I have two modded GBCs, a modded GBA, and two RG351Vs. So far, I love them equally. Especially the modded consoles. They bring back the feel and nostalgia of my childhood while giving me the modern conveniences of a backlit higher definition screen. The RG351V os great but requires some tinkering but ultimately is a wonderful console.

Thanks Brandon for covering this - I was one of the unlucky reviewers that did not get an analogue pocket in for review and missed the pre-orders back in 2019. I find it kinda pointless now because I do mod Gameboys, Gameboy colors, pockets and DS lite “neons” and sell them to support my channel because I’m still new (under 1k sub mark) glad you were able to show the viewers many other options as this analogue pocket is unattainable for many and will probably be forced with more delays as the pandemic is still going on- again, thanks for this update - tootles!! 😎🔥👍🏻. - BAN.

As excited as people are for the Analouge Pocket, it feels overpriced to me honestly. The FPGA chip is awesome for accuracy, but way too expensive for it's narrow use case compared to handheld emulators. I bought an Anbernic RG351V last year, and it's been awesome, especially for £100. I'd prefer more power for PSP emulation and was tempted by the Powkiddy A20, but ultimately the build quality and firmware sucks. I'm probably going to be getting a Retroid Pocket 2+ later this year too, and I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for what else comes out this year.

I got an Anbernic RG351 and it was so fun to mess around with that it I decided to pick up a Gameboy color to mod and play real cartridges on. The Analogue Pocket really cool but I have no desire to own one, especially since if you want the really cool features it offers with the dock over original modded hardware or emulators, you're out close to $400 after taxes and shipping. For that price you can get a soldering iron, solder, flux, a silicone desk mat, an old gameboy, all the mods and customizations you'd ever want, PLUS still have enough money left over to buy an excellent handheld emulator.

It runs practically all 32bit and below consoles, N64, PSP, PSX and etc. It also has a very capable video media player app. I have a 1TB type A2 Silicon Power micro sd installed in the roms slot of my 351V. The 1TB micro sd is loaded with my roms library along with video files of complete TV show series and movies. I'd say my Wood Grain 351V is a much better handheld than the Analogue Pocket. I also noticed that a few years back when I preordered my ANBERRNIC 351V, it was around the same time Analogue was shipping out their preorders for the Analogue Pocket. From observing the similar size and features of both the Analogue Pocket and the 351V. I think ANBERNIC created the 351V as their answer to Analogue's Analogue Pocket handheld.

The Analogue Pocket supports ROMs now. WulffDen just recently released a video where he shows how you can run ROMs of many different platforms on the Analogue Pocket by simply running a single .exe file off it, which will update it to the latest official firmware (which allows these other cores to run - its new feature) and install all cores and keep them up-to-date. Simply copy the ROMs to the SD card and play all games natively without any issues or tinkering. It's pretty impressive. I don't have an Analogue Pocket or any other retro gaming device yet, but I'll get an Analogue Pocket because of that. For the second system that you mentioned, I would go with a Steam Deck by Valve. Its screen is the same size as that of a Nintendo Switch OLED (but the screen of Steam Deck is LCD and only the 512 GB edition has an anti-glare screen) and it has enough power to emulate up to PS3, up to Dreamcast, and all Nintendo systems up to (including) Nintendo Switch. It also runs modern PC games natively on either its preinstalled SteamOS (a console-like Linux distro with a compatibility layer to run almost all Windows games) or dual-booted Windows. Dual-booting is supported without having to configure it manually. Supports all PC-compatible accessories, which includes most console gamepads. The Steam Deck is also dockable like the Analogue Pocket and Nintendo Switch.

Btw, the PS Vita runs PSP games natively via its build-in "PSP Player". The New 3DS editions also run DSi, DS, and GBA ROMs natively (requires "homebrew" though). So these two devices are also great options for these platforms if you want to run ROMs without emulation.

I have 2 AGS-101 SP’s (an original and a reshell), 2 GBA Micro’s and a AGS-001 SP. They all work perfectly fine and the batteries hold lots of power even after years of not using at all. Yet I still want an Analogue Pocket for the following reasons; bigger display for GB and GBC games, save states that are especially useful for dead battery games and my Game Gear 'library'. Even though I just have about 20 GG games, it’s such a shame I haven’t been able to play these in over 20 years. Yes, I could run them on an emulator, but meh. I want to be able to use the cartridges. The only reason I haven’t ordered one because I’m still occupied clearing my Gamecube library. Would be a shame to buy one and let it collect dust.

Would love to buy an Analogue Pocket, even with the wait, but the price is just too much. $219.99 plus $50 delivery to Europe and then you're looking at another $80 to $100 import fees and tax. At nearly $400 you're in Steam Deck territory there. All of which would be solved if Analogue could come up with an European shipping solution.

Seriously, just get an Ambernic RG351 variant, the V version is perfect if you like the Gameboy form factor.
