An Interview with Chameleon Academy Bill Strand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Bill Strand’s passion for chameleons started 40 years ago and has only grown. His community outreaches include hosting the award winning Chameleon Academy Podcast (chameleonacademy.com). He has been featured in the UK based Practical Reptile Keeping Magazine and the US based Reptiles Magazine. In all of these outreaches, his goal is to promote educated and naturalistic chameleon husbandry as the conduit for us to become more intimately aware of the world we live in. He also runs the Dragon Strand Chameleon Caging Company (dragonstrand.com) which allows him to create caging that facilitates proper chameleon husbandry. In 2020 he was honored by the Chameleon Forums with the Chameleon Heart Award for contributions to the chameleon community. -- Chameleon Academy Website

I make a 5-foot and 6-foot glass and screen enclosures with several solid designs. In the Mountain West, I find glass best because Rockky likes it way hotter and more moist than I do, so we need glass and a bit of fresh air. That considered, I think my new screen design could be almost as high as you like with short construction time. As a product designer, there are so many options out there to make yourself a Chameleon paradise. Designing is easy. Adapting is easy. Manufacturing a bit harder, the rest I need help with. I think 3D product design could be able to bring cheaper enclosures to the market, which means more owners with this exceptional special friendship can create growth and awareness. Thanks for your videos it took me years to find this on my own.

I thought the interview was informative and fun. Both of you guys exude love and joy when talking about chameleons. What I feel needs a lot more attention is the care and feeding of the insects. The purchasing of fresh veggies to the chopping and changing up to separate gut loading. What do you do with the insects that aren't eaten that day. Do they get dumped back into the appropriate container or frozen? Thanks

  • @NeptunetheChameleon

Glad you enjoyed it! I do have a video on gutloading but I will warn you that it's a very old video lol kzread.info/dash/bejne/oH56uK2eqcnWgqg.html. I remove any insects that aren't eaten and will re-gutload and re-supplement them to offer them the next time I feed my chameleon. I also have this page on my website about gutloading: www.neptunethechameleon.com/gutloading

Great video girl. ❤ To your point on “easy”…that’s exactly what we tell everyone too. Set them up right the first time. Then they can be easier than a dog. Their feeders are harder to care for than they are. 😅 To Bill’s point. Yes listen to your breeder first. We are here to make you successful. We want you to become comfortable with the animal before expanding into more complex setups. We just want to make sure the animal is good first. Those are our babies. We were there when they first opened their eyes. We would never tell you to do something that would hurt them. They are the most important thing to us. Then go wild with the setup if you want too. 💚

Hmm if it continues to be runny than yes. But if you've given him lots of hornworms recently or something that could cause him to be extra hydrated than I wouldn't worry about it.

@@NeptunetheChameleon thank you, I’m going to buy a telescope 🔭 and learn myself but in the meantime I have found an online company that checks reptiles poops for a small fee, one of my vets doesn’t check poops and the other vet I use isn’t in until Thursday and I kind of panic a little bit if my chams get unwell 🤒 better safe than sorry xx
