'He made Serie A special' - James Richardson pays tribute to Gianluca Vialli
Спорт
Journalist and former Football Italia host James Richardson joined Sky Sports News to pay tribute to Gianluca Vialli.
Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, has died aged 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Vialli was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 and then for a second time in 2021, shortly after Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.
He left his role with Italy in December, citing his need to undergo treatment for the disease.

The intro to football Italia. The great players that were in that league at the time. God I loved that show.
There was a segment on Gazzetta Football Italia where James visited Gianluca to present him with an award. and Gianluca got involved in the fun of what the show was. That would never happen in today's game. What a man Vialli was. The apex of what a gentleman can be. James is an absolute Rolls-Royce of a broadcaster. Rest in peace, Gianluca.

Loved the show. Loved the nineties.
James Richardson stands as the best football presenter I’ve ever seen. His knowledge and wit is beyond parallel in the game and his contribution to football in the 90s and to the present day ought to be recognised. Gazzetta on. Saturday, Football Italia on a Sunday when the Eastenders Omnibus was on the other side…Gullit, Gascgoine, Mancini, Baresi, Maldini, Signori, Batistuata, BAGGIO…Platt, Ince, Lombardo…Ronaldo….I could go on and on with names…it was such a special time 🕰️ with wonderful memories. Anyone who watched it fell in love with Italian football ⚽️ 🇮🇹 and instantly became a cultured fan far beyond any other types of supporter. To watch the Italian game was to dine at the top table of World football and indeed culture. God bless you Gianluca Vialli. What a legend you were 🙏

Iconic show
Richardson's show was better than anything Sky have ever made. It had everything.
James is a class act.
So glad to hear from James Richardson, It was thanks to him and Football Italia that I discovered Serie A and wonderful players like Gianluca Vialli, A very sad day but it's been great hearing all the beautiful things so many have said, Thank You for everything Gianluca♥️
Vialli's death is really sad for me because he was one of the iconic people of my childhood. I was a huge fan of Football Italia on Channel 4 and Vialli was one of the best players at the time. He always stood out because of his bald head which wasn't fashionable in those days. Vialli always scored important goals in tough games. I'm an Arsenal fan but Chelsea was my 2nd team in the late 90's because of the Serie A players they had. Many people forget how good Chelsea were back then. They were exciting to watch and Vialli was a big part of that. RIP Gianluca Vialli.

@@ShutThePuck LoL. Today it would never happen. But back then Italian football was such a big part of my life I couldn't help it. Gazzetta Football Italia is the best football show of all time. We had Serie A fantasy football league at school. We would read through the Football Italia magazines. Gabriel Batistuta cost me 7 Million. Those were the days.

The blue Juventus kappa top with the yellow stars on the top of the sleeves, belongs to Vialli & his champions league triumph. RIP legend of a player but more the man, what a man!

RIP Luca Vialli from an Arsenal fan, Gazzetta football italia on Saturday morning was religious for me, thank you James Richardson
give james his job back, with football italia again. RIP Luca
Loved watching James eating a knickerblocker glory whilst reviewing the Italian papers on Gazetta Football Italia on a Saturday morning. Watching the games on a Sunday afternoon after Des Walker went to Sampdoria and Gazza went to Lazio, introduced me to Serie A and players such as Beppe Signori, Gianfranco Zola and the great Vialli. RIP Gianluca ⚽️💔🇮🇹
R.I.P Gianluca Vialli, not only a great Footballer but an even greater Man n Person. Sadly missed but never forgotten. I loved Watching Italian Football on Channel 4 with Richardson, it was such a special time.
James Richardson showing absolute class here. Football Italia on C4 was truly one of the finest formats of football coverage on GB TV. Total halcyon days and Luca Vialli instrumental in the glory years of Sampdoria. RIP Luca ✝️❤️
Good job from the Sky presenter, prompted and got heartfelt response from James Richardson.
Live football was such a rarity in those days. Remarkable to think that top-flight Italian football was shown live, for free, on terrestrial television. I remember watching it in my late teens, often with a crucifying hangover. If my memory serves me well there was also a highlights package. Rest in peace to a truly wonderful human being.
im glad they got the best on to talk about the best ,thankyou to james and gianluca it was a privilidge to watch you from a united fan
So nice they got James on, those of us of a certain age only know a generation of Italian players like Vialli, Mancini, Lombardo and tens more because of Gazetta. Fantastic programme on C4.
James Richardson brilliant presenter Italian football on channel 4 Gazza, Baggio, Giannini, Van Basten, Matthaus, Maradona, and Vialli, and many more brilliant days. Rip Vialli fantastic footballer.
I always remember I always remember as a child, tuning into Football Italia on Saturday mornings, Channel 4, being amazed by some of his goals. He was the OG when it came to scoring spectacular overhead kicks. He also seemed like a true gent when he came over the England. RIP x
I am an Arsenal fan but I loved Vialli, I always remember the incredible 4-2 game against Liverpool in the FA Cup and going crazy when Vialli scored. What I loved most about him was he always played football the best way... with a smile on his face.

As a Italian Gunner supporter, I agree with you.
Thank you James Richardson for this wonderful tribute to Gianluca Vialli one of the greatest Italian footballers of all time. It was Football Italia that got me to love Calcio following ITALIA 90. Vialli was an incredible footballer at Sampdoria and then at Juventus where he teamed up with Roberto Baggio, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Conte, Angela Di Livio, Angelo Peruzzi... all great players. Then he set alight the Premier League. Star quality, joy to watch and listen to. Topped it off last summer with a great champions of Europe win. RIP Gianluca Vialli 🇮🇹
Italian football on channel 4 growing up was fantastic
James is a true Legend
Such devastating news. I'm still in shock.
Italian football was epic in the 90s and football Italia on channel 4 is probably the best football show ever televised to this day. The teams, the players, the way it was always sunny and James Richardsons funny comments, reviews and interviews. Back when football wasn’t on every day of the week. Vialli always seemed like a great guy and he was a brilliant player among many at that time in serie A.
I'm very proud of my Italian heritage, and I was made up when my team chelsea started to attract all these serie a legends . For me, they didn't get any classier than gianluca vialli, who will live with me until my dying day. Sweet dreams gianluca & thank you for the memories.
The world needs more James Richardson.
Bring it back Ch.4, or anyone else. ❤⚽🙏📺
Loved Gazetta!!!Highlight of a weekend growing up in the uk as a kid. Vialli was so humorous too wenever on the show. Truly a great of the game. RIP.
Great tribute to this Legend. RIP Gianluca
Football Italia on CH4 on Saturday mornings in the early 1990s with James as host was primetime viewing for me growing up. Fond memories of this time come flooding back, but I'll miss Gianluca Vialli even more as the powerhouse footballer and sparkling smile. From a Man Utd fan, RIP Legend ✝️
Very sad news about Vialli. I use to watch Football Italia every Sunday because my dad abd brother were glued to the TV.
Couldn’t believe it when I just read about it. Went straight to find James Richardson’s words, as there’s no one who has ever talked about the crossover between football and the bigger picture better imho. RIP to a great man - my fave player from when I started watching football Italia
Great to see again, even with this sad circumstance of Vialli`s passing James Richardson.
Lovely interview. Gianluca is a huge loss to anyone that knew him. And it feels like a national loss to Italians. Sincerest condolences to his family. God needed one of his angels back.
So sad, may his soul rest in eternal peace
Sitting on the couch with my younger brother watching you play in seria A in the 90s never seen footballers so upset says alot about the man ♥️
a gentleman, a giant ,a legend what more can you say about the man but sorely missed & hurts to say goodbye
Loved watching James presenting serie a.
Was great show on tv , best thing for serie a . Grew up watching it in Ireland , the players and the teams and the commentary , it helped make the premier league what it is today . Was a cool looking player too ,
Gazzetta Football Italia was the best football programme ever - watched every single episode. James was at his brilliant best presenting that programme.
RIP great this man
Jimbo still the wittiest and most eloquent man in punditry by far and you can see how much of an effect Vialli's death had on him here
This makes me very sad. Great player. Remember him playing against us in those Makita pre season tournaments for Sampdoria. RIP Luca..
Miss the Sundays! Luca absolute legend phenomenal player Rip luca gone to soon❤
Absolutely knew where the goal was, Luca Vialli and Mancini were lethal together at Samp for sure
As a child I used to think vialli and ravenelli were best friends. Both class, together amazing
I spent my teenage years studying Italian football and Luca vialli was one of the most intelligent forwards at the time.
Well done James.
Never forget gazzetta football Italia and vialli of course was so hyped when i heard it was going to be coming on channel 4 and witnessed that amazing first game sampdoria 3 lazio 3 was hooked since then , rip gianluca
What a tribute, thank you Jimbo
Nice to see James was a brilliant show in the late 80s 90s funny too
Imagine mancini now. First mihajlovic and one week.later another brother vialli ... rip
R.I.P Gianluca. You gave many football fans of clubs worldwide with your amazing personality, skill AND goal scoring. Your aura was of a true true Gentleman
Because of James richardson in my childhood i got to see R9 George Weah and i still havnt seen any better players to this day
James Richardson the GOAT
Well said James and RIP Gianluca. Gone way too early.
Vialli was a beast on and and off the field. A great athlete and gentleman!
I grew up watching Vialli playing week in week our for my team Juventus. What a fantastic player he was
Football Italia was a huge part of my childhood football experience, it introduced us all to Vialli, he was the first big star to come over when he signed from Chelsea. The tributes across the board for him over the last couple of days are testament to the kind of person he was. As tough as it was for us to lose the Euros final it was so heartwarming to see Vialli and Mancini celebrating together considering what we knew about Vialli's illness. An immense impact on so many people and the game as a whole x
Loved Gazzetta Football and JR. When I lived in Europe, I went to Rome twice to watch matches due to the love of Italian Football JR instilled. How Lineker is allowed to steal a living off the licence fee payer and JR has never had a mainstream gig is baffling!
Thank you Gianluca for having being a truly excellent travel mate for a while for a small supporter of Sampdoria...unforgettable indeed. Rest in Peace Gianluca.
Yes, he was Italy's leader in 1986-1990 years.
Rest in peace Gianni 🙏🏿🕊️
Beautiful words for a wonderful man. R.I.P. Gianluca 🔵⚪️🔴
A beautiful tribute.
sad news on a about Gianluca Vialli I a Man Utd fan but i liked Vialli a lot Great player and a lovely man thinking of him and is family RIP Vialli
Brought me my fondest memories as a juve fan when the won the European cup in 96. Rip legend
I loved football Italia RIP Gianluca
Will always remember the man
One of the great captains of all time lead by example and Juventus haven’t won a champions league since
He was a really special footballer and he always seemed to have one eye on a bigger picture. If anyone lived by the Kipling axiom in “If” then surely it was Vialli.
Bring back Football Italia!
AC Jimbo GOAT. RIP Gianluca
Jimbo 🤩
That Juventus team which beat Rangers 8-1 on aggregate was the best I’ve ever seen in football.
I support Arsenal but feel very sad. I remember one match on sky and he was player manager. He brought himself on and scored some goals lol
I remember the segments when he always had a newspaper and Ice cream sundae on the table which he never touched!

So unfortunate, we commiserate with the bereaved family

Opposition fans liked him even though he was brilliant. That's very rare in football.
