of established fans couldn't handle. SGU was from the first season my fav stargate BECAUSE of that. It was a brilliant continuation of all of what stargate was about, while moving it on in all areas. Not only did you have the gate - leading to different planets, but a ship going to different galaxies, with different gates leading to different planets. A crew, never ment to be where they are, never worked as a team, all with their own baggage before it all happened. But I'm sure fans like you just wanted all of that dropped for some romping fun adventures. Yyaaayyyy. Stargate universe and its demise is a product of what happens to all franchises. A certain set of custodial fans take it upon themselves to decide what stargate is, and was - over those that actually created the franchise. And killed it.

I mean if you think about it, even the Goa'uld were pretty alien looking in their true form. They just got around using alien puppets or CGI characters by having them take human hosts. And the other main alien race we encounter (that isnt just relocated humans) are the Asgard who have the traditional grey alien look. Jaffa are mutated humans so they look mostly human still. Really the only species guilty of the "looks weirdly like humans but arent" thing is the Nox.

  • @Cheesusful

I liked it too until I realised that due to the cost of the CGI we never got more than about 30 seconds worth of them on screen and were never able to have a single conversation with the crew, opting instead for massive info dumps from existing characters who were the designated exposition character for the week

my theory has always been that the seed ships and the destiny all originally had many robots onboard each ship, all meant for their individual tasks, but through out the many millennia these robots were either destroyed by the races that made it their ultimate goal to destroy or capture anything related to the seed ships or the destiny, effectively making it so the ships were in bad repair. we found one robot on destiny that was broken, we eventually fixed the bot and used it to fix things on the ship, but it only makes sense that these ships were originally sent out with automated bots meant for gathering resources meant to repair the ships as well for the seed ships to create more gates. my theory is that the destiny would have been in much better shape if these robots were still onboard the ship. yes the ship is old AF but, so long as something is properly maintained, it could essentially last forever. but if the bots were destroyed or damaged beyond repair, it would make sense that the ship would be in such bad shape.

It would have been a fairly simple matter to scoop elements out of a star while flying through it to refuel, and to use these to build the gates. Stars are pretty rich in metals, and in elements that can be transmuted *into* other metals. So that much is pretty easy. Destiny just has a fuel tank, the seed ships had a fuel tank *and* a resources tank.

@@asvarien Bearing in mind that not a thing about Naquadah makes a lick of sense (IIRC, in one episode it's said to be like a kind of transuranic version of Quartz, but I may be misremembering that, and the official weight puts it on the periodic table between Technetium and Ruthenium, and given Carter's line in an early episode about "Filling in a lot of gaps in the Periodic Table" (There aren't any gaps, the writers just didn't understand how it works), I gotta work with what we're told, so my doubletalky guess is this: They zip through the star and suck up Technetium and/or Ruthenium. Then they simply fire electrons at Technetium until it hits the atomic mass they need, or they somehow skim electrons off of Ruthenium until it goes down to the atomic mass they need. Ta-dah! Yer done! Nuclear Transmutation is....well, I wouldn't say it's amazingly easy, but it's something we can do now with our current technological level, though the energy cost is prohibitively high. Given the Ancient's ability to build starships that can run for 6 million + years, it's probably well within their skill set. So I'd imagine the seed ships just skim up what they need, and if they can't find what they need, they transmute what they've got into what they need. Make sense? Bearing in mind I'm sure they didn't actually plan this out when making the show, so I'm just winging it here.

The biggest problem with SGU was that they didn’t give us a big bad enemy. Like I still don’t understand why the Lucian Alliance wanted the ship? There was so many interesting plots that could have greatly explored but we got crappy drama and overarching plot lines. It’s painful that the 3rd season of SGU would have introduced to us the ancients aboard the ship and as well we would have seen destiny damages get repaired and we get to explore more parts of the ship. Maybe we can get SGU rebooted in the future but everyone died in stasis and earth finally reconnects and sends a new away mission and as well a young new cast and with canon.

It seems unlikely to me that the ancients didn't intend *any* exploration through the gates, or that they were simply intended for gathering of supplies. Destiny clearly had food production spaces on board, and as we saw, hopping to other planets to grab a bite to eat is really dangerous. So I'd suggest that they were intended to gather information and transmit it to Destny, as you suggested, and if any of the planets turned out to have something really interesting or unusual on it, they'd stop and check it out. Rush said that he feared that the journey wasn't *just* about the destination, but what happened along the way, and by skipping over their current galaxy they may miss some crucial piece. This is just his opinion, of course, but given the astounding amount of time he'd spent immersed in the Destiny's AI, I woulndn't be surprised if he'd gleaned some stuff subconsciously, and I suspect his opinion was also the opinion of the ancients. If it wasn't, honestly, there would be far easier ways for the Ancients to get to the end of the universe just using seed ships and gates, and foregoing the Destiny altogether.

I’m curious how/why there would be multiple seed ships along the same route... I mean if destiny caught up to one... I find it odd that there were more star gates after that encounter. Also, there may not be any future for destiny crew if there are no gates when they wake.....

  • @GateWorldDotNet

That's a good question. I'd speculate that several were needed given the number of gates along Destiny's route, and the amount of time it could take a seed ship to stop and get one set up, take sensor readings, etc. When we see the cluster of Stargates in close proximity in an episode like "Lost," it looks like one seed ship would have to spend a good deal of time zipping back and forth within a single region of space depositing Stargates. It's not as though there is only a single gate deposited in intervals down a narrow path; Destiny always has options, and gates are dispersed relatively broadly around the ship's path.

it had an interesting AI program that ran in the background when lifeforms were onboard, if you remember that episode when everyone on the destiny were having recurring dreams that involved finding an solution to how to fight the aliens that would ambush the destiny. it was kind of like a more sophisticated version of virtual reality, except that it would play these scenarios while you are sleeping, perhaps to save time while you rest as sleeping is a wasted period of potential time to find possible solutions. but they turned it off because it was disturbing their sleep, it's too bad they never came back and used this program again, it was quite intuitive and future thinking for problem solving. then the fact of the chair, which was first thought of as an repository of knowledge, however when they later used the device, they discovered that it had much more potential than just and uploader of knowledge, it was used to also download knowledge as well as to upload an entire Consciousness of that girl gin, and that other dude who was firstly taken out prematurely when they first started using it. i personally think young made a bad decision in forcing him out of the chair when he did, because my thoughts are that this chair was less advanced than the newer versions of this same tech, the man probably would have been fine if young didn't force him out of the device while it was in the middle of transferring data, which probably corrupted the file which is why that guy was so messed up after the fact. think of pulling out an usb from your computer while an transfer is not finished transferring, the files may not work after the fact or the files will be corrupted.

I don't recall any moment where it said the seed ship manufactures gates.....from what I remember, the seed ship had a warehouse of gates ready to go. I would have imagined that the technology to build such a gate would have been vital information for command, so why would they gloss over it if that were the case? Instead, this implied that the ship had enough for a limited number of planets, specifically chosen by the AI system based on habitability (only dropping the gate if it deemed "worthy" as it jumped from star to star), and unknown what would happen to the ship when it ran out....but the idea being there would be many of these ships in transit, enough supposedly to reach the destination of the "signal" (possibly 1 ship per galaxy? or quadrant?)

There's actually an automated Stargate factory inside the seed ships, which the team sees in a short scene in "Awakening." We know that it relays data back to Destiny, which would include addresses for gates on its path up ahead.

Good question. If they can deposit gates (with ramps, pedestals, etc.) on the surface of planets I think it's reasonable to conclude that they can scan, identify, and scoop up resources from a planet as needed. I think this is *ever so slightly* supported by the fact that a Stargate was blown apart by a drone ship in "Common Descent." It suggests these gates are not made of solid naquadah, like the Milky Way and Pegasus gates, but by whatever the seed ships find that they can make work.

i believe the destiny was seeking out evidence of the higher plane of existence that created these solar systems within the vast universe, if you remember an episode of SGU where the destiny crew discover an galaxy that shouldn't exist because according to their sensors on the ship, this galaxy was brand new and had no explanation in how it came to be into existence. this system had almost everything they would need as if this system was created just for them to get off of destiny. and some of the crew stayed on the planet, while the destiny stayed on it's path as they would eventually reunite with it a month later, but some folks didn't want to go back to the destiny and wanted to stay, so they did a lottery to who could stay and who could not. TJ the medic solder, she wanted to stay on the planet, but because she was an essential military officer, young didn't allow her to stay because she was too valuable to him, but she was also with child at the time. later in the show it was reveled to her through an dream after she lost her baby through some complications, in this vision or dream she meets up with the ppl that were left behind on the planet and they tell her that her child was saved by this unworldly lifeform that provided almost everything for them, and that her child would be just fine, they told her of an symbol in space of how she would know that this was not just a dream, and when this vision dream ended she saw this symbol in the nebula of space, and it was at this point where we knew what she saw was real. i personally think this lifeform was an ascended being that was of an much higher plane of existence than your normal ascended being, because this being had the ability to create entire solar systems and it's possible that its been doing this since the beginning of time, maybe there are more like this entity out there doing the same things. the ascended beings we know had great power and could do many things such as cast lightning or cause earthquakes and floods, but nothing like creating entire solar systems like this entity was doing. i don't think the Alteran knew what this thing was at first, which is why they needed to investigate it, but they eventually came across info on ascension from other sources, it's even possible they had a subspace data sharing capability that sent information back to them on one of earth's outposts while these seed ships and the destiny were on their mission. the stones have this capability and that tech they already had back when they first left their own galaxy for the milky way. it would seem the stones have no limit to their range, so it would make sense that they would have something relaying information back to the milky way essentially creating a way to obtain the info they needed without the need to board the destiny physically in the first place.

it's about time i come across someone who thinks in more detail, most folks take everything as is and was shown in the show without thinking of how things could have possibly taken place. my theory was that these ships all had multiple robots onboard, meant to keep the ships in good repair, but over the many millennia these bots got destroyed when they went out for more resources to repair the ship. the countdown for the gate wasn't only for the ppl to know how much time they had to get back to the destiny before it jumped into FTL, it was also set for the robots that went to scavenge planets for more resources to repair the destiny or even the seed ships. it's what makes the most sense given how long these ships have been running since they were first sent out into the universe. i also have a theory that there are more seed ships out there that were sent out with the new design gates with both the gray looking stargates as well as the Atlantis gate style still seeding outside their perspective galaxies, and probably preforming at an much faster rate because the tech is much more advanced than the destiny's tech at this point.

@@markberry6117 Ah. Thank you for explaining. That makes sense. The seed ships were obviously sent out way in advance of Destiny. I think it's also possible that they're way *faster* than destiny, since they're smaller, have more to do, and don't really have the frills that a manned ship would need. But I think a lot of this stems from us not really knowing what the Destiny's mission was. I mean, we know the purpose of it, but we don't know how they intended to go about accomplishing it. To put that a different way, the purpose of the Apollo Program was to go to the moon, however, there were a half-dozen ways we could have gone about that, and the one we chose was ultimately based on what we hoped to accomplish once we got there (Which wasn't too much, honestly.) If we'd intended to continue to visit for more than 10 missions, we would have gone about it a different way. If we'd intended to set up a base, then that mission would have been different than the one we got, *and* the continued-visits thing. All those involve "Man on the moon," but they go about it different ways. So basically they chose to go about the Destiny mission in a specific way because there was something they hoped to get from it that they couldn't if they went about it a different way. Make sense? So we know the goal, but we don't really know what the Ancients hoped to accomplish by reaching it. If that makes sense?

My problem with the seedships is the fact they must at some point collect rough material to build new gates. For that, the ship must collect minerals, like naquadah. For that, the only way is or teleport from raw materials, like Asgards teleport anything, or send shuttle with bots collecting raw materials. The second case is more probable, because no teleport system was found on the Destiny. But at some point, the franchise fucked up a little. Because when you have things like Asgards computers / matrix that can "create" things out of nowhere at subatomic level, like anti-replicator gun, food, cello, tretonin... In a spaceship in... Space, without having anything onboard, just by "creating things at subatomic level", it really fucked up the idea. That's why i love the "old tech" from Universe, seems so much more cool than those "beams" creating matter out of nowhere.

I think you're right, though there are some clues from the canon that suggest what could be a reasonable explanation. (1) The Asgard civilization was on the order of hundreds of thousands of years old, while the Ancients were probably already millions of years old when Destiny launched. It's entirely reasonable that they had matter-energy transporter technology, which would answer the question of how the seed ships deposited Stargates. The crew just hasn't found it yet, after two years on the ship ... or for some unknown reason the Ancients put it on the seed ships but not on Destiny at all. (2) The gates along Destiny's path are not only lower tech but also not nearly as strong (one is destroyed by drone weapons fire). They likely are not made of naquadah, as the Ancients knew that seed ships would not necessarily be able to find that specific mineral throughout its entire journey. So it stands to reason there are other materials that they can use to create working gates, even if those gates end up less sturdy and less capable. (3) The Asgard computer's "3D printing" technology almost certain has limitations in what it can create. The Stargate technology is sufficiently large and complex that it makes sense that, while the Asgard can construct a gate with the proper materials, they can't just summon one into existence with the computer. The gate would still require the acquisition of a suitable amount of naquadah or other suitable material.

The ships go through literal stars during their voyage. They can take every material they need here as well as the energy to convert them into any alliage they want. The idea of star replenishing is honestly brillant and 100% what you want to do if you want to send ships to explore the universe for eternity. Not only stars give you everything you need in terms of materials and energy, it also give you HUGE gravity assists boost, making you go faster and faster after each stars. You "just" need a ship that can withstand a star radiation.

The timeline is the issue here. Despite Rush's offhand remark in the first episode about when the ship was launched, Destiny is in fact much older than Atlantis -- which was built in the Milky Way millions of years ago. When they first activate the map of Destiny's path so far, the crew notes that it in fact passed through Pegasus early on in its journey.

I wish they would’ve done this show different. I was sooooo excited to hear we were going to finally see another new ship. It looked cool too. The show just wasn’t that good. I didn’t feel the connection I had with the other two shows. I truly hope if they do come up with a new show they have the destiny and Atlantis in it. Atlantis is on earth so they have to include it. I’m excited for the new show but in a way I’m also dreading it. I don’t want them to ruin the franchise by making another show that isn’t that good. Personally, I would rather not have another show than to have them make a disaster. So I hope they know what they are doing.

It was a tonal shift from the other shows. The show itself was pretty good, it was fine, honestly, it just dropped most of the hokey-jokey nature of the previous shows, which was appropriate as their situation was way more dire than the previous shows. But it took them a long time to figure out the right balance for that, and by the time they did, nobody was still watching.

During the show they did not really meet anything that would pose a threat to the ship if it was not suffering from deteriorated performance.

This timetable for Destiny's launch is actually a long-standing issue for canon. Brad Wright has confirmed for us that Destiny is older than Atlantis (as indeed it looks), which makes it many millions of years old. That means Rush's dialogue in the pilot -- "launched hundreds of thousands of years ago" -- was not meant to be a precise estimate but just him spitballing.

We know that by the end of their tenure in Atlantis 10,000 years ago (but probably much, much earlier given their proficiency with Stargate technology) the Ancients had some version of transporter tech. The city is equipped with transport chambers, which seem to operate in a similar manner to transport rings (which the Ancients too likely engineered).
