Analogue Pocket Review: The Ultimate Game Boy!

Analogue's Pocket is a modernized version of the original Game Boy. The Pocket plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA carriages. It's FPGA-based, meaning there's no emulation. I wanted over a year for this thing, and I think it's a must-have for enthusiasts.

two things I didn't mention: 1) battery life - it's great. you'll get 4-6 hours of straight playtime (depending on brightness). if you don't think that's a lot, try playing a game boy game for 5 hours straight lol 2) price: it's $220

How fast did you get the pre-order? Friend of mine took 7 minutes from the pre-order drop to get his order, he still has to wait until the end of the year before it ships.

The Analogue's approach of "playing it as it" instead of emulating is a key win and a huge advantage on other emulators. bummer that I can't get it anytime soon with them crazy prices and long wait time

I know this is an old comment, but besides cycle accuracy for stuff like very specific glitches (relevant to speedrunners) and the purest of purists, as well as an input delay advantage that will be inperceptable to most (when compared to a good retroarch setup, no android crap), you can get a "pure" setup like that in software emulation devices as well. All you have to do is disable save states, disable rewind, disable fast forward, and configure the display for pixel perfect scaling. Boom, a "pure" experience, focused entirely on the game, just like old days but with better hardware. All I'm saying is, if that's all you want, you don't need to spend $220+.

It is strongly advised to NEVER blow into a cartridge or a system. Blowing into them may seem to make them work better initially, but is doing much more harm in the long run (airborne saliva will stick to it and can cause tarnishing, corrosion, more dust to stick, etc...). Mucky cartridges can also muck-up any consoles they are inserted into, which is a much bigger problem than the dirty cartridge itself. To properly clean a cartridge, I suggest 91% (or higher) Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. Just wet the tip of the swab and rub over the pin connectors until clean.

I love my analogue pocket so much. I've played it every night and probably spent close go 800 bucks on GBA games from my childhood. One issue.....there are screen issues with mine. You can se pixel lines on the left side it looks like maybe it was cracked deep down some how not sure never dropped it. Still it has these weird lines

They always include emulation in a side firmware. That's just so Nintendo and friends don't kill them. Also technically you can that's what the GB Studio pocket format is for. People have already been patching the ROMs to work in that format. It doesn't support link cables so you wouldn't want to play things like main series Pokemon in that format if you want to complete them, but it works just fine for most which have limited to no multiplayer anyway so you probably wouldn't want it.

Great screen, great idea but you can see that the plastic is of poor quality, its texture is wavy in places. this spoils the perception of the entire device. I hope Nintendo will finally release its official version of the classic Game Boy, as it does with previous consoles (game & watch, NES micro) Integrated battery is also a big minus. In my opinion the original Game Boy Color with a modified screen is still a better option.

All GB and GBC and some GBA games use a battery to hold the save (note that though it may appear to be the case the GBA Pokemon games do not - they use their battery to keep track of real time, saving continues to work when it dies, time just doesn't pass anymore). You'll need to replace them to continue saving (or having time pass).

Just a note: it's inaccurate to say that the Pocket does "no emulation", despite Analogue's slick marketing. FPGAs are a form of hardware emulation, as opposed to the software emulation most people associate with the word "emulation", but they aren't any more inherently accurate than software emulation is--it's just that there are certain advantages to FPGA emulation that make it much less costly to attain cycle (i.e., perfect or near-perfect) accuracy. An FPGA is only as accurate as the work and documentation that goes into its code, which is exactly the same case in software emulation. Perhaps the biggest advantage is the fact that because FPGA is a hardware solution, it doesn't need to run everything through a software layer or OS, which means it can output directly to a display with zero added latency. The Pocket apparently has one single frame of added latency due to a difference in the way its panel operates compared to the panels of the original hardware it emulates.

Speak for yourself. I'm more than happy, at nearly 30 years old, to pull out my modded GameBoy Color and trudge through Pokemon Silver again on a 30 minute lunch break. I'm so burnt out on social media. lol The Pocket is cool for sure. But I really fail to see why it'd be worth $220 to have to wait over a year, when I have a real GBC right now (with an aftermarket IPS screen that is larger than the original) that can play everything pre-GBA, and a soft modded PSP that plays most GBA games pretty well via emulation. By the time I actually got my hands on it, I'd have probably lost interest in it already.
