Note that crews throughout history have reflexively abandoned tanks, even after non-penetrating hits. After a hit, the instinct to GTFO out these metal coffins is extremely strong, and only a very well-trained/experienced crew is going to stick around to see for sure if their mount is going to explode. Also, one would think that crews accustomed to (relatively flammable) Soviet tanks would be highly likely to abandon the tank if there was even a small chance of secondary explosion.

@@user-bx7ow5zn5u I agree the performance of the western tanks hasn’t been much better than the Soviet designs, which is what I predicted. I happen to believe the late model T-80s and (especially) the T-72B of circa 1985 was more than a match for the early M1. It’s just that the M1 went on to be continuously developed for 35 years, whereas the Soviet tanks are still basically the same as they were then. Used properly, a T-72B3 (as long as it has thermals) is a formidable weapon system, ideally suited to a land war across the North German Plain. However, I think that modern weapons have made *all* tanks highly vulnerable - regardless of whether they were developed in Nizhny Tagil or Munich.

Any tank can be destroyed! It always depends on how you use it. Similar to the Turks who suffered heavy losses (Leos). That wasn't because of the tank, but because of how the Turks acted! A tank is not a work of God! Not even if it is a German Leo. The Abrams (who is said to be a slight inferior to Leo) will fare no differently in Ukraine. The clear difference to the Russian tank, however, is that the probability that the soldiers survive a direct hit is significantly higher. In a Russian tank, you're as good as dead as soon as you start moving. In a Western tank, that's not the case.

I’m surprised by how many have been destroyed/abandoned but then whenever I see people hype anything now I immediately question it. If crews get it in their head they are invincible and they are better than the enemy then they take more risks and expose themselves. Clearing minefields in broad daylight. Russian former MI sergeant here Artillery gets countered, air cover is nonexistent for both sides currently. The only reason Russian helicopters were active is because they were in a zone with heavily negated air-defense of AFU, since the last 2 months were spent on knocking out as much of it as possible on potential axis of Ukrainian attack This is how any war goes when you don't completely and utterly overmatch the enemy in every possible dimension, especially in manpower, industrial output of equipment and ammo, and EW coverage. Chaos, no support, allies not responding, no actual intel, no time for mission prep, and a constant flow of fresh recruits to replace your losses who need to be taught a lot on the spot. Hence the Russian doctrine of not relying too much on the initiative of NCOs and the middle officer corps, as well as utilizing simple maneuvers and tactics, since the conventional wisdom is that the sole purpose of the small ~1 million contract army is to die, holding off the enemy while ~10-15 millions of civilians get conscripted to actually win the war, and you will not have even 6 months to train them, they will need to fight in several weeks Tldr: no complete overmatch - this is normal stuff. Have complete overmatch - war turns into a slaughter like in Georgia 2008, Iraq 2003, Syria 2015 etc.

judging by the new open data, the artillery was destroyed by drones, the air cover was destroyed by Russian aircraft, Ukraine had air support there, but all the planes were shot down, air defense was also destroyed by lancet drones, and that is why the tanks and Bradley were left without cover. When the column of armored vehicles with leopards and Bradley went on a mission, at that moment they had artillery, and air support and air defense, but when they arrived, it was all destroyed in their rear They could not drive across the field, as the field was mined, it also seems that Russia threw mines there remotely in front of them and also behind them. Then the evacuation group was also lured into the same trap, leaving these ravings and the tank intact, and only then, after several iterations with attempts to evacuate equipment and people, all this was finally bombed with artillery This is apparently what happened in that offensive, which failed. Looks like it was the classic honey trap, repeated twice or thrice.

The most famous leopard 2A6 loss is primarily due to a lack of mine clearing vehicles. They only have 2 BRM-2s with dozers for mine clearing which is insufficient. Usually dozers are for doubling up after MCLCs have cleared a path and push aside left over mines. And these assets usually do their job while under the cover of night or smoke supported by artillery and direct fire by friendly tanks. During the actual charge, you probably want a roller to lead so if there are leftover mines, you don't get immobilized. As for the Bradley losses in that one, the commander had the dilemma of leaving behind the stranded crew and infantry or go try and rescue them at the risk of losing many more vehicles.

@@youlaughyouphill842 You morons still couldn't learn mines, IEDs, artillery or indeed KA-52 can easily destroy Leopard 2s! for example Vikhr missile can easily disable a Leopard 2A6! Simply because 2A6 has same hull as 2A4 and it's hull protection isn't much different than a Bradley!! Turkish army got 20 damaged and 4 destroyed 2A4s in Syria, none of destroyed were from ATGMs (2 IEDs and 2 were bombed by airforce after they were captured with seemingly repairable damage) which is a good thing for crew protection. But none of ATGMed 2A4s could stay operational and got excessive damage. There isn't much difference between a disabled and destroyed tank in the battle field and often they have to be abandoned as we can see here. Turkish army also used Sabra tanks in front lines which is a freaking M60A1 with composite armor package covering almost entire tank but it is outperformed 2A4s by far. Not a single Sabra was destroyed despite many ATGM and IED attacks and they could stay operational often. Not only Leopard 2s even Abrams are weak against attacks to their hull but this is the reason why there are reactive armor packages covering entire sides of Abrams! On the other hand Leopard 2A4 or 2A6 have nothing but prayers defend it's hull, firepower and mobility wise one of the best tanks if not the best but armor protection is so insanely exaggerated...

What? Leopard 2 is far easier and quicker to do repairs onto, with the tracks being some of the easiest to replace among MBTs and the powerpack being modular, so you can just pull it out and put a new one in. M2 is much the same, easier than any soviet MBT. Almost all of the documented recovered losses have returned to service already.
