An Incredible & Emotional Reunion Between Adine & Rhino Orphan, Gertjie

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

#WorldRhinoDay
You might not know it, but before rehabilitating elephant orphans, HERD Founder, Adine Roode dedicated her services to rhino orphans.
herd.org.za/blog/an-incredibl...
Adine ran the rhino rehabilitation programme at HESC (Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre) previously and was part of the rhinos’ rehabilitative journey up until HERD elephant orphanage was built, and shortly after a few of the rhino orphans were released. Adine formed a beautiful bond with a friendly rhino bull, Gertjie, and still has a soft spot for this survivor all these years later.
In May 2014, Gertjie, only three months old, was found next to his mother’s dead body. The Provet Wildlife Services team brought him into the care of HESC where he slowly recuperated and recovered.
In November 2014, Matimba, another orphaned white rhino calf, less than one month old, was rescued, having suffered the same devastating fate as Gertjie. It was evident that his mother and he were enjoying a mud bath together when the attack occurred.
Gertjie and Matimba were introduced in December of that year and a beautiful brotherhood began! The two rhinos become constant companions, along with their trusted sidekick, Lammie, whom you may know as Khanyisa’s companion at HERD elephant orphanage.
Gertjie and Matimba’s extraordinary journeys both started with absolute heartache and sadness, but five-years later continue with hope, pride, love and best of all, freedom.
After five years of rehabilitation and various stages of reintegration, Gertjie and Matimba were successfully released into the wild in July 2019, with an APU unit providing state of the art anti-poaching protection. Rehabilitated, healthy, confident and strong, the two rhino bulls were finally able to sustain themselves and experience life as nature intended. In the wild, rehabilitated rhinos’ chance of procreation is far greater so this always remains the ideal, for the survival of the species.
Along with Gertjie and Matimba, an additional four rhinos who were victims of poaching were taken into the care of HESC, after having had their horns hacked off and being left to die. Adine had an incredible team by her side and was instrumental in rehabilitating these rhino poaching survivors, together with: Saving the Survivors, Johan Marais, Dr Peter Rogers and Gerhard Steenkamp. All six rhinos now live wild and free again, and under the best protection possible.

@@Kenny-yl9pc Adine Roode is the human. She is a found of HERD (the people who have this channel you are watching.) Gertjie and Matimba are the two rhinos in this video. Both were rescued by HERD after their mother was killed for their horn by poachers, who specifically hunt down and murder these creatures to take their horn and sell it.. usually to be ground down and powder and sold as a pseudo-aphrodisiac, an ingredient for 'traditional' medicines, trophies, jewelry, etc. The orphans that don't have horns yet are left to die. Thanks to organizations like HERD, the kill-count is down, but it's still very high (about every 20 hours).

@@donnadees1971 The horn transmits sensations because it is attached. Its akin to you touching your fingernail. While the nail itself has no nerves itself, the tiniest vibration can be felt. With Gertjie in particular, putting the nose to the ground is kind of like a dog asking for pets. But you still have to be very careful as they are still incredibly strong and even the slightest unexpected movement can cause them to startle or panic.. and that's one thing nobody wants.

Adine should feel very proud of herself for the role she played in caring for orphaned rhinos and as a result Gertjie is living the way he should. Nonetheless, it's impossible to feel nonchalant when animals we grow to love have to leave. Adine clearly had a loving bond with Gertjie and from the video, that bond has not broken but has developed into a mutual respect with affection I think. Now this truly brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful reunion. How many people get to visit with a rhino they rehabilitated. Adine. You have the golden touch! He put his nose down in the mud and said "ahhh, rub my nose". And what can we say about Lammie? Another jewel in sheep's clothing. ❤❤❤

Same Rhino? at 0:17 "Gertjie's" ears have triangle shaped cut-outs on both bottom sides. However, "Gertjie" at 8:01 has totally intact ears. Also, "Gertjies" juvenile pics with Lamie also show intact ears. I.D. cuts are done when animals are young- not full grown semi-wild BULLs. What's the trickery?

Wow What an Amazing story about these Rhinos Adine. I commend you. Until he was ready the other Rhino waited patiently and only moved after this Rhino moved. What a bond and caring. But the reality is they are healthy not in captivity and are free in their own natural habitat. That is a win win situation. Commendable Adine. Kudos to you.
