Ah, CDR Dealey and the USS Harder...two names forever engrained in US submarine history. Just two more reasons why I'm proud to have served on the USS Pennsylvania SSBN 735, and I can call myself a submariner. I can only imagine what it must have been like to serve with these brave men. Once a submariner, always a submariner.

People nowadays just don’t have the physical and mental fortitude people had back then. To be engaged in such brutal combat (especially hand to hand) takes courage and strength at level where there are just no words for it. Thank you guys for your service. It’s because people like you that I get to sit in my house and watch these videos and make statements on my opinions. I know it does not mean much but thank you. Every member of the military no matter what they do is vital and I thank each and every member of our allies forces. We owe you one

I love these tales of heroics. Go Smithsonian!
The sub hit the shoals "6000 yards from shore". That's 3.4 miles. How would the sub be susceptible to small arms fire? Artillery, certainly, but not small arms.

@@jonkoenigs99 I have seen it. The Sharps rifle, even if it was accurate up to 1.5 miles (and in the movie it was more like 1000-1500 yards), at the range out to the sub above, the shot would still be short by almost 2 miles. I stand by what I said.

This and many other sub stories are delightfully told in the series "Silent Service" (here on KZread)
Just read Commander Dealey was the nephew of the Dealey namesake of Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Interesting connection.
Very nice, thanks for the upload!
Indeed was a high risk operation since the sub was threading constantly by no far distance shore artillery of course manage that & everything went as plans because first of the power will & strength of the captain as a leader & secondly of the good luck staying through to the end behind them .

Handsome actors. Manly. Just like all solders
I served on the USS Barracuda sst-3 in 1964 in Key West Fl. next to the Harder. Great video. I wish they would publish some videos on black men in sub duty. I ended my honorable enlistment with 6 patrols serving on the Nathanael Greene SSBN 636, better known as The Nasty Nat.
Must be badasses to perform a night raid like that and come back alive.
wow so badass
These videos are so cool
It doesn't get harder than that.
They were 6,000 yards from shore, that's about 3.5 miles...That's out of rifle or machine gun range. There is more to this rescue than what is told here. Rubber boats making that trip in seas with paddles would take some doing...now if they had kayaks or motor boat maybe possible in one night.

My thoughts exactly, something doesn't add up here...
Bravo 👊
Isn't bottoming-out on a shoal or reef likely to damage the sub & leave them stranded? Or are subs designed with that in mind?
Nossa porque o you tube apenas coloca legendas. Fica o orientação.
what was the commandos mission?
Is this part of a larger episode??
Wish these were longer
Great
Now that’s what u call a rescue mission bois
nads of steel!
Big dig energy if I’ve ever seen it
Good (and important) story, and good graphics, but someone needs to know the story when laying out the presentation. When the operatives finally got into the sub, they'd be 50% dirt and 50% smiles. Also, every second that sub was on the surface, the surface battle stations would all be manned. The big gun, plus a lot of little stuff would all ready if they were spotted to give the sub the time to get back under.
6000 yards offshore?? Nobody is touching you with small arms. Not a chance.
This is the plot of a app store app, like a story pick your way book.
Its brighter here

Because at that time in its history Japan was like the ancient Greek warrior state of Sparta. All ofJapanese society were brought up with an extreme military code of honour, that didn't allow you to surrender. Any enemy soldiers that they captured were thought to be without honour and thus not human and not deserving of any mercy. They were also extremely racist in their views on other Asian countries and had no qualms about killing or abusing civilians.

@@johnemerson1363 One account in "Wounded Tiger " by T. Martin Bennett, talks about this. Wounded Tiger is a nonfiction novel of the true story of the pilot,Mitsuo Fuchida who led the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor whose life was changed by an American prisoner and by a girl he never met. Fuming with a hatred for Americans with a strong sense of national pride, Fuchida allows an intense passion and determination to lead him through the ranks of the Japanese Navy and reaches a position he always believed he would achieve. Jake DeShazer joins the U.S. Army as a bombardier, burning with vengeance after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He becomes a POW for years, battling insanity in solitary confinement until he discovers the secret for change. Dear Mr. Bennett: I have read the complete book manuscript. I like the cover which contains the strong face of the young pilot with a full expression of enthusiasm. He is a tiger. He was born in the year of the tiger. You described my father’s posture and behavior so well and so precisely, I could feel his presence. He remains a national hero in Japan. I have no idea how the world accepts him today. Some will call him a villain, others will call him a proud warrior who found redemption. I will always admire his guts, his intellect, and his sincerity. God bless you and your work. Yours cordially, Miyako Fuchida Overturf (Daughter of Mitsuo Fuchida)
