    The crazy thing about Egyptian history is that the first dynasty was founded around 3000 B.C, and the Hyksos invaded in the 1600s B.C. That's almost a thousand and a half years of unbroken history. There are so few times in history where a culture has remained so ... static. It's fascinating

    mikey robinson and cleopatra was closer to being greek by nearly all measures than to the old egyptian rulers. ptolemaic incestous hellenistic offspring, dressed in ancient egyptian costumes, basically. (refering to the static point: even during the hellenistic rule in egypt, ancient egyptian culture absorbed the greeks pretty good, so far that we got the idea of cleopatra as "classical" egyptian ruler instead of being part of the greek diadochian ruling class)

    Great overview of ancient Egyptian military history. Minor nitpick; the Hyksos did not, I believe, ever control the entirety of Egypt as for south as the First Cataract, as the map at 1:23 seems to show. The Seventeenth Dynasty based in Waset (Thebes) managed to retain its independence, albeit over a greatly diminished territory. The Theban monarchs were precariously situated between the hostile powers of Nubia and and the Hyksos, but were never fully occupied by either. The sons of King Seqenenra Taa, Kamose (last ruler of Dynasty XVII) and Ahmose (founder of the great Dynasty XVIII) fought a war on two fronts against the Hyksos and the Nubians and ultimately succeeded in expelling the Hyksos and pushing Egyptian territory further south into Nubia. Under the reign of Kamose, the Theban monarchs went on the offensive, first launching raids into Hyksos territory, and then intercepting a messenger sent along the oasis route by the Hyksos King Apepi to the new ruler of Kush. The message proposed that the two simultaneously invade the Theban Kingdom from the North and South. With this vital piece of intelligence, Kamose embarked on a pre-emptive attack on the Hyksos, which was successful, but died before the Hyksos capital of Hutwaret (Avaris) could be taken. After a regency for the young successor Ahmose, the Northern campaign was relaunched with a renewed vigour, recapturing Iunu (Heliopolis) and Memphis, followed by the fortress of Tjaru (cutting off any Hyksos retreat or reinforcement from Canaan) and then finally Hutwaret. With Lower Egypt liberated from Hyksos rule, Ahmose began another campaign into Nubia, recapturing Buhen and extending Egypt's borders beyond the Second Cataract.

    Very astute nickpick :) I put "Hyksos Influence and Territory" on that map to include the Thebes dynasty when they where temporarily tributaries....but technically they were independent the whole time. And true they never where occupied but they did submit by paying tribute (taxes)...I should have probably mentioned it, may have oversimplified that point. Thanks for the great comment/info! :)

  • @Smartacus98

    Yeah that makes sense, it is always going to be a bit murky when the subject matter is a time period long before modern ideas of "states" and official borders between them really existed. Most maps I can find of the delicate political situation in the Second Intermediate Period refer more to vague 'spheres of influence' of each ruling dynasty rather than to established borders. I imagine that those settlements that found themselves on the edges of each sphere weren't exactly clear on to which overlord they owed their allegiance, and it probably fluctuated regularly. Indeed, the Egyptological separation between each successive dynasty was quite often more geographical than chronological, and the number assigned to each is a purely historiographic abstraction (much like the somewhat arbitrary distinction between the "Roman Empire" and "Byzantine Empire"). In the intermediate periods many dynasties ruled different parts of Egypt simultaneously, and our categorisation of them as wholly different political entities with established territorial extents is perhaps imposing a modern framework on a uniquely ancient context. Taxation and tribute only makes things fuzzier (especially in a largely pre-monetary era). Where should historians draw the line between tribute paid to another for the sake of retaining sovereignty, such as the early Han paid to the Xiongnu to stave off encroachment (and later vice-versa), and the payment of tribute indicative of one nation's being subject to another, such as the Kingdoms of Siam and Joseon were (however nominally) to the Qing? Are such notions of tributary states even relevant to Egypt in the Second Intermediate period? Still, a very minor point, and one far too complex to elaborate on in a concise rundown of Egyptian military history less than four minutes long, so it hardly mars the quality of the video. Though come to think of it, a similarly concise explanation of the woefully complex bureaucracy of the Imperial Chinese tribute system might make for an interesting video, it is an endlessly confusing topic in dire need of succinct elucidation.

    After the Hyksos occupation, Egypt was almost constantly at war. It was the breadbasket of the Mediterranean World; it sat on the Nile, which was the most reliable river in the known world, it sat on gold mines, copper mines, and even turquoise mines. It was like Scrooge McDuck's Money Bin of the Bronze Age: try and take it at your own risk. After Ramses III, Egypt went through a revolving door of foreign occupiers: Nubians, Libyans, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans--and all those occupiers were from the BC Era.

    Thank you Rinad :) The only iron weapons I know of in the late new kingdom (that we know of) were small daggers for royalty. It is quite possible in the late new kingdom there could have been an iron mace used...But because iron erodes far more than bronze or copper none have survived. Because by the late new kingdom iron was just barely catching on (Hittites and Assyria at the forefront) usually it was treated almost as a precious metal used for fancy ceremonial weapons...but I am sure if a Pharoah or some high offical really wanted an iron mace they could have got one :) Thanks! great question.

    You're right there are many of these black supremacists who claim egypt was a black civilization until either the persians, greeks or romans invaded yet they never provide proof that the native population was wiped out or replaced. Most of these black supremacists would trace their lineage back to west africa which is literally on the other side of egypt. Claiming they're white is also dead wrong. Ofc there would it depend on the person some would be a bit lighter and others a bit darker. Look at actor Rami Malek for example he is from egyptian descent but he doesn't look like a sub saharan african.

  • @samuelbabic9441

    @samuelbabic9441

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hazzmati Yeah your right. Ive read discovered egyptian mummise were more closer to europeans than sub sahharan africans. Ancient egyptians were most definetly or likely caucosoids. Also when the Arabs conquered Egypt did the arabs outbreed/replace the real Egyptians or did the real Egyptians just get arabised/Islamised. A whole population can't just disappear. Sure today they might be a mix but should have mostly real Egyptians blood. If not ain't a Coptic the closest to what a real Egyptian would look like?

When they're in this pose the reins aren't in their hands but tied around their waists! 1:44 You would think that would pull someone out of the chariot right? But no. It seems that it was common. Last I checked, the Kopesh's curve has nothing to do with combat. You can make a longer and stronger weapon out of bronze if you make it that shape where as a straight one bends more easily. It wasn't curved to hook behind shields or anything, it was curved because that was a strong shape for bronze to hold. It's a structure thing, not a combat thing.

If Cush(Nubia) the older brother and Mizraim(Egypt) the younger brother both came from Ham and later were the 1st to populate most of Africa then it’s logical to conclude that the original inhabitants of Nubia later known as Ethiopia and Egypt were black, brown, yellow, or as they say here in the United States Of America people of color. There skin tones aught to more accurately reflect the original people.

    أَحْمَدَ "Turkic people have always been in Central Asia" Lol, wut? Have you ever read a text book? Central Asia was entirely Iranian before Ghengis Khan's conquests in 900AD. Before that the Turks lived in inner-Mongolia. 2nd, the original Turks were East Asians. The modern Turks of Central Asia and Anatolia speak Turkish because they were ruled over by Turks for centuries. Look up the Scythians or the Sogdians. That area only became Turkish 1,000 years ago. Before that they were Iranians.

    Thanks! Hmmm...I am undecided on that one. There is a channel called "ancient architects" that I have watched that has some very interesting theories on how they were built by an older civilization and the ancient Egyptians moved in....he has some very interesting points. I do believe they did build some, and renovate some...The great pyramids at Giza though have a very different style of architecture inside compared to other pyramids. I think there are good arguments for and against...but time may tell... Also the great sphinx I believe is much older and renovated later.

    Oh look, another kid who thinks he knows what he's talking king about. Guess what, everything you said was basically objectively wrong. My name isn't that Tyrone, thanks very much, and I never claimed that I shared an ethnicity or with ethiopians. I am the proud product of west Africans and central africans. I simply like African history, and, ethiopians are African (shocking, I know). That being said, in a social context, ethiopians, along with all sub Saharan Africans would be considered "black". And no, us African Americans are not bantu. The Bantu did not expand into west Africa. They originated in south west Africa and expanded southwards, and eastwards. While it's possible that I have some bantu DNA, its likely overwhelmingly west african. Brazilians and other former portuguese colonies likely have more bantu in them, as their origins lay much more in central africa than us african americans. And they weren't murderous. Theres strong evidence that most of them just mixed with native populations.

To learn the modern people share less than 3% bloodline with the ancients makes since though.There more related to africans then Arabs in the modern people.
