'An icon that was respected' - Martin Tyler pays tribute to Gianluca Vialli
Спорт
Sky Sports football commentator Martin Tyler says Vialli was an icon, particularly among the players he played alongside, and that respect translated into his years as a coach and manager.
He said: "He had the character to deal with difficulties. He was so much an icon for players [at Chelsea], most of whom had played with him.
"They respected him and really cared about him so much. He was the sort of guy you would really go into battle for - the trophies won proved that."
Gianluca Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, has died aged 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Vialli was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 and then for a second time in 2021, shortly after Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.
He left his role with Italy in December, citing his need to undergo treatment for the disease.

Who still remembers Zola's back heel 20 year ago?? Goals like that wouldn't have been seen without Vialli bringing his mates with him to English football.... Classic memory's R, Di Matteo FA cup final goal against middlesbrough 😎
He conducted himself as a gentlemen off the field, and played like a fan in the terraces on it. Thank You for everything Gianluca❤
As a young teenager blasted onto our irish tv's was Italian football with Gianluca at the helm for Sampdoria...Played football like he was in the park...movement, smiles...HE LOVED FOOTBALL AND FOOTBALL LOVED HIM....A legend...please bow in your own time Sir while we applaud your magnificence 🇮🇪

Out of all the goals that stick in my mind throughout 20 years of football 5 goals won't leave my mind, Beckham half way line, tony Yeboah, Zola back heel, D,Matteo fa cup final goal and Rooney's first goal for Everton....

Well said . A genius and gentleman of football. RIP
As was Vialli, Martin is pure class and a true gentleman.
Anyone who watched the Prem in the 90s knows G Vialli is a real legend!!! What a player!! You will be missed. Prayers to his family🙌
I was fortunate enough to have met this great man. He was a gentleman. God bless you Gianluca. A real role model as to how anyone, regardless of whether or not they are famous, should conduct themselves.
I'd like to see a permanent memorial at The Bridge. Luca is an absolute giant in the history of Chelsea. Gutted.
He is the reason I'm a Chelsea fan. God bless.
Chelsea were everyone’s 2nd favourite team during the 90s and Vialli was a massive reason for this. RIP an absolute legend and pioneer of the modern game
Arsenal fan, but what a great player and man. You lucked out getting him Chelsea. Feeling blue. Much respect.
I still remember vaguely as a little kid that partnership with Ravanelli
Growing up in the 90s I remember watching Vialli he was always a special talent. R.I.P
As a long Watford fan. He will be missed and loved by all of us. Rip. We will see you again.
Souness always spoke of how good a man Vialli was, god bless him.. Absolutely gutted to hear the news, came over near the end of his career but what a player he was in the Premiership, RIP Gianluca..
RIP Gianluca - Always a class act
Seeing him together with Ray Wilkins in this clip, oh man.. :"(
Spurs fan here. Just want to say that the premier league was blessed when he joined Chelsea, as he bought so much to our game. RIP, huge respect 🙏
Sad day for everybody who knew this great human. What a dignify persona.. iconic ..respect. Rest In Peace Gianluca ❤
The result from last night's game at home to Man City and anything else is irrelevant right now. This really, really hurts. What a wonderful, incredible giant of not just the game, but away from football. VIALLI was one of the very best ever No.9 forwards in the history of Chelsea. An absolute pro who literally gave absolutely everything for the club. The Super Cup, the FA Cups, The League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners Cup we even won in his 18 months in the dugout, etc. I don't know what else to say other than I'm absolutely devastated and upset. This wonderful figure will be sorely missed by not just everyone connected to Chelsea and the rest of the world, but 🇮🇹 too. Once a Blue, Forever a Blue. Rest in Peace Gianluca Vialli.
Great honorable intelligent kind man. Coming from privileged family was so humble and decent. Great footballer. Respect! Sad news.
R.I.P Gianluca utmost respect from a Leeds United 🦚🇮🇨 supporter whom I had the privilege of seeing him play class act a leader of men who's class was special when player's just started coming in from abroad. At the time we where gifted of seeing a different class of player seldom seen on these shores for the first time. I am in bits but will remember Gianluca for ever respect 👏 gone never forgotten 🙏🏐🕊️🤍💛💙
He's one of the reasons I got hooked on Italian football in the early 90s when channel 4 used to play a live game on a Sunday He was always highlighted as one to watch his game play reminds me of Shearer, very dangerous striker, Newcastle would've won the league easy if we had him with shearer 100% RiP Luca condolences to family & friends ❤

Don't do drugs kids 1998 "Zeman has expressed concern about the long-term health implications of pharmaceutical abuse in the game. In the Italian weekly L'Espresso, Zeman was asked if it was true he had been "surprised" by the "muscular explosion of certain Juventus players". He replied: "My amazement starts with Gianluca Vialli and goes all the way to Alessandro Del Piero."
