I was hoping it was something besides the pocket file patches that was being reported here. Doesn't cover save states, no rtc, and can't do anything besides GBC and DMG. If it was a true hack we would potentially have GBA, Game Gear, and a couple other systems available

Yeah pretty disappointing clickbait title, honestly without proper hacked firmware this device is pretty pointless if you've already got a GBA and/or GBC with a decent IPS screen. I really wish Analogue weren't so weird about letting people do whatever they want with their hardware...
I'm assuming there's not a more elegant hack on this because the full analogue OS isn't actually out yet. I was hoping it would launch by the time my Q3 order arrives, but who knows.

I like the ratio touch. Makes me want to watch this video on my analogue pocket lol
i really appreciate all the work you put into your ads, most videos where the "talent" does the ad, i just skip past it, but your ads actually add something to your videos. great job seriously
Minor correction/addition, the GBA EverDrive *can* play GB/GBC/NES games but using software emulation. If you want to play GB/GBC games natively you will need to get a GB/GBC EverDrive.
I love your content so much, Bob. You know you're doing a good job when you make me interested in things I didn't even know about
Since my original GBA went toast, I backed up my old stuff to my Retroid, and it has felt absurdly legit...like someone combined with the best of a GBA, PS2, and GameCube into this little fun brick. I had modded my PSP to have that role for ages, but this thing just brought back the nostalgia hard for some reason.
Whilst I respect that the analogue pocket has helped the handheld market a lot, the fact is that a lot of people now want to have their entire collection on hand because you just can now a days. I used to be a purest for video game cartridges/cds/etc but having to move out and fly to and from uni made it clear that having every single game I own constantly with me when travelling was not only not feasible but could also put said games at risk of getting lost and damaged. And given the placement of the cartridge slot on the pocket being right beside the cartridge slot, I wouldnt and cant blame others for not wanting to take games in and out too much or even use the pocket a lot because of that high risk of knocking the cart out. IIRC someone said that the pocket couldn't handle flash carts all too well, idk if a patch fixed that, but couple that, the hack only allowing gba games and the fact its near impossible to get one, I just can't see myself getting one. At least right now. Maybe if I luckily see one in the wild for a decent price or something in the future
Awesome for the community! I’m actually enjoying playing 1-2 games on the go with my pocket. I’m one of those that gets overwhelmed by choice so when I do travel with my Ambernic joint I play 7-8 games for 10 minutes each and then just put it away. It’s a flawed console for sure, but this is one of the nostalgic aspects I actually like and enjoy
This man has no business making his ad breaks so good
I like how the video is in 4:3 “academy” aspect ratio. :)
It looks great in my display case where I leave it. Honestly, I still prefer to reach for my modded IPS actual Gameboys when I want to play Gameboy. Even though they're not 100% stock, they feel more like it.
"I'd reccomend a game boy advance one" FYI when playing gameboy games on a gba with a flashcart it's actualy emulating them rather than using the gba's hardware backwards compatibility. If you want all gameboy games to work and run properly you'll want a gameboy flashcart.
@coopercummings8370
2 жыл бұрын
It is also doing emulation for NES or any other systems you put onto the flash cart, you are just bypassing all the FPGA implementations for those specific systems and instead making it run an emulator that can run on GBA
@InvidiousIgnoramus
2 жыл бұрын
This is also why GB games on a flashcart will actually work in a GB Micro, despite the missing hardware.
Thanks for reminding me and describing it in all detail in the video! Have to try it out for myself. I like how you're showing the MGS cartridge. The headline is quite misleading though, in my opinion. I thought the Pocket had actually been hacked, but this is just a workaround for GB/GBC games I already found quite a while ago. My expectations were higher when I clicked on the video!
This is more of a workaround for GB and GBC games, tbh. No support for the other systems the Analogue Pocket can run is a huuuuge caveat. It's a nice interim solution until a more comprehensive jailbreak comes out, but that's about it.
@OfficialSilentPLAYS
2 жыл бұрын
I'd assume because the Analogue Pocket uses an FPGA to act as a GB/GBC it might take some time, but I don't know enough about the hardware/software to say anything definitive.
@OMorty

@@OfficialSilentPLAYS Yeah, we probably just gotta wait for Analogue to start putting out more firmware updates so hackers can poke around and see how it makes the FPGA reproduce other systems. When that'll be is anyone's giess, though. It's been a long time since the system launched, and they've been oddly silent about updates, as far as I know.

EZ Flash Omega is another good flash cart. It comes with 2 covers that you can swap, so that you can make it flush with a ds lite instead of having it sticking out. I don't know how well that would fit a Analogue Pocket, because I don't have an Analogue Pocket. If anyone has both, I would be interested to know.
Really appreciate your coverage on the retro console scene, thanks dude
For sure want to get an Analogue! Thanks for the GB Operator info!! Finally the years of keeping my old game boy games has FINALLY paid off XD
Wulff‘s videos are the only one where I make it an effort to watch the ad spot because they are just so darn funny. This one definitely didn’t disappoint.

GBA games can not be patched to run via GB Studio, only GB and GBC games, also no RTC so if you plan on playing Silver, Gold, or Crystal you'll have to manually set the time ingame as you see fit.
I love that you made this video in a square-ish aspect ratio
I like this aspect ratio, since I always watch my videos with my phone in portrait, so it just makes the video take up more of my screen.
I literally love that you and Wood actually put time into the sponsored bits. Couple of the only channels I don't FF through :D
I appreciate the effort of doing a 4:3 aspect ratio video when talking about an old console... BUT the GameBoy was a 10:9 screen and the GBA was a 3:2 screen. Not 4:3.

Omg, guess we’re gonna have to stop watching the video and unsubscribe now.
I was so pumped for this thing, I was able to secure one from the very first wave.... But I havn't touched it more than 3 times since I got it. Sometimes it freezes when I swear I didnt even touch the cart in the back at all, but if you do touch the cart, or set the system down, thats gonna be a crash. It is seriously volatile and renders the sysyem useless to me, outside of the dock, which is great, but I really didn't buy it to plan on a tv /monitor. This is I neat solve for now that I might play with, but it looks tedious to hunt down the right versions of everything. I just want them to drop the "real" hack, ya know?

This is definitely more of a novel device. Like if you have this and the Steam deck. You're using the Steam deck. But it doesn't take away from the value of this device. The form factor and aesthetics definitely make this a great product with a unique offering.

The big thing is hardware emulation, it is 1:1 with the original hardware. It is better than any type of software emulation like windows on the steam deck for example.
@RAHelllord
2 жыл бұрын
@@joeystar1043 Not entirely, it is still hardware emulation and has a few bugs and glitches that original hardware doesn't have, or that software emulation on windows and linux fixed ages ago. It is however hands down one of the most gorgeous ways to play them thanks to the screen and the latency is top notch at exactly what the original hardware does. Also the buttons and dpad feel like a good fit for the Gameboy as they're not clicky like modern ones.
Awesome, cannot wait to get my Pocket and do this (hopefully soon, whenever my batch of them ships).
Thanks for making a video about it, I hope this technique will become more popular ;)
Hey Bob! Love your vids, but you might want to be aware there's some whistling coming from your mic. Might just be a bit too much laid onto the mastering/post-process. I don't know much about audio as I just edit video, but since I watch most of these with earbuds I picked up on it. Keep up the good work!
As a business traveler I do take my pocket along with me I do it just like I did it back in the 90's with my original gameboy take a couple of games along the ride retro style
Love the 4:3 aspect ratio. It feels like the first videos that were uploaded to KZread, but with major quality upgrades.
Are there any examples of GB/GBC/GBA games that are noticeably different under hardware emulation vs software? Software emulation is darn good these days, and the devices are a fraction of the cost.
I am on the wait list for the Pocket. It is supposed to ship next year. TBH I am cool with the wait. In the mean time I am just hunting for Physical carts of my nostalgic favorite old games to play. Though I wish I could find a pokemon fire red or Crystal cart I wouldn't have to take out a mortgage to buy.

@@megami215 When looking at the cost of doing the mods I would want to get a machine of similar quality it come out to a similar price. That is assuming I don't botch the mod. I have a nice SP I can play my gameboy game on until I get it or I could play on my epilogue. In fact I keep Tetris DX plugged into my computer for when I am in the mood for a game.
Omggg i forgot how painful the first gen of flashcarts were. Its flasher used the db25 port (parallel/printer) and the memory was soldered in the flashcart. It could also be used to rip as well, all back in the win95/98 days. Even 1st gen gba flashers and carts were the same way.
So does this not work on the other systems the Pocket can support?
I have a modded RetroN 5, and you can also use that to rip ROMs and savefiles (though you need an additional program to convert the save to the common format). Hope they fix the Link Cable and RTC support!
I wouldn't recommend GBA flash drives if you want to play GB or NES. It doesn't use the right resolution for GB games and lots of them don't run right, run slow etc. The Pocket is trying to push higher resolution than the power of it can output for the emulation it uses. My test case is only for the GBA Everdrive from krikzz so maybe others will work ok? But running Pokemon Yellow it is very quickly apparent in the opening cutscene Pikachu saying his own name is laggy af.
@jimmyvau
2 жыл бұрын
It's because the GBA carts are running an emulator on the cart to play those games. They aren't running natively on the Pocket like the GBA games. You need a separate GB specific cart to properly run GB games on the Pocket.
@Bearboy312

I got a gb x3 for gameboy and gameboy color games looks way nicer than when they were running off the gba everdrive
I can't wait to be mine. I'm in Group B which is Q4 2022. I'll probably just use my flash carts for loading roms.
Waiting into 2023 for mine. I bought it for the ability to play original carts like the old days but these days they want too much damn money for them. This method is definitely worth at least a try for me
as an everyday user of the ez flash omega with my ds lite, the gameboy/gbc functionality of the cartridge is handled by an emulator called goomba so it's not technically using the hardware as an actual gameboy color would. I don't have any experience myself using it in conjuction with an analogue pocket but i don't understand why it'd be any different. (also if you're using the custom firmware that i think you're using for the flash cart, the nes is having issues becuase it's also an emulator)
It’s been great having your favorites readily available in gb studio.

I love the aspect Ratio of the video. I like having my device in Portrait when on KZread. It satisfies a need I didn't know existed lol
These aspects ratios drive me crazy 😅. Great video and ad Bob!
Kudos to you for using that aspect ratio
I was in the same boat til I got everdrives for it. Much better for me personally because I’m a fan of the display modes and official support. Plus I have so many different game boys that I want to move my games and saves around easily. The unofficial cores just aren’t as tempting.
Everdrive is old news. If you want a GBA flash cart, these days you want an EZ Flash Omega. They're still a little pricey at $60, but the "Definitive Edition" version not only does real-time clock, but you can copy a rom to the NOR memory and flip a switch on the cart, and the cart will mimic that game to the point where it'll fool DS games that make use of GBA carts in slot B (gen 4 Pokemon pal park stuff for example). It's pretty nice, especially considering how expensive authentic GBA carts in general are getting. I went with a screen-modded GBA instead of getting an Analogue Pocket but it should be compatible if you use the latest firmware.
It would go a long way in spurring my interest if it's possible to convert .pocket files back to .gbc/gba/gb. [Still, an informative and much appreciated video.] One of the things I'm constantly chasing (like chasing the perfect cup of coffee) is the ability to transfers games save different devices. For a while I've been syncing save states from NES emulators between my phone, PC/Mac, and OG Xbox/Wii. It's been nearly a year and my memory is a little fuzzy in this area, but I'm beginning to revisit this in regard to Gameboy.
The B1 code on your Mega Man means: Bad, Ver 1. In Neo-Geo & MAME the [B] either means [Bootleg] (hack) or is the 2nd file in a set. But, in the Game-Boy, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES & Sega libraries the [B1] is "Bad" #1. I uploaded some of these name-suffixes myself, so that you-all would know that the ROM copy sucks. Keep this in mind.
Why not use a flash cart? I think the RZ flash was reported working. Plus you can play NES and Game Gears with that cart using a custom firmware. Edit: 9:00 ez flash is the way to go. Sometimes you can find them for $40

That Noodle Kidoodle name drop brought me back lol.
I thought about getting one of these. But i stuck with the anbernic rg351v. And I love it 😍
I'm not sure why one couldn't just run a flashcart on this device. With something like a GB X7 or GBA X5 mini, you can have access to everything from NES to GBA, RTC, save states, and homebrew games.
Loving the aspect ratio to give a sense of nostalgia to the video.
OK - I did a bad. The first think I did was buy a Everdrive GBA mini cart and throw all my DMC and GBC roms onto it and it seems to work perfectly. I love the AP but I agree - the romance of needing all your carts with you fell down instantly when I wanted to walk around! This would have definitely saved me a few bucks!
Can't wait to try this when I get my Pocket... a year and a half after I ordered it...
So does a flash cart not work with the Analogue Pocket?
Would be cool if I ever got mine. Had it pre-ordered for what feels like years. Same with steam deck and playdate.
Question, do flash/multi carts work for the Analogue Pocket?
Took’em a bit but now at least the vertical platform is valid.
Finally, now I can put Morbius on the Analogue Pocket
There are a couple of programs you can use to patch roms and it's pretty easy although I have had luck Google Searching for a specific system. For this one you will probably need one that makes it a single file so you can then covert it too a .pocket file because a lot of patching programs make 2 files you put in a zip folder also on the emulators you use on your other handheld device you probably need a patching program that makes a single file as well
Did they drop the update that allow you to print GameBoy Camera pictures straight to the SD card yet?
Ima subscribe just for this video. Thanks for the info! I was waiting for something like this too!
This definitely makes it more enticing!
Very cool. Been enjoying my pocket. I’ve noticed since it launched GB games have gone up in price
I've been waiting for this since I first heard about the analog pocket. Now I think it's about time to start thinking about purchasing one lol.
GBA or GaBA SP(that you might have or can easily buy), Flash Cart, and a drop in IPS kit: is just as good if not better depending on if you like the retro aesthetic over the minimalist Pocket look.
I've just been using a GBA EZ Flash, but this might be better for GB/GBC since it wont have to be emulated cartside I *really* wish this worked for TG-16 since the adapter is taking hilariously long to come out
Where do you buy these things? I've tried to look up the anberic handhelds and the sites that pop up are shady AF!
this and my gamecube games are the only items completely fill the screen on my ipad
This will be awesome once I finally get my hands on one of these.
AWSOME! Now I just need to find an Analogue pocket.....
Krikzz, the maker of the everdrive series, has the everdrive gba for $104 on their website. Still a bit pricey but nowhere near that $250 shown in the video. I have one and love it!
@Sepioth

The one he showed was from Amazon. Sellers are taking advantage of the short supply of Everdrives. The shortage of microchips as well as the fact that Everdrives are made and shipped from Ukraine is driving up third party seller prices. BUT Krikzz is still making and selling these devices. It's just a bit slower right now.
With regard to gameplay, what is the benefit of running an everdrive as opposed to the SD card directly?
i got a quesction what is the best ssd for gaming can i go for the 20$ or i need a higher ssd for my pc????
Learning about this ability now may seesm a bit tedious, but it at least give me a reasonable investment to get the Analogue Pocket whenever I possibly can.
i appreciate the funny aspect ratio. My CRT loves it. How about something for the ultrawide beside it?
The 4:3 took me for a surprise there. Great video regardless. Might finally look into this device.
