Ancient Egyptian Festivals and Celebrations

Ancient Egyptian Festivals and Celebrations
How did ancient Egyptians celebrate holidays? What was it like to attend an ancient Egyptian festival celebration? In this video, we’ll explore some of ancient Egypt’s biggest festivals and delve into what it would have been like to attend one of these celebrations. Festivals were not just a part of ancient Egyptian religion, but also a social and sensory experience.

This book by Teeter is one I love to use when teaching ancient Egyptian religion. It covers many aspects of ancient Egyptian belief and ritual and devotes an entire chapter to ancient Egyptian festivals and what they were like:

This book by Meskell offers a vivid description of life in ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom, including what festivals were like. It also has more anthropological comparisons, which are interesting, but a little harder to follow for the general reader:

Egyptian festivals like these were great. It reminds me of the Chinese festivals, especially the lunar Chinese New Year celebrations. The new year celebration lasts 15 days. Day 1 is the most important one with big feasts, wine, beer, gatherings, songs, and dances. Day 5 mirrors Day 1 only in a smaller scale. Day 15 is a huge event with lanterns and feast, especially sweet food.

Massive, live-action Ouija boards? Count me in! As always, Speaker, you have done a wonderful job of making these complex topics usually reserved for the rarified air of academia accessible to humble amateurs like me! Thank you so much for this series and please keep going! I will do my part to help promote this. More people need to know about TDSO.

I love that as a summary: "massive, live-action Ouija boards"! Your comments are always an inspiration to me, Keith. Thanks again for taking the time to not only watch, but let me know what you think too.

Thanks, Valerie! That's exactly what I was aiming for :) I'm so glad to have you as a subscriber. I'd love to hear about what kinds of videos you would like to see in the future - check out the "For subscribers: 2018 update & poll" video from last week to see a bit about what I have planned for this year and to let me know what topics you would like to see me cover in future videos.

This is truly educational as it helps to spread knowledge, which otherwise is restricted to the elites in the academic coteries, in an accessible, delightful approach! If you allow me, I would just recommend a slower pace for each info chunk to sink in better in the brain, especially for those with special needs and also elderly people - or adding an option for reducing the video's speed. Thank you so much for this and congrats for the amazing work!

The video was very interesting, especially like the graphics. The Egyptian Festivals remind me of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, I have vague memories of that one.

Carnavals have their roots in the various carrus navalis type festivals in Antiquity, nice that you notice the similarity.

There really are a lot of parallels between ancient Egyptian festivals and modern carnival/Mardi Gras.

Very interesting sister. Thanks. the 14 day celebration sounds very similar to the amount of time it Takes Persephone (Madonna) aka asteroid Eris to transit the sun which is the same amount of time that hurricanes last. I've already research the day of the Dead which is also Persephone, Mictecacihuatl, Queen of the Underworld, etc... Thanks for Sharing. Peace and Cheers!
