An Inside Look at Alex Honnold’s Adventure Van | Outside
Спорт
Professional climber and longtime “vanlifer” Alex Honnold gives us a tour through the upgraded 2016 Dodge Ram Promaster that he calls home.
Honnold recently upgraded his living space from a 2002 Ford Econoline E150 to a newer, custom-built 2016 Dodge Ram Promaster - so, of course, we sent photographer Max Whittaker to hang with him in Yosemite and get a peek at his new digs. Built by Honnold’s friend, Mason Earle, and customized with scrap metal from the Black Diamond factory and an etching of El Capitan on the van’s door, the small space houses everything Alex needs for simple yet comfortable day-to-day living. He discusses the pros and cons of life on the road, the joy of simplicity that comes with van living, and his philosophy on daily showering (it might not be as necessary as we think).

I go to work on my road bike( having 2 cars), I'm a welder ( wich is body and mentally demanding) go back home in the bike, shower, eat, then go to the gym. At night, I pee in a bottle just because it's quick and doesn't disturb so much my sleep, and yet, the few who knows that a pee in a bottle think that I'm lazy. It's not lazynes, it's convenient.
pretty sure he kept the pee bottle from the old van

Probably not, climbing strength isn’t the same as squeezing strength. We train to not allow our hands to open, it’s a different muscle group involved in squeezing.
I saw this video while researching vanlife 2 years ago. Before I even knew who Alex Honnold was. I am not a mountain climber. I was just a guy interested in vanlife. And Alex seemed like a really cool laid back dude. I have since discovered how big a deal he is in the climbing community. I even saw him at a Q&A here in NYC for his film Free Solo. I know he doesn’t live full time in a van anymore. He bought a place with his wife. I am really happy for him.

Jesus Christ, have you watched the documentary? Dude’s with it. Everyone who lives outdoors in that way talk a little different, it’s just how it is. Mother Nature rubs off on you a little. Just because he’s not bouncing up and down in front of a camera doesn’t mean he has Down Syndrome and isn’t a perfectly unique, capable human being.
@1ena585
5 жыл бұрын
@@ellw7830 He didn't say Honnold has down syndrome, Asperger's is a mild form of autism. Really don't think that's the case with him though, based on what I've seen of him, he just seems a bit awkard and introverted, that's it.
@ellw7830
5 жыл бұрын
@@1ena585 yeah for sure, I agree. I guess the comment didn't explicitly say they thought he had down syndrome, but they compared him to someone with it. I guess I didn't say Asperger's because one of my best friends throughout elementary school had Asperger's and he was super cool. I really miss him, and using Asperger's as a condemnation just sits especially wrong with me. To your point though, _no_ type of social or learning "disability" is even a condemnation, really. So what if Alex has Asperger's? He's still a really awesome, talented dude, and I'd love to hang out with him. I guess I'm just sick of people taking one look at anyone who acts slightly differently and diagnosing them with a learning disorder. But that's the internet for you, I guess. Johnny Liu Honnold isn't one of the best athletes - not even close. He isn't even considered to be one of the best rock climbers - again Ondra, Migos, etc.... the list of better climbers is actually quite long. Honnold wouldn't even be competitive in a World Cup bouldering or lead climbing event. That is how big the gap is between the elite level and Honnold when it comes to climbing skill. Though Honnold's mental game and ability to manage his emotions during those free solos is very impressive. With respect to what he does outside of climbing, I could care less. I don't know him personally, the specifics of his finances or his charitable contributions.

Walmart was pretty popular just for a night if you wanted to keep going on the highway the next morning but I think they changed their policy, though most won't enforce probably. My choice would be ANY National FOREST (not national Park) which allows dispersed camping. For sleeping in your car it basically means if there's a little pull off on Forest Service Road you can park there. Trail heads can sometimes work but I know there are some National forests that consider those more along the lines of a recreational area which wouldn't technically be allowed. But personally I've done it many times on less hiked trails. Other than that, Truck Stops and Hotel parking lots (slightly frowned upon) but in middle america no one really gives a shit or could tell. Those were my go-to's, hope you manage to make the trip one day!

Totally agree with his outlook on living in a van as opposed to a conventional, "stationary" home. However, I do part company with him about the shower and "nature call" facilities. If I lived in a van, I would need at least a nominally working shower and a traditional "bathroom". If I had that, hell yeah, totally doable. Showering in the morning for me is something that I need to do.
