Gary's the best at this

As a Chelsea fan who idolised Lamps growing up, it is really nice to see him open up about his time at Chelsea. There was such a buzz during his first season managing the club; seeing the likes of Mount, James and Tammy (who’d all been playing championship football the season prior) do so well brought a different excitement to a new signing at the time. Frank deserves some credit for the CL. Haters will say otherwise, but the realists know it’s true. The signings he helped make were absolutely phenomenal, one of the best recruitment periods I’ve seen for a while at Chelsea. This alongside the energy of the chelsea youth really made us look like a force when things clicked. He got top 4 and an FA Cup final with a transfer ban and without Eden hazard who’d carried us for years. (People really seem to downplay the magnitude of losing him just because he’s not done well at Madrid). He was also really unlucky in the super cup final (first game) losing on pens against CL champions Liverpool. He built some strong foundations that will help the club for years to come. It just wasn’t meant to be. Maybe one he’ll come back, who knows. There’s no shame in getting sacked, especially at Chelsea! 😂 Best of luck to him - absolute legend.

Thank you. I totally agree with you. People seem to forget what he had to deal with in his first season as a manager at Chelsea. I think he did a great job. Chelsea is just very impatient with their managers and of course at a top 4 club the pressure is always high, but when you try to build up a new, a younger team, it needs time and I think Chelsea should have given him that. However, now he is at Everton and I support him to have the most possible success there.

Great point about the downplaying of hazards departure. And I agree that hazard flopping at Madrid probably had a lot to do with that, if he'd been bangin in the goals and assists then it would have been spoke about more. Regardless tho, a massive transition for Chelsea losing his attacking contribution and Lampard imo didn't get the credit he deserved for making that transition seamless. Currently struggling with Everton but I can see Lampard doing well in management, a good communicator with passion for the game and experience of working under some of the best in the business.

My brother and I are United fans but have huge respect for Frank. Incidentally, I have a funny story to tell.. My brother used to work at Heathrow Airport and Frank Lampard came through with the Chelsea team and my brother got chatting to Frank, after chatting with Frank for a short while my brother rang me and said "chat to Frank Lampard". All of a sudden there I was chatting to him and the conversation must have lasted only about 15-20 seconds but I'll never forget it. He's such a nice guy with so much humility; he was obviously busy but was still kind enough to have a quick conversation with me. Top man.

As a Liverpool fan, I have nothing but admiration for Frank. Scoring 211 goals as a midfielder is absolutely outrageous.

Unfortunately, in my culture we are taught to mourn the death of a person for months, if not years.

The champions league was a club effort. Frank being part of the club, he deserves a portion of the credit. Werner stretched the defence, Mount provides the pass and Havertz finishes the goal. All players that probably wouldn't be playing at the club if it wasn't for Frank.

Speaking as a Derby fan, Frank was absolutely immense from day one. Great football, fantastic bloke and built a great relationship with the fans. Devastated with me when he left. I said it may be too early for him and wish he'd stayed for another year or two with us. Wishing him all the best

@@spig3547 You could always look into the details of the case to find we didn't actually cheat and the EFL signed off and agreed agreed everything we did, only to then backtrack 2 years later after Middlesbroughs chairman objected. We were then subsequently punished for something that was approved by independent accountants and the EFL. After that, an independent panel found us innocent TWICE, after two EFL appeals and only in the 3rd appeal for the same thing did they apportion us a tiny bit of blame. So basically the EFL approved everything we did before we did it. When they changed their minds, an independent panel found us innocent twice and yet we're still being punished. There are teams who have cheated the system more than us and got promoted and are now out of reach of the EFL.

You do these interviews so well Gary, never talking over your guests and Frank is a legend - what an honest, really open, very likeable guy. I would love Frank back at City, working alongside Pep for the next two seasons and then taking the hot seat when he moves on. Frank was / is a good manager and with time will become a world class manager.

@@michaelgreen5857 Pretty different players though, Frank scored over 200 goals for Chelsea from midfield, in terms of goal scoring midfielders no one comes close, but also calling him a goal scoring midfielder is kind of unfair due to how well rounded his game was he has some of the most assists ever in the league and his defensive work was also class.

Did a great job at Chelsea as manager, with the resources he had, especially bringing through a lot of youngsters!

Quality man and human being first off. Lampard is a class act off and on the pitch and as a fan of another club it is IMPOSSIBLE to not appreciate the way he approached the game as a player and as a manager. Hopefully he’ll get another appointment and get to prove more of what he can do on the touch line.

Gotta love The Overlap, love these "laid back" interviews, both funny and informative and its good to see how all of these great footballers as who they are outside the pitch aswell.

Ik Lampard gets alot of credit for bringing through Mason Mount, but his biggest gift to Chelsea was trusting in Reece James. No other manager ITW would have come in to a club and replaced the captain with a 19 year old kid. Now James is one of the best RB/RWb in the world!!

The respect that these two have for each other is so clear and who can blame them? At their peak they were two of the greatest players in the world. Great role models too. Full respect.

I grew up watching the likes of Scholesy, Stevie G and Lamps playing in PL for so long and at top level all the time. As a United fan I always had big admiration for Lampard. He was a great player for Chelsea & he just seems like a really good guy. I’m glad he hot the chance to manage Chelsea & to be fair he did a decent job.

Hardly an abject and dismal failure squire.

City fan here. Great show Gary. Frank was fantastic at city a credit to his profession and real football legend.

I’d like to say a big thanks to Lampard, he turned Chelsea around, we were slowly sliding due to shit transfers and an aging squad until he came in and brought in loads of very good young players like Reece James and Mason Mount from the academy and others the next season who proved inspired signings like Havertz and Werner, he got us top 4 when that’s where we were the year before but he had stayed at the same position with a transfer ban and losing the player that carried Sarris team on his back all season, there’s no way we would have won the Champions League and been as good as we are now without Franks influence

Frank Lampard went from management difficulty level of 5 out of 10 to 10 out of 10 straight away. He needed a lot of time and experience under his own belt to move up to such a level and I felt that he let his passion dictate his decision making rather than being calculative and controlled.

Managerial experience doesn't help you when things are going well, but when things are going wrong. Maybe he felt he couldn't turn the job down but the stamford bridge job is a huge one. I hope for his sake he realised how big a job it is and it was never going to end well. Like Roy Keane taking the old trafford job, never going to end well.

@@dbash2004 he knew that though. He took it because it was possibly a once in a lifetime chance. Eventhough he's a legend the Chelsea job is reserved for the best managers in the world. The transfer ban combined with the loss of Eden was a one off situation in which they'd actually consider him and he took it. He knew the expectations were much lower than usual and surpassed them in his first season. But when the expectations returned to normal in his second season he wasn't able to match them. @@dbash2004 it wasn’t down to lampard expectations. Management is a 50-50 job, it’s so based on luck and being the right person at the right time , at the right club and with the right players, I mean we’ve sacked managers like jose, ancelloti, Conte. Will you say those guys are terrible managers or inexperienced? I feel like people are being dismissive of lampard to attribute it to him lacking the managing skill or experience. Sometimes the players just don’t fit to the idea/tactics of a manager.

As a Aberystwyth fan I can honestly say I don’t have a bad word to say about Lampard. Regardless of the rivalry between us and Arsenal, the invincibles will probably never be matched

Frank wasn't a nightmare, he took a big challenge, put his neck on the line during a challenging period for the club and will look back with regret that he couldn't take them to a level of success but done a respectable job for a relatively young manager at his home club who are one of the most famous in the world! Gary just had a nightmare

Wow … what an interview .. Frank is a great conversation very open .. this literally feels like 2 old mates having a catch up down the pub after a few years from seeing each other

This was absolutely fantastic. Great to be taken through that emotional trip with our legend Super Frank. I wish him the best and it would be great to see him associated with the club again in some way.

When frank was sacked, the heartbreak was mutual. Chelsea fans love Lampard no matter what but understood the reality that Frank was not ready to take Chelsea to the next level.

@@harryskelton4662 exactly, Lamps was a big part of Chelsea ucl title, he rebuilded the team and got the classification for the champions with a transfer ban and a bunch of youngstersn, then he signed a all players that help to win the title including the one who scored the title goal, tuchel brought his experience and quiality to perfected what lamps started

Frank seems like a really decent bloke, comes across so well during this. Can't wait to see him in management again soon (Lincoln City would take you I'm sure, come and help us out!)

This is an incredible interview. Definitely gives some insight to the thought process behind Frank's moves. Felt reasonably honest too without agendas.

Genuinely one of the best and most transparent footie chats I've seen/heard. Both Frank and Gary made that a joy to watch. And coming from a Leeds fan that's saying something. Superb.

Gary, we need to talk. I think we can bring the nation together through our dialogue. I'm a carpenter and father of 3 and not interested in fame or money. However, I do believe the I can give you something as a casual football supporter that will help us all as a multicultural nation on a global stage. Such a good interview this is Gary. Loved all of your interviews with all the chaps. Very satisfied to listen to Lamps how he feels after he left us. Such an intelligent guy. Hope he comes back to management soonest.

I'm a huge United fan and Frank was at the heart of our biggest rival for years, so I cannot help but be struck by the respect and yes, affection these two warriors share in this interview. Incredibly good questions-disarmingly candid answers; spot on Gary--absolutely brilliant--both of you!!

Never heard any player manager or supporter say a bad word about frank lampard always come across as down to earth genuine humble man + I read a few times always signs lots autographs for fans n has photos taken with them

Can’t dislike these two, stalwarts of the best premiership years who respect those before them and are always fair to the new breed. Even through club loyalties. Would love to see Frank get a proper shot at a club again.

If you had to choose a person to represent the personification of the Premier League it would be Lampard. He really is top class player, just brilliant. Never flashy just super professional. He got angry a couple of times but nobody going to hold that against him, he has a good nature to him.

@@clivet3252 I don't think playing in a midfield 2, ever brought the best out of Gerrard. Even when he played in a midfield 2 under Gerrard Houllier, he performed well when he played alongside holding midfielders such as Dietmar Hamann and Gary McCallister or Xabi Alonso who sat back, guided him and allowed him the freedom to play in a box to box role. He was best suited in a midfield 3 of a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-2 in an advanced role with the freedom to drift to the right half space and linking with the centre forward. . Having said that, he did put in a shift for England in 2010 WC ( except for that Germany game when for some reason, Capello played him on LW), 2012 Euros and the qualifiers leading upto 2014 WC.

Nothing but admiration for Frank great footballer great coach but overall just a great guy 👏

It's a privilege to see these kind of interviews because, lately i've been making the effort to speak more English, and also I'm studying to become an English translator through British accent. On the other hand, Lampard, apart from being an ex-footballer, played with extraordinary football players at Chelsea such as Terry or even Ballack. As a football manager, he has huge future, so being Chelsea's manager was just the beginning, if he keeps managing football teams, and even the biggest ones, we will likely be talking about England's next manager in the future. So good luck, Frank.
