    because he’s actually a good actor outside of one single type of role lol. Rock and cena do fine in their role, but they’re the same character in every movie. He seems to take most things he gets into pretty seriously. the way he talked about being super nervous and not being happy with his performance because he had so much nerves in his MMA fight was really cool. Nice when famous people are down to earth and not arrogant or sorta self absorbed.

    Something overlooked with Rabban in the 2021 & 2024 movies... Hes no fool. He's navigating the most complex political landscape in history. He successfully leads a false flag combined arms force against an entrenched enemy when his faction is the lesser partner. He looses the favor of a tyrant / gets supplanted by a psychopath without either killing, maiming, or otherwise eliminating him as a threat. Hes juggling everyones plots, secrets and a intrigue that he has massive accountability for but no control over. His failures aren't avoidable given his constraints, but the successes he achieves are in no way guaranteed. To realistically survive the way he does he would have to have a nose for politics and a deep cunning and survival instinct.

    Add to that his brutal "mismanagement" of Arrakis was following the Barons orders, as part of Vladimir's plan to make Feyd-Rautha look good when he took over. When things start to go really badly, he alters course that and tries to stabilize the situation with policy changes instead of just more repression. Rabban tends to get his poor reputation because on a first read-through the Baron constantly telling the reader he is stupid sticks out more. On a second read-through, with the understanding that the Baron was not in fact, the exquisite mastermind he thought he was, it becomes far easier to see that Rabban is smarter than the Baron gives him credit for.

    The most recent version is my favorite. His “fear” was clear. Of his uncle, of losing control, of being looked down on, etc. While Feyd-Rautha had no fear, but possessed ambition that quelled his worst tendencies.

  • @sudowtf

    Feyd’s fear gets overshadowed by his intrigue for dangerous and odd situations. You can see this when Paul uses the voice to silence the high mother during his standoff with the emperor during the last part of the movie. Everybody felt the voice in that moment and got scared for a second including Feyd, but his intrigue is stronger than his fear and you can see his mind trying to understand the power Paul now has. It was also said in the movie that Feyd’s biggest weakness was his s3xual desires, which were very deeply manifested in him. Coupled with his bloodthirst, sadism and psychopathy he was far more dangerous than Rabban because he had more control over his emotions, but not his desires.

    Hot take: While every single actor did the performances of their careers, its even more impressive from bautista because he's not a trained actor. He just ended up in this business, and he matches the career defining acting of other professional actors with his own, even without the background, and that is seriously impressive. Kudos to him.

    Agreed. But I think in the last 2 Dune movies leaving out the scene mentioned by this presentation about Harkonnen removing his artillery and leaving out a scene where Rabban was being a bit intellectual was a disservice to the character. That conversation also shows the Harkonnen shooting themselves in the foot. Duke Atreides was correct about desert power being needed to rule Arrakis.

    In this version Rabban's intelligence was implied through body language. He was prone to violent outbursts, but beforehand he clearly gave thought to all his actions. Outwardly he seems slow, almost stupid; but his actions afterwards, though emotional, were clearly deliberate. This is what made this representation so compelling. I don't like this character, but I want to see this character develop to the bitter end.

    He always took the world as it was on its face, never looking beneath its skin, but that was as much of a virtue as a vice: He never outsmarted himself, never became blinded by self-deception or pipe dreams or bad gambles. He only did stupid things because, to a man wearing a leash and who knows who signs his meal ticket, not doing them would have been the greater stupidity. As it was, even reaping his reward at the end of everything, all that could be said is that he died far more cleanly than would have happened otherwise. I don't even know how much he was even interested in brute force and aggression so much as they were the tools at hand. His evil, I think, would naturally be the banal evil of men spinning the wheel of industry and not caring whose blood slicks the gears. Pragmatic apathy.

While Rabban was no Mentat he understood the strength of the Sarduakar if the Fremen could kill Sarduakar a feet no Harkonen force could do then he had right to worry had only The Baron taken these words to consideration then the ambush the Harkonens and the Corrinos faced might have been avoided or maybe could have denied The Fremen their surprising victory allowing the empire to regroup. He wasn't brilliant, as the Baron was, but neither was he stupid; he wasn't a great athlete like Feyd, but he was still a powerful man; his greatest failing, as he shared with both of them, was his inability to overcome his own cultural association and upbringing. Second in all things.

  • @sectorgovernor
    @sectorgovernor2 ай бұрын

    It's pity you didn't bring up the House trilogy ; Rabban got lot of appearence and his backstory is revealed there, including how he earned the name 'Beast'. It was actually one of the last words by his father, Abulurd ; something like this 'you won't kill me because you are still my son, and you are a human being and not a beast'. Rabban lost his temper and strangled his father. After this he smiled and said something like this 'Now everyone call me Beast'. Those books also clearly implies Rabban was sadistic and enjoyed hurting and killing people. But I understand that some people don't consider those books canon.

    I actually liked the first three Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson novels (the House books as you rightly call them), even though there were details that conflicted with the original novels. I don't consider them canon and stopped reading them after Hunters of Dune. They fell off in my opinion.

    I forgot to mention it in this video, but for all Dune videos I make at the moment they're only going to cover what we're given from Frank Herbert's works. If enough people want to see the sequels and prequels covered I'll certainly make videos on the information we receive there, but as you point out many people don't consider these books to be canon and I wanted to offer people the "untainted" versions so to speak first. I understand the sentiment though, perhaps I'll make an expanded Dune video on Rabban sometime in the future!

    Reading the House Trilogy prequel series really drove home how sick Glossu Rabban and the Baron were. Their end was too good for them. Let's just say you know exactly what happened to Gurney Halleck and his sister. He also murdered his own grandfather by throwing him off a cliff and then strangled his father. He actually decided to name himself Beast in that moment as a rejection of the name his parents gave him.

    I loved Dave Bautista as Rabban, and i loved this video. This analysis was totally on point. Dave Bautista's performance had so much intensity and emotion in it, you can't help but be drawn in. It was a joy to watch. That said, his ability to accurately gauge how formidable the Fremen were would have been a useful element to incorporate in the films. You can see so much of House Harkonnen in the machinations of House Frey of ASOIAF. Like the Freys, the Harkonnens are upjumped merchants who made their vast fortunes though ignoble means. And though their source of wealth won't earn them respect from their social superiors, they know full well how powerful it makes them, despite the disdain of more noble families. And Beast Rabban surely inspired the large number of cruel and thuggish Freys we see in the course of the story. Awesome video.

    A little something from our newest movie, I saw a trailer with Bautista and recognized him as Rabban in the first moment, great choice for the role. But what I find interesting is, that he is the one who at least came close to the truth about the Fremen...that there´s more of them than anyone thought and that they were much more of a threat even without numbers. If he had been under someone more open that Vladimir Harkonnen, their house might have fared better with a less brutal and more thoughtful version of the same Rabban the story got.

    It is interesting how baron harkonnen consolidates as much as much as possible in his hold. The only time he ever shown to be willing to part with that power is when it is needed or when it would benefit his dynasty he gave Rabban stewardship of dune as a means to prove himself and gain legitimacy as his successor perhaps sensing Fayd was a bit too blood thirsty of an heir. Only when Rabban is unable to quell the unrest was he dismissed and the role given to Fayd who is much more successful. As soon as Fayd begins to prove himself competent does he start scheming to join his line with emperor's daughter using the blackmail that the emperor was personally involved in the fall of the Atrideus. As for when the emperor shows up unannounced he forms an immediate contingency plan of having the great houses appear as an insurance policy if he were to be deposed plunging humanity into a civil war. The ultimate irony of all of this is his actions would cement his lines rule over the galaxy for thousands of years without ever intending to do so through Paul and Lehto.
