Seth Rudetsky's like: "Who is this infant going after my job?!" Great analysis!
seth rudetsky is shook
Dear heavens...no really, if you DON’T become the next Seth Rudetsky, there’s a problem...not many MT majors take the music of MUSICAL theatre and theory (when it’s well written anyway) seriously!! Well written musicals will ALWAYS have songs that use music theory to inform character/acting/etc. and you nailed this!
I've always thought that What Baking Can Do was the most incredible song in Waitress, SUTBM is amazing as well but WBCD just spoke to me. I'm nowhere near done this vid but I just had to come and say that your analysis is amazing so far but specifically: I'm OBSESSED with the first key change ("serve my worries away....I can fix this") and I NEVER understood why until this vid. such a genius observation and I'm as "can't get over how brilliant this is" as you now that I know this. I always had that feeling but musically didn't understand why! earned a subscribe from me :)
Earl actually reveals that Jenna's mom is dead later in the show. Great analysis though! I would love an analysis of Waving through a Window
AH! What baking can do is my favorite. It’s amazing!

Nice job. Sara actually did the riff with the C during her run after Jessie. But Betsy does such a great job with it too.
what baking can do is my favorite song from the whole musical
Can you be my boyfriend? Wow, I wish that this were the standard for all musical theatre students.
The word choice you use and your intelligence on all of this is incredible. I know this song backwards and forwards and everything you said was perfectly structured and so accurate. Definitely subscribing and hope you continue making videos like this one!!! NEW BIG FAN
That Betsy Wolfe riff comes directly from Sara’s performance

Seth Rudetsky is QUAKING
What the key goes down but the melody goes up, I think it represents how her life is going down but she is trying to get herself get back up
I’m singing this now in my vocal lessons and performing it on my junior recital next semester and 🥴🥴 it’s my favorite song from the musical and I’m so excited. My favorite line is the um.. “Make it up, and surprise them tell them all my secrets but disguise them, so they dance on the tongues of the very people that they’re secrets from” because the whole musical when she’s baking a new pie it’s from something big that happened to her. Pottomer pie for example made up of all the things that were good and bad about her affair with him and then she brings it to him for him to eat !!! Ugh so good ah it’s so beautiful Sara Barreillis is an absolute GENIUS songwriter
I loved the way you broke this down. I'm a musical theatre major too, and there are something you forget to look out for sometimes like a note that isn't in the key and it can tell you so much!!!! "the character may lie, but the music won't" ------ genius.
While I am a fan of the show, I often overlook this song because I was first introduced to the show by Sara Bareilles' album, where this song was originally Door Number Three, which has the same intro music :)

Mateo, your deconstruction of this song has elevated my already high opinion of it by several levels! Now I need to get a hold of the sheet music and play it myself with your analysis in mind. I also saw Waitress on Broadway with the phenomenal Jessie Mueller (can't wait to see her in Carousel next year!). I've been working on a showcase performance of "Where Did the Rock Go" from School of Rock and would be interested in your thoughts about it, if you have the time. Just subscribed to your channel. You rock!!
Legit you are impressive. I appreciated this deconstruction so much. I even learned a bit too. Thank you so much for sharing. You're hella talented and very well researched
The scale that you were talking about is the Lydian dominant scale it's surprising because I thought Sara was a self taught pianist but she has more music theory than I thought

I think shes self taught when it comes to learning to play piano. I think its that she takes basic music theory and creates her own from that point on. Its like painting. Yes you can teach a simple style of art but you wont get the same results with someone so incredibly talented and unique who has taken the basic principles of painting and made a work of art so extrodinarily beautiful and priceless; yet stay true to the artform that was taught in the first place. (Sorry this is just one big metaphor for her brilliance)

Actually, Sara took piano lessons while in the second grade, but only for a short while. (And I'm quoting this from her book, "Sounds Like Me" -- great read, btw you guys should read it) "but as soon as my piano teacher (who pronounced my name "SAY-rah") asked me to do something different with my left hand than my right hand, I was overwhelmed and over it. But my love of music and of the piano in particular stayed." Sara also mentioned that she's always had a good ear, and "although the mechanics of playing along to myself on the piano were much more difficult, I always had an affinity for it." So she's not completely self-taught, but after that brief piano lesson from when she was young, she didn't lose her love for the piano so she continued to learn by herself.
I was looking for an explanation of this song for my daughter, who is auditioning with the song without having seen the show. Brilliant.
Just stumbled upon this channel after watching covers of this song and eyyy Sheridan
What Baking Can Do is my favorite song from Waitress, I feel like it needs much more attention. Door number three was very good, but when I heard what baking can do I loved it so much (I saw it live performed by Jessie Muller and the original cast).
Thanks for this analysis, loved it! One thing I love about this song is how cleverly Sara shows that Jenna uses her baking to mask her misery, but only while watching this vid did I realize the lyric "I place it on display" is also actually hinting towards that... So many lines in this song are just so layered, it's awesome. I don't know music theory so thank you so much for pointing out the downward key change for the chorus, that is really clever and awesome.
This is the first video I've seen from you and I just wanted to say I love love love your enthusiasm and how you analyzed one of my most favorite songs from my favorite musical aaaah!! This was brilliant! 💓💓💓 I especially loved how you talked about Jenna digging herself deeper into her hole even though she thinks that she's doing the exact opposite and how it's emphasized/further brought out by the "fake" key change that gives the illusion of going up but actually goes down!! And yes oh my gosh thank you for pointing out the whole "coming in a beat earlier than everyone expected" and the dreamlike and eerie feel of the music! Can't wait to see more from you!
Actually, I believe that Sara did that riff originally! This is a really cool breakdown though
Just stumbled on this, a hundred years after its posting and I am stunned by your brilliance and maturity!!! You've probably graduated by now and I hope you're doing amazing things!!!
I cried after hearing this song live for the first time and now you’re making me cry again😭😭😭
I LOVED this so much! If you need a suggestion, I would love an analysis of "A Soft Place to Land", another genius song in the musical.
Waitress!! Oh, how much I love Sara Bareilles and her music.
You totally get it. I love this and I agree, Sara Bareilles is GENIUS
This was in my recommended and I’m glad it was bc this was a REALLY good analysis and break down of this song and I love your emotions and personality and omg your voice anyway I just thought I’d let you know that I am subscribing and this video was amazing and you’re cute
I really adore this musical, though I've never actually seen it, but I heard the album and saw some Vids concerning the musical (and of course the crappy mobile vids of the whole musical...shame on me), really cool insight of musical theatre itself... I for myself like to listen to the broadway songs first, imagine the whole story line and compare that to the actually narrative... Keep those vids coming^_^
I was kinda in love when you started talking then I fell in love completely when you started singing (and the video is amazing by the way!).
Jesus you're talented. Love these types of videos keep it up!
This analysis is so damn good and god this song is so clever
wow this was so interesting to watch, i didnt even realize it was 14 minutes! you really revealed some awesome points about the song and reinforced to me that sara bareilles is a genius
I could listen to you do this all day long! Ax
Boy, aren't we glad you did... I love your content, informative but also watching how passionate you are of your subject matters... IS CHERRY TOPPING! All the best, keep going!
Also I completely agree this is a REALLY underrated song.
Love love love your analysis!!! Music theory is something I wish I had more education about, but you beautifully described why I love this song.
This is my favorite song from the musical! Possibly my favorite song ever! It’s so good and I’m glad you analyzed it
This was such a cool video! I'm not a music student but I've always found this kinds of analysis really interesting, and you explain it in a really simple way. It's also so nice to see someone who's really passionate explain things like this, you can tell you're really enjoying it. Really great video :)))
I’m wanting to do this song at my school talent show and this video really helped me see the song differently
Very much enjoyed this, especially the key change down melody up part. The past tense and content of "something I never got the chance to ask her about" tell us a narrative fact but the real hammer blow is the pronoun. She has been speaking to her mother throughout and suddenly says something the dispells that on a deep grammatical level. Not only is mom obviously dead, Jenna's imaginary vision of her is swept away. You, you, you, her. Bubble pops. It's a small thing but grammar has a deep almost subliminal emotional meaning. It establishes relationships.
INCREDIBLE analysis. Well-supported, passionate, and thoughtfully opinionated. I'm obsessed with this!
This is definitely my favorite song from the show, loved this video and your insight into this song!! I got to see Sara as Jenna last month in one of her last shows and it was absolutely incredible. I was floored by her performance of this song, it was so emotional and beautiful. Made it all the more special to me!
Another incredible analysis! A better piano player and vocalist than me, how dare you sir. 😂 when I was listening to the song, I was very interested in how the end of the chorus worked. In particular, how the F feels like the leading tone even though it's the current tonic. I think its heavy repetition in those few bars when the chords are being sustained, coupled with our assumption that we will eventually return to the original key, we interpret the F differently to what it actually is. We hear it as the leading tone and not the tonic because we are hearing a build in the music that is not being reflected in the vocals, so we want the vocals to match the build and rise as well. The key change back to the original key after the chorus does not feel jarring or strange because of the above reasons. It feels natural, logical. The magic of what baking can do if you will. 😉
Lyrically I’ve obsessed over this, but this point of view was AMAZING! Loved it
Great video, it was super cool to hear, but I'm also obsessed with your comforter on your bed. Love it.
I love this song so much! Thanks Mateo!
Love this video, it’s amazing. And, by the way, all of your hand motions, and the way that you speak, remind me so much of Evan Hansen, and it’s just great. I love your singing, and I absolutely loved your performance in basement DEH! This is great!!
I do believe that everything you said is very insightful and interesting, but the way your eyes sparkle while passionately talking about the song analysis makes you so attractive.
I love your enthusiasm!!!! I wanna feel just like that when I start to study music
Okay, I do love Betsy doing the riff, but for the record, Sara did it first.....
Love the analysis!! Please make more of these it’s soooo good😄😍
And I would love anything falsettossss
You are BRILLIANT! I am currently performing this for a graduate program musical theatre class and this has been enlightening!
You’re quite insightful.
This video literally gave me goosebumps! :D
Very good analysis, the mode with the sharp 4th is called Lydian, but I think you know that by now lol music doesn't lie, that's so true :)
This is phenomenal!
I will literally follow you to the ends of the earth for these videos. Not only is this already my favourite musical, and my favourite SONG from this musical, but your musical analysis MIND BLOWS ME!!! And makes me appreciate everything about theatre even more. Thankyou, Thankyou THANK YOU MATEO!!!!!
5:09 The name of the mode is lydian. Nice analysis, btw!
Just saw the tour in Costa Mesa and Christine Dwyer does that “I am” riff flawlessly. So amazing.
I love this so much!!! Your analysis is so in depth:) hard to find people that actually go into the elements of broadway music and explain how the plot is embodied into the piece! Please, if you can, make this a permanent series!!! Introducing other songs you like! I am hooked, definitely will keep up with it if you make it a series!
mateo you are a gem
You should do a live commentary show in Toronto. I'd definitely get few tables ;)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! This is so helpful! I’m going to be doing this song for a recital soon and this really helped me to see what I’m going to be inhabiting!!!! I’m glad I’m not the only one who could talk about this song for 15 minuets straight
Excellent breakdown of the song. Just saw the travelling version last week with Desi Oakley and she is doing an amazing job. She's also doing that raised riff you mention on "Am". In fact there's a video of it on broadway's channel.
I absolutely adore this song I'm singing it for a recital, I begged my instructor to let me. I just love this musical, and Jessie Mueller. It's so good.
i just found this and i love it so much thank you
This is amazing! please make more!
Your enthusiasm is so contagious! Love the soundtrack and the video! Would love to see more like this, keep it up 💪
