Couple of questions: 1. In an actual game, how do I realise that I need to seek a draw instead of trying to win? 2. How do I see the difference between RC1 and RE2? Does that come with practice?

if u lose your piece for nothing you might seek a draw
nise puzzle! i thought i found some loopholes, but when i went back and checked, they were all covered.

I was about to ask the same question but then realized that when the king moves it's no longer defending the h pawn hence rook b1 is no checkmate
A really peculiar puzzle! I would have needed several magic blueberries to solve it.
@soogers

Assuming your elo is 100 and assuming u meant like 5 blueberries, you would have 2500 elo. If the multiplications didn't stack together, you would be 312,500 elo. (The magic blueberries multiply ELO by 5)

Crazy qeens and rooks is probably the weirdest tactical concept chess has: one of the reasons I'd absolutely hate for the stalemating rule to change (which has been called out for a couple of times). In this case, it shows that planning a deperado spree is necessary at times which is, looking at other games of similar origin just a mind blowing concept. As for the puzzle itself, I got the Kf3 line quite quickly, but seeing the subtleties in the Kf2 line went over my head.

Great analysis
At 2:53 there is a quicker way to draw the game with RG3+ KxF4 and RxA3 but as you said black with best play will play the other move
@ParthkrGarg

yes i thought the same you win the queen but you also loose a rook and black will secure 1 pawn so you wont be able to draw.

@@ParthkrGarg Actually the situation would be the same if Black plays Kf4 at 2:57. I think it's a draw because black won't make progress after securing the pawn.

@@ParthkrGarg easy draw from sure not even need to watch endgame tablebase the black have to lose the h2 pawn next move, and the H pawn was full guard from king.
Ok, I heard about this case. It's named "Frantic rook" 😅
although its pretty hard to do so in a game this is a good example as to why doubling up pawns is bad (especially at the edge of the board)

This is an incredible puzzle. Which rooks should be moved which checks you should delivery are the main ideas of this puzzle! If you move the wrong rook or wrong check, you lose.
Don't you love it when there's a crucial h2 pawn from your enemy that you want DEFENDED and every move you keep sacrificing your ROOOOOOOOK just to keep yourself (as the king) trapped?

I got to do something similar in a tournament game. I blundered early on, and my opponent swarmed in, surrounding my king and taking most of my pieces. The fun (for me, playing Black) begins with the position 8/7k/4R3/2N1B3/1P4R1/2PP3P/r1K2P1P/8 . White blundered with 43. Kd1?? Rd2+ 44. Ke1 Re2+ and I keep my rook on the second rank, checking. (I capture the pawn at f2.) When I got to 48. ... Rg2+ (White king on g1) 49. Kh1 Rg1+ (not Rxh2, because Bxh2 releases the stalemate) and no matter how White captures the rook, I'm stalemated.
The stalemate wasn’t exactly the only trick white could use to draw. It could also trade the rook for the queen if the black king was far enough. Then the white king could take the two pawns and it would again be a draw.
@virgodem
Жыл бұрын
Also at 2:10, if you use the left rook first to fork the queen and king, with the intention of getting black to take with king and skewering to take the queen, black will simply take with the queen.
@aaronscott7467
10 ай бұрын
If the black king ever got too far at the end it's actually a win for white because you can checkmate with just a king and a rook
5:35 rook e5 also makes a stalemate right after queen takes
INCREDIBLE!
Now that was a crazy puzzle
anyone notice the exact same position is on the board in the background?
this type of chess puzzles makes my mind bow🤯
Oh yeah a great puzzle from Chess Vibes 👍
this one was really good, well done
At 3:03 when you illustrate e3 you can come down and check with g3 and once the kings moves out of the way the queen falls.
Hi nelson love your vids!
Kf3 line, if black leaves the queen hanging for the second rook attack (fork): that option was not explored. Stockfish is disappointed. It has many potential if you are not thinking as a human.
Me getting deja vu:
5:59 but nelson you can go on c file for couple of moves and keep checking with your rook and keep sacing it so it cant go under the queen
So amazing!! 🤯
The funny thing I got the first couple moves right despite only being a lowly 2000 player (and waaaay lousier at fast time controls).
i paused at 0:09 and i think you give up the rooks so you can draw.
The beauty of Chess !.
A bit like finding a needle in a hay stack for me.
4:13 What if Black continue moving the King? Then White play Rook to e1 or Rook to e2!!!
I thought it was hopeless but Nelson, you tricked me!😂❤💭
You never showed why the Queen pinned due to the king while on row 2 also leads to a draw. Say the king moves. Rook takes queen, king takes rook, king takes pawn, king moves, king takes other pawn .. two kings only stalemate.
2:50 What about Rg3+, skewering the queen?
Incredible puzzle 🧩

alternate title: how can white farm brilliant moves?
Could you still get a draw after check on E2 by taking the pawn with the rook and queen can’t take bcuz she and the last pawn would be captured
Nice puzzle
Ay 2:00 Kxp is pretty good
I looked at the thumbnail for 5 minutes. Just find a way to sac the rooks. Rf3 obviously because black is forced to take that, but idk how to sac the other one before checkmate.
Great video. There is no way I would find it in a real game.
0:21 F3 isn't actually a threat, since white can take back with the rook and check, buying white some time.
It's not the only way to draw cuz u can also do this backwards with rd3 forking queen and king forcing capture then after qxd3 another forced move with rf3 and then takes with king to f3 and making it stalemate

Oh I'm actually right if you sacrifice the rooks in the third move u will only have the king making it stalemate cuz the king has no moves yeah I'm great cuz I saw this
great and cool
I was thinking e1c1 c2c1 stalemate, but black can run.
Black can't checkmate in Qf3, because the rook captured the Queen. 0:18
I thought you would address the case when you fork the queen and king with the white rook, but instead of taking the rook, black lets you take the queen. They still have another rook and the white king is trapped. Perhaps it's trivial but I think we have homework.
@peterhawes9680

I noticed that possibility but if you take the queen, the black rook gives check but Kxh2 is available and you draw easily

King and rook vs King and rook and (multiple) rook's pawn is a draw when the king blocks the promoting square.
RF4. Re4
Why at 2:56 King F2 doesn't work?
Rg7, Kf3, Rd3, Qxd3, Rg3 But I'm not sure about Kf2
In 2:52 why can’t we just skewer the back king and take the queen?
What if black plays kc2 after rd7+? Edit: figured it out. Re2+. If black king stays on c file, check with rook on e file, if black king goes to b file, check with rook on d file. Black king can't reach a1 or a2.
If Rook on f7 was on e7 its too easy but this tricked me . Like always stay sharp, teach smart and take care !! (Ref:Nelson)
All these stalemate shenanigans are soo boring! I really wish chess had the same "skip" rule as Go, so that any player can skip turns, and if both players skip, well, in chess that would be a draw and in go it's the end and start of points counting.
Even though I am a 1400 player but I still manages to do all of it right! IT'S NOT LUCK!! It's about deep calculating that I made.
On the queen skewer, cant you just sack the queen and checkmate with the rook if they take it?
@Darthrevan333

Bro if black king steps out of the way and white rook takes the queen there is rook b1 and the game is simply over for white.
