Hello everyone! I had the pleasure of photographing the makeup of Chizuru-san, an active geisha.
I was very impressed to see up close her elaborate and delicate makeup techniques, including white makeup, mehari, lipstick, eyebrows, eyeliner, and dressing for wigs and kimonos.
I would be happy to share my impressions with you.
Geishas dress up in kimonos and add color to banquets with Japanese dance, singing, and shamisen, but behind the scenes there is a great deal of hard work and preparation.
This video focuses on the "make-up before the ozashiki," but I hope to cover the dance practice and the ozashiki someday, and you can see the whole documentary in the film "Tsuru ni naru", with which I collaborated this time.

As Tanigawa owner Megumi Tanigawa said, a tearoom is a place to relax.

Chizuru's dream is to become a geiko.
One month after Chizuru thought so, she made a decision to quit high school and went to Kyoto.
Although people around her were puzzled by how quickly she made this decision, they respected her will and sent her on her way.
However, her health deteriorated and she gave up on her dream, finding work in her hometown of Osaka, but she could not give up on her dream and knocked on the door of "Tanigawa" to become a geiko again.

My name is Chizuru and I am a Geiko in the Nanchi Osaka. I have loved Japanese culture since I was a child, and when I was in high school I encountered Japanese dance and the shamisen, and became strongly attracted to the world of traditional Japanese performing arts. At that time, my grandmother told me about the existence of red-light districts, and I fell in love with the charm of this world and began to aspire to become a geiko. When I entered the river, I was able to make connections with many people, and I felt that the circle of people was becoming more connected. I feel that this job is rewarding and I am happy that I am able to receive the support of so many people and watch over my growth. By expanding this "circle of people" to more people, I think it is important to continue to carry on the torch of tradition that has led us to this point. I believe that the movie ``Tsuru-ni-naru'' will not only reflect Chizuru's side as a geisha, but also her struggles and true nature as a human being. I would be happy if you could watch me struggle and explore my way of being in the world of traditional performing arts.

I always find these types of videos interesting. I also find it fascinating to watch the view count. After a couple of days, not many people will have watched the video. Yet, if you check again in a month, there may be over 300K views (or more). I don't understand why it takes time for people to find and watch these videos. I'm simply glad they do.

They’re just called Geisha/Geiko/Geigi, Geisha Girls were the names of prostitutes that dressed up and pretended to be them when Americans occupied

So I thought Geisha’s/ maiko didn’t cover the nape of their necks with white foundation. They leave it untouched I thought? So how come she covered hers?

Geisha do, Maiko don't. As the video mentioned, Maiko have a different dress code meant to show off their natural youth/beauty, so that includes showing off their natural hair and some of their skin.

At one point, she called herself Maiko. I have to look it up, but i believe, geishas paint the lines on the back of the neck, but the younger maikos do not. Japanese culture is fascinating but i forget alot of what i have read. Now i have to look it up to be sure !!!!!
