I hope this HCU was a wake-up call for Mediavine and they can do something to make their ad experiences better.

Marie, why does a site get boost in march core update, but then gets -50% in October Core Update? what precisely does Google change in few months that can make a site so uncertain.

Different type of update and countering fake sites with AI content was clearly in mind for October and not in March.

With each core update Google actually updates the knowledge graph according to the changing semantic relations between queries and the SERP changes accordingly. Your content might've been semantically top notch to Google but as soon as Google updated their knowledge graph and the semantic relations between queries changed your content is no longer semantically accurate and hence less authoritative in the eyes of crawlers. For example: During March the search engine determined the queries " solo travelling" and "travelling with a pet companion" are semantically relevant queries (maybe it found lots of people searching for solo travelling as well as travelling with dogs). So if your article on solo travelling had a subsection on travelling with dogs or pets you're displaying authority to some extent. In comes october, people might be searching for "solo travelling" and "travelling to national parks" at the same time. So the search engine determines these two to be semantically related and updates the knowledge graph. And since your site doesn't have this query answered you're demoted and a site that answered the query is promoted.

I'm wondering if moving my answer snippets to the top paragraph might be a good idea? Currently, I have it located under the top intro paragraph.

I think it's worth a try for many types of queries, yes. If you're writing to an audience who is looking to read a full article, it may not be as important, but if most of your audience is quickly looking for an answer to their question, then it makes sense to me that content that's most helpful will be stuff that makes it easy for the searcher to find a concise answer. Now, take it a step further and instead of just being the answer that backs up what Bard says, *also* offer information gain - information that makes the page more helpful to searchers than anything else they can find on other sites.

@@Marie_Haynes Thanks Marie...Considering that BARD will soon be out and that it will probably take several months to repair my site as well as several more additional months for G to (hopefully) rerank my site, it makes me wonder if it's worth the effort to make all the repairs...we'll see.

Hi Marie, one of my IG friends mentioned that my website had been featured with my chicken soup in one of your videos :). At first I did not want to believe it, but when I saw it, I had to believe it! Thank you! Kata

I am in the travel space and USA Today produces very thin and anything but unique, and arguably unhelpful) content and is rarely affected by core updates, as far as I can tell.

brand identity is more important to Google than EEAT. USA Today is a news brand entity that is placed inside Google's knowledge graph unlike blogs with no brand recognition.

Exactly. If your business model is providing services, in this case SEO audits, and all you think is how to get more clients, every core update and website penalties feels like Christmas. So why not create a video about it and talk AGAIN about user experience, images, ads, and all the nonsense. This happens with every single core update. All the "experts" trying to get a bite of the market share and land one more client. I never call out ANYONE on the internet but this video is exactly what is wrong with the marketing industry. She is actually cheering for more penalties cos that's more business, not thinking straight and how evil G has become. One day it will destroy the SEO audit business as well. I am not wishing that it's facts and it's coming. It happened with Social Media - from organic reach and traffic to paid ads, so these big media publishers pivoted to affiliate marketing with BS content. And they rank for every single search term across all verticals. Helpful content? Yeah right. It's big companies investing and buying more and more web properties and dominating the SERPs.

I fully agree with these comments. Ton of sites deserved to be punished by these millions of ads all around, fluff content just to get to read a snippet that is 2 sentences. Good job google

You are not thinking straight. That's how Google makes money - Ads. Don't blame the content creators blame Google. You either sell product or service or you do ads or affiliate marketing. I do agree on the fluff content though, they shouldn't rank.
