Ancient Greek salpinx (trumpet) | Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments
The ancient Olympic Games honored Zeus, king of the Greek gods, in competitive events including running, wrestling, chariot racing. Starting in 396 BCE (around 2,400 years ago), trumpeting contests were held to announce the festivities. Believed to be the only surviving ancient Greek trumpet, this salpinx made of 13 bone pieces and bronze joints was likely played during this time.

@@sydneywheeler5037 as a nerd, this is what we look like when we find something we're passionate about. he is lucky; not only does he get to present this piece, but clearly he also plays a brass instrument so he can produce the embouchure required to get sound out of this thing
Dang I want to know more about the provenance of that particular instrument. How old is it and how did it survive in such great shape?
Do we not get to see the original instrument?
I'd love to see that in the hands of someone like Alison Balsom or a good french horn player -- bet they could get a lot more notes out.
So, it's full of ancient spit.
disliked for BCE
BC... not BCE... don't be pretentious. Also, if you are describing my Greek history, even ancient, I didn't give you permission to date my Greek history with such a term. Check with us Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians first... and respect how we date and timeline ourselves. Your act of referring to my Greek history with BCE is not being politically correct, but ironically yet another act of American imperialism.
