The Analogue Pocket is definitely my new favourite way to play Game Boy games, I can't wait to get the dock too as an easy way to play and record games for the channel! Hopefully by then, the firmware would have been improved as well to address some of the complaints that I have, honestly I think it's the best and most exciting piece of tech that Analogue have produced so far, and I can't wait to see what they make next!
I did a review of their Super NT when that came out a few years ago if you want to see my thoughts on another one of their products!

There's a few things I didn't mention in the review that I want to address, the Pocket does have save states, you can use them by pressing Menu and up / down, they work well on original games but don't work at all with flash carts unfortunately. The menu can be annoying if you want to exit a game after changing settings because pressing it takes you back to where you were, not the first screen, so you have to press B 4 or 5 times to get back first before you can exit the game. If you press the power button quickly it goes into sleep mode, which can be really useful! After playing it more with original carts, the battery life doesn't seem so bad, I keep the brightness around 60% and it lasts quite a while! Thanks for watching! Any other questions, let me know!

Ayyy, cheers for trying out me stuff on there haha. Sucks that one didn't work buuut was great to see Bonesy booted up on there. A lot of the design choices on this thing remind me a lot of the Hyperkin Smartboy phone, and I kinda like the look of the carts popping out the top, GB-game-on-a-GBA style haha. Those cart adapters look damn fine. And at a decent price too. Hell yeah Lynx

Agree on the power and volume buttons. I don’t know who though those were a good idea. I’m also not sure why holding the Analogue can’t double as the Power button, but maybe there’s some function I haven’t used yet that would create a conflict.

Very nice review! Like you, I'd been looking forward to this console since it was announced in 2019, and like you, I also experienced the issue with the R shoulder button being very hard to press. The problem was quite widely reported on Reddit in the first few days, and it was always with the R button for some reason. Around the time you would have been making this video, I was contacting Analogue about the R button, as I too was getting killed in F-Zero. After two full months, I finally received my Pocket back, repaired and functional. The shoulder buttons are awkwardly placed, but at least I can press them. All in all, a great device with a wonderful screen, but the shoulder, power and volume buttons leave something to be desired.

Out of all the reviews I've seen, you're the only one that mentioned the power button flaw. While not a deal breaker, it is definitely something to take into consideration, that being said, I enjoyed your review mate. On a side note, it's a huge shame JetPac DX didn't work. :(

It’s not much of an issue if you keep it docked. You can wake up the device with a controller

It's not really a "flaw". With pressable button you can do sleep and wake. Also this device is significantly more complex than a Game Boy, it needs a graceful shutdown, so with a pressable button hardware can "brace" for power off.

@@FaridAbbasbayli Umm, sir. This is an FPGA unit, not a Raspberry Pi. I would understand if it was a GPi Case we're working with here, but as far as I'm aware, Analogue's products don't have anything like that and function exactly just like a real console would. Even a MiSTER FPGA doesn't need a "safe shutdown."

Great video. I don't think you need to fully power down the system to change games - if you quit the game from the menu you should be able to change cartridges with the unit still on (though worth confirming that in case I'm wrong). Your point still stands though - the physical power button and the startup time is not great. I almost wish you could use sleep mode even without a game running - as a kind of standby mode.

Thank you for this video and review mate. Is the power button not made like that so it doesn't get pressed by accident when in your pocket/backpack etc? But having an option for it would be the best. Being able to choose how many seconds you need to press perhaps. I didnt pre-order this because I wanted to see the reviews first. As a fellow GB collector there is one thing I feel very skeptical about concerning the design. And that is how exposed the cartridges are when inserted. I have many rare and expensive games. And having them in the system while traveling doesnt feel like an option If I dont want them to get scratched etc. Sure it is nice being able to see the label when it's inserted. But at the same time. When gaming you dont see the back of the system. A see-through glass I would prefer better. Is it possible to have a game running, put the system in sleep mode. Remove the cartridge (to put in protector-case) to then re-insert the game and continue when you left of? Or do you need to make a save state? I'm standing between modding a GBP or buying this console. And I mean fully mod the GBP with all the best mods. IPS screens, rechargeable battery, better speaker etc. What I would like about that is you get the original shell with the right looks and feel, the same with buttons. But buying all the mods it does add up and get pretty expensive. You have any opinions on what to choose?

That really looks high end. Im guessing its a bit too expensive for me. Plus I was always a bigger Fan of original Gameboy Advance form. The Gameboy Advance games have got this unique aspect ratio, that actually makes them look decent displayed both at 4/3 or 16/9. I tried them on both types of TVs, and I liked both results, while original Gameboy or Colour games do look quite bad while being stretched. Its nice the console have got an option to stretch them a bit as Well. Also have a happy Christmas! Wishing you lots of New great releases for 2022!

How many games are you away from a full UK GB set? I have an AGS-101 modded original GBA, an actual AGS-101 SP and a GBC with one of those new Q5 LCD screens, so I don’t think I need/want one of these. The only thing that tempts me is the Q5 screen on the GBC mod is a bit finicky. It doesn’t always play games from an everdrive due it needing more power than a standard GB cart, and the GBC d-pad isn’t the best. I would be happy using my GBAs for GB/GBC games but it plays them in quite a small screen. If this thing was cheaper and based in the UK I’d buy it without a second thought, but as always it comes down to cost.
