Ойын-сауық

Let's take a first look at the unique world of kabuki makeup, focusing on the basics, including the oshiroi and mebari, and how every element of cosmetic adds layers of meaning to the presentation of the characters. When I was a child, I would see paintings of Kabuki actors and think "They can't be making such wild expressions in real life!", Until later on I saw a video of Kabuki, and they mix artful makeup with complete and masterful control of their faces. Its amazing! I hope to see it in person someday. ❤

WOW! After time well spent on my part (in endless fascination) watching videos of Kabuki actors applying their makeup, you have come up with a two-part video about it. After learning about how white lead was used in early Kabuki makeup, it is little wonder that some of the actors who used it died young. White lead was used as makeup by royalty and other titled or well-heeled ladies in Europe - the Tudor Queen Elizabeth I caked it on to cover smallpox scars! Not so long ago, I bought sets of Kabuki-themed stickers online from Japan and one of them featured Kumadori - it is fun and educative to learn more about them and be able to identify each role where they are featured. You keep spoiling us, KiD, and thank you for your dedication, attention to detail (which I love) and hard work putting everything together.

I have to ask, where do you get the kabuki videos for all your content? Also love what you do, you have actually given me a great help in writing a story set in Edo Japan, where all the characters look like Kabuki and Noh actors, thank you 🥰

I'm glad these videos are being of some help! Most of the footage comes from the few DVDs released by Shochiku (mainly the Masterpieces of Kabuki Theatre Series, and the Sayonara Koen boxset released after the demolition of the old Kabuki-za), plus many old NHK programs taped and uploaded to KZread by kind souls.
